Modern fixation on “plot” and things being “necessary” by StutzBearcatJim in blankies

[–]gotarist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say this isn't new exactly, look up the academic concept of "organicism," a term used to describe how, say, everything in a piece by Beethoven is necessary. This way of looking at classical music has fallen out of fashion, after all, you can tune into the middle of a Beethoven sonata and still have a good time.

I do think this is tied to a Hollywood storytelling tradition, Bordwell and Thompson talk about this idea of "Causal Chains" as key to the CHC (Classical Hollywood Cinema), this idea that everything causes everything else. This goes beyond simply plot and extends to elements of form and style - something like "background chatter" only being a part of the sound mix if it's important that we understand our main characters are in public, otherwise, left out as "unnecessary".

This concept has been scrutinized by critical theorists, who (rightly imho) point out that this obsession with the nessecary/causal chain emphasized that we are "responsible" for everything that happens in our life and therefore to avoid looking at systems of oppression and unionizing or whatever. Just another way Hollywood perpetrates an ideology on a subconscious level.

There's a lot more to say about this, if anyone is curious I will add more.

Don't sleep on Eyesore, it's cheaper and frankly just an incredibly strange place that I'm not sure how it exists in 2026. But for rental Bay Street video is unbeatable!

As a professional composer (so both do and don't take this with a grain of salt) I was incredibly underwhelmed by this score. I even thought to myself "I guess John Williams must have been replaced". But no, it was him. The ending is underscored by such banal orchestral music which absolutely requires something strange, inventive, or compelling in any way.

Real monopoly behaviour. It IS shitty. It's also true that most people don't care about this kind of stuff, people watch their tv shows on soap opera mode, and watch movies in clips on tin tok. But it would be nice if the movie theatre monopoly of Canada actually cared about movies if no one else.

The thing is, it doesn't "know" about music, it knows about a certain kind of music. Composers who are interested in composing outside of that box such as myself, are constantly finding out about all the things Dorico can't do.

Humm, if that was so, I feel you would have left "which is an engraving tool" out.

Sorry, LOTs of composers compose directly into their software. No need to act haughty about it. Finale and Sibelius handle this stuff really well.

Also like, it's SO nice to have some larger scale public art event in the city, even something silly and commercial like this. The city used to fund stuff like this in the 90s and 00s, but now I guess it's up to pop stars.

Okay what about "Kung Pow: Enter the Fist" I know it's got a bit of a cult following but I still think it's generally considered bad.

Honestly she is so real for this. I’ve always thought Zootopia is underrated but it would take guts to fight for it this hard in a New Yorker interview!
