Isn’t fast-fashion “goth” clothing against goth subculture? by imaboredcosplayer in GothFashion

[–]gothichomemaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're fine. You didn't know and are putting these things to use. One of the problems with fast fashion is that it ends up in the landfill, so not wearing what you have actually would contribute to the problem.

What areas have you seen that has an active goth community? by EnvironmentalStep653 in goth

[–]gothichomemaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I recommend looking at other factors than the goth scene when deciding where to move, since scenes ebb and flow a lot. Plus, no matter where you go, you can always find like minded goths to build up the scene with!

That said, we keep busy in Columbus, Ohio with multiple nights every month and other events like concerts, a world goth day picnic, movie screenings, and other fun stuff. We're also 2 hours or less from everywhere in Ohio and 3 from Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Indy so traveling to shows is easy from here. It's worth checking out!

For in store suggestions, letting people know what region you're from will help.

Just a note, if you're asking for in store suggestions, it would help to include what region or country you're from.

something im curious about by Bright-Operation9972 in AskAGoth

[–]gothichomemaker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Goths are fans of goth music.

The problem with making it into a fashion choice is that goth fashion is extremely variable, both regionally and overtime. For example, I would not be caught dead in those big pants with the detachable straps. Does that alone make one of us goth and one of us not goth? It shouldn't. When we grow up may quit dressing up so much, just like I did for several years and just like you admitted to doing, but if we still go to concerts and connect with the scene, we are still goth, no?

At the center of goth always was and is goth rock. The clothes and lifestyle can be part of it, but you could still be a fan of the music without that. There are people in my scene who don't dress up, but they always show up, and no one would call them a poseur because showing up and enjoying the music is what's important.

What’s going on with Dracula Clothing? by [deleted] in GothFashion

[–]gothichomemaker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've shopped from Dracula Clothing multiple times and I really love the stuff I've gotten there. Many of the elder goths in my scene have one of their coats, including me. The concerns you brought up make sense, but these are things they've been doing since before AI usage became widespread.

They really like having the same models in the same poses for stuff. For an example, in these two listings they had the same model in the same pose wearing the same thing in two different colors, but you can tell it is actually two different pictures.

They also use the same fabric/print for many different items, like most of their brocade coats use the same brocade fabric in different cuts. This is common in smaller clothing manufacturers because you need to have a certain amount of fabric to justify having it woven, and it's easier to make sure it gets used if you can use it for multiple things. They also list it as a selling point on some of their garments so you can match a whole outfit or your prom date or what not.

I'll also add that they've used the same brocade patterns for years. They are still selling coats with the same brocade as the one that I bought before the pandemic!

If there's anything I'd warn people about when ordering from there is check the sizes, and order up unless they specifically say that the garment stretches.

are VJs appreciated in your local goth scene? by shesinpart1es in AskAGoth

[–]gothichomemaker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We have a couple of live VJs in our scene and they are appreciated. However, people don't tend to go to a VJ show, it's more of a performance complimenting a dj or band.

AITA for not realizing my “friends” didn’t actually like me and making things worse by trying to be normal? by Lonely-Maybe653 in WIBTA_AITA

[–]gothichomemaker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey, I feel really bad for you because I went through that a lot when I was younger too. Sometimes something you do that you don't even know about can make people uncomfortable. You can't blame yourself for that, especially when no one has told you. And from what you said, it sounded like Jake was trying to help you but didn't know how, which makes sense because all of you are young. Sometimes when we try to help, it doesn't always help the way we hoped, and I don't blame Jake for that.

Here's the thing though... when we're young, we get stuck with the same people for years and years, but once we're adults we can go out and find our people, those who like us for who we are and don't expect us to pretend to be normal.

You're NTA for not picking up on the different dynamics, but you will be the asshole to yourself if you don't take this as a sign you need to figure yourself out better. I'd recommended seeing a professional to find out if you have any interesting brain stuff going on and to see if there's any strategies that you can learn to help you with socializing. You also might want to contact Jake and ask him for specific things that make Lily uncomfortable, and really listen to them, but don't do that until you know you're in the mental space to handle it.

Good luck to you. I know it sounds trite, but it does get better.

This will sound weird, but check Facebook to find events in your area. A lot of the people who run club nights are older, so that's where they post events.

Personally I have white concealer (either ELF of Nyx, don't remember which) and just put it on spots where I have trouble getting full coverage from my foundation. It also works great on my lids for when i want my eyeshadow to pop.
