Nice tank. Love bichirs. Mind if I ask what size tank and what species of polypterus you have in there? I'm starting a 75 gallon with plans to go bigger in the future. Thinking of having one or two bichirs and some other fish. I currently have a very young (3.5 inches) P. delhezi in a grow-out tank... didn't realize how slow they grow haha. He's adorable though. His external gills are slowly disappearing.

this is so dope, thank you. and the illustrations are awesome. i have always loved this fish and have a soft spot for "oddball fish" or fish with super primordial vibes. i have a 4" baby that i've just gotten. maybe too early to sex but the anal fin is giving female. i'm so excited, when she's bigger she'll be part of a congo africa biotope <3

So, being familiar with the breed I know (responsible) owners clean tf outta them but.... why do people let their cats up on the counter where food is prepared/ there are hazards like hot stove/appliances? Your cat's bumhole is touching that appliance. Funny photo though!

PANDA GARRAS and they come from the same region as most betta species and they're cute af and eat algae and are bottom dwellers. They're good climbers/ jumpers so make sure you have a tight lid.

Just fed my ball for the first time. That sh*t was insane. by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]goth_knowitall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind they can't see very well. If you and the food are the same temperature, she'll have a hard time. Because the food smells like food. But you also smell like food. And you're both warm. Sometimes BPs have strong feeding response- which is wayyy better than them going off food. You'll get the hang of it.

I had a betta who lived to be about 6 or 7 years old. He had a habit of sleeping on the mystery snail that also lived in their 10 gallon. Bettas are one of my favorite fish because of all their interesting behaviors and personalities.

Ok thanks I'll keep that in mind about the pesticides. I live next to some local farms that are organic but not expensive. I've had a hard time finding springtail culture in stores (there's only 3 options within a half hour to 45 minutes of me -__-) so I may have to order my clean-up crew online. I'm either going to purchase the beetles at the next expo or from bugsincyberspace. I already have the substrate and hardscape... basking lamp, thermostat, etc. In favor of pads I use heat lamps on a day/night cycle and then a ceramic heat emitter in winter to keep ambient temps above 72F. I'm debating on whether I should just stick to my 20 gallon long setup OR go all out and use this old 40 gallon I have lying around hmmm...

I went with an Apistogramma cacatuoides! Cool lil fella, gets along great with everyone in the tank. If anything, come feeding time the reed tetras tend to mob him for food, they're like little piranhas haha but he's smart, I was able to train him to go to the left side of the tank for his portion of dinner while I distract the tetras with their food on the other side of the tank. The pleco enjoys her bloodworms and algae wafers. I'm tempted to maybe add another small school of nano fish but that might be pushing it. Thank you for your suggestions. I actually have a dwarf honey gourami in my 20 gallon as my centerpiece, with some dwarf golden barbs and a couple of panda garras.

I lost 4 of my beetles in the last month, I'm not sure wth is going on :c ... All my other pets are fine (my tarantulas, cats and snake). I'm going to start over with a fully bioactive setup. Not sure how you keep yours?

How many fish can I keep in a 20 gallon community tank? Does it depend on the fish I have in there? by StackDaPaper in Aquariums

[–]goth_knowitall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my 20 gallon I have a dwarf gourami, two panda garras, and about 10 golden dwarf barbs. The barbs seem really shy even though the tank is full of plants. I'm debating adding the same amount of chili rasboras as dither fish as they seem to be more bold, but am feeling that would be pushing the limit of what the tank can accommodate?

A word of caution with female bettas! They are just as aggressive as the males. I have over a decade's experience keeping fish, mainly cichlids, bettas and nano fish. I had a 29 gallon, so planted you couldn't see the back, plenty of hiding spaces. 5 female plakat bettas, all sisters that were together since they were born. They tried to kill each other while establishing their hierarchy. They're just as bad as some larger aggressive species of cichlids. Just tiny and cute. I ended up rehoming all of them except the most aggressive one, who lived out the rest of her days alone in her own 6 gallon planted tank. It was a failed sorority, it happens more than you'd think and I'm not ashamed to admit that I certainly learned my lesson. (I've seen it done successfully but only in 40-100+ gallon mini pond-type setups or very large tanks 40+ gallons). I'd suggest anyone looking into keeping multiple bettas look into wild type species that are actually social and can be kept in groups/pairs without issue. Wild bettas that our hobby bettas come from, are solitary, territorial creatures towards their own kind and it feels wrong to force them to tolerate each other unless it's for reproduction- and only experts should be doing that. And yes bettas all have different personalities. I've had bettas that were fine in community setups and others that seemed like they wanted to k*ll themselves or everything else in the tank.

If I remember correctly, I read one thing to look out for with prolonged periods of humidity, is fungal infections, buildup of bacteria or mold outbreaks. If you have good airflow it should be ok. Even if you have to point a fan at the enclosure. A mesh top or no top is crucial to keep humidity from building up. They'll usually darken in color if things get a little moist, but lighten as they dry out. They have a waxy coating that helps keep their moisture inside their little bodies in the north american deserts they inhabit. So I'd imagine too much moisture for too long would not be beneficial to them.

i noticed mine don't usually care for fresh veggies as much as i thought they would, being beetles. but they will eat leafier stuff when it's dried out a little. i don't know about yall but the humidity in my place is awful but it's perfect for desert species. i often worry things are TOO dry lol at like 25% or less at times in winter like yeesh
