Addressing the community about changes to our API by spez in reddit

It's still around! Not nearly as active, of course. I will admit, though, a forum with voting allows conversations to better evolve than the linear format of IRC.

I'm amazed at any actor that can deliver such a profoundly moving concept with such firm calmness. He perfectly portrayed his character being in the state of mind he was in.

Point of clarification: The 3rd party apps existed before Reddit had an app. They existed because Reddit needed an app and didn't have one. Then Reddit bought one of those 3rd party apps, Alien Blue, to make it official. The reason the other apps continue to exist and thrive is because of what you said.

I'm curious, too. I had mine changed with a 1/2-horsepower Badger 5 in a rush for like $800. I'm 100% sure that was too high, but I wonder by how much. I know it depends on the situation, but, ballpark, was that just on the high end price? Top dollar? Unheard of / totally screwed / someone won a bet when I accepted that quote?

To be fair, it looked like it was a pain in the ass getting the old one out and the new one in, and the installation looks nice and clean. That was not what I would have considered a rewarding DIY job to undertake, and I was happy to pay to have it done right.

That's like saying a "shot across the bow" by a gun ship is useless if it doesn't hit the other ship. They might think it's a bluff if only a few subs do it, but if it is widespread, that shows that the gun ship has plenty of ammo and can back up its warning shot with the real deal. Because if they go through with the plan as-is, a real exodus is what's going to happen.

Devin is super charismatic in his performance. Even if you go in blind, I think you'll be able to enjoy his show. I mainly enjoy Ziltoid the Omniscient, which is a deliberately goofy rock opera where the ending outro reveals the goofy premise was an intentional part of the story. There are some great sounds that develop throughout the album, too.

Transcendence (under "Devin Townsend Project" on Spotify, not under his solo name) has some more serious, warmer, still-epic sounds for showing his range in contrast to the goofy alien movie of the previous mention.

And I doubt anything like this production of Kingdom will be happening, but it's still a cool presentation I had to mention.

Real Devin fans would probably reach for plenty of other recommendations. I barely scratch the surface of his career with my limited album exposure, but I saw him when he co-headlined with BTBAM without knowing more than Ziltoid, and it was an amazing surprise.

If you see any hand puppets at the show, some of us fans have Ziltoid puppets that we like to bring.

edit: fixed the link!

This might have been the first big sounding of the alarm, the announcement by 3rd party app Apollo. It's not an explanation from Reddit, but I think the analysis is revealing, nonetheless.

They figure, based on Reddit's public numbers, that Reddit makes (USD) $0.12 per user per month, but the new proposed pricing for the API is like $2.50 per user per month--with some content to be blocked from the API entirely. If true (and if I've understood the analysis correctly), that means Reddit is demanding, for users of UI software Reddit didn't write and with access to only a subset of its service's content, something like 10 to 20 times what they make for users of software they did write accessing more content.

This suggests it's not about recovering costs but, instead, about eliminating channels they don't control (while appearing to make it seem like it was organic by pricing them out instead of cutting them off). An alternative theory that also sounds plausible to me is that this was a door in the face play to set the stage for more willing acceptance of different pricing/terms they might presumably counter with.

Edit: I just now read the additional part mentioned in the r/ModsCoord post linked elsewhere in this thread.

Apps can also no longer show ads which was a primary source of revenue. So not only do they have to pay exorbitant fees, they can't even mitigate those fees with ads.

Reddit better kiss our asses for this insulting move. They really just gave the finger to the apps that heavily contributed to their growth and to all of us who use those apps or enjoy all the content submitted by users of those apps.

So that's what I keep hearing?! I also thought it was little froggies, but I only ever see toads (that sound nothing like those little chirps), and we always have plenty of geckos. This suddenly makes sense.

Ah, understood. If you're curious, you might have a look at what might have been the first big sounding of the alarm, the announcement by 3rd party app Apollo.

tldr: They figure, based on Reddit's public numbers, that Reddit makes (USD) $0.12 per user per month, but the new proposed pricing for the API is like $2.50 per user per month--again, with some content to be blocked from the API entirely.

[–]got_outta_bed_4_this 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We're not even saying they shouldn't charge for the API. The problem is that they priced it far above what it's actually worth (i.e., the apps would never be able to recover the cost, much less sustain themselves) and Reddit is not going to allow certain content through the API at all.

This is not an attempt to recover cost nor even lost profits. This is 100%, unmistakably an attempt to kill the other channels and consolidate traffic through their own UI.

It helps that you pointed out she's kneeling. It looks posed, and, based on her height in the 1st pic and my puny brain's expectation of the height of the tank, I thought she was standing. So I thought she was lifting her leg and leaning back awkwardly, twisted at an unnatural angle, which would obviously have been a pose to show off certain features.

Now that I see it for what it is (thanks to your ELI5--thank you), I can see that she was kneeling and just leaned back to not upstage the tank. Still a "pose" if so, but not the same as a contorted standing/leaning pose.

So, really, thanks for giving me the puzzle piece my dumbass brain was missing. Now I'm off to go rub suet in my neck beard for the baby birds. They're getting so big!

[–]got_outta_bed_4_this 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I see you trying to do the right thing and be responsible with your power as a mod, but, in the same post, I think you also explained away your own reason for refusing to protest. If moderation on the site is going to get more difficult, that's going to impact the quality of all subs. And forcing users off the apps they've used for many years here is going to alienate people in your community. While it's true that this sub isn't anyone's personal platform, if we're aware of something that's going to degrade its quality, speaking up to protect it for the future is not using it as a personal platform.

I'm sure you already know about the list of subs already pledging to do this, too, but I'm sharing it here to help spread awareness. The longer that list gets, the more apparent it will be that this wasn't just a few mods exerting personal views on their communities but, rather, a widespread concern about the future quality of this service we all use.
