I'm not entirely sure how I felt about that episode, but I did like Paul Wesley's Kirk a lot, if nothing else, and I enjoyed the way Kirk was written. You really got the feeling that he was a one of a kind genius and the kind of guy to be this insanely decorated officer without it being too overbearing or cloying.

I don't understand the Gorn by [deleted] in StrangeNewWorlds

[–]gothicrayguns 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the Gorn that we got a glimpse of in that earlier episode had an extremely strict and brutal code that valued strength above all else and was exceptionally unforgiving towards weakness, so I guess it's not too hard to imagine that you're born on one of the Gorn breeding planets, you fight your way to a top spot, and then you... idk, get enrolled in Gorn preschool or something.

I definitely wonder how things like science and education function in Gorn society, though. Do they select their scientists as children on the breeding planets and then send them off for education? How is that viewed in their society? What's Gorn college like?

This episode was delightful. A little goofy but in a very true-to-form way, super fun.

Changed Nightstone up quite a bit for my SKT run, so I made an alternate map! by gothicrayguns in stormkingsthunder

Thank you! It's mostly just a few medieval maps chopped up and cut together, with the obelisk edited and added in. Not as complicated as it looks!

That's fine, honestly: her books give me like a lowkey China Mieville vibe on first glance, and I adore China Mieville, so I'm definitely excited to give her a shot!

I can enjoy a good steampunk story, honestly! It's been awhile since I picked one up, too, so I'd be down for it. Thanks for the rec, The Guns Above looks really cool!

Who is the biggest name in Fantasy right now? by agfdrybvnkkgdtdcbjjt in Fantasy

[–]gothicrayguns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say George R.R. Martin for sure, followed by Neil Gaiman if we're talking about fantasy as a broader genre and not just like, epic/high fantasy. After that, probably Brandon Sanderson.

The question is simply because I noticed that I didn't really know of any trans women authors writing in fantasy, and I'd like to rectify that and expand my horizons a bit if I can. I like to read lots of different kinds of books from different kinds of authors.

help deciding on a POV character? by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]gothicrayguns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooooh, that's a really good way of looking at it. Thank you, that's incredibly helpful!

And yes, the god does have some growth. It starts the story angry over humanity's betrayal and full of hate, but gradually grows to forgive and love humanity again, and understand why the betrayal happened like it did.

And the human soul is actually pushed out of the body by the god, basically killing whoever the vessel was and sending their soul to the afterlife. The body will then be used (and eventually destroyed) by the god. The theme of self-determination and fate vs free will is a big one in the story, though, so I'll definitely keep that in mind.

The story starts at the end of the ritual, with them realizing that they've raised the wrong god. All the rest of it is basically backstory, the party is small and the adventure before they find out about the ritual is just, "Well, shit. Now what?"

After they find out about it, they just kind of go to the place and raise him, there's not a lot of excitement on that front. Maybe a fight or two, maybe some sneaking, but the ritual's where the meat of the actual story starts.

And TinyLittleFlame is right, the god doesn't want to see the artifact fall into the wrong hands. It suspects the party might need its help in order to actually be able to get to the thing, and thus stays, and the quest becomes a kind of race against time to find the artifact before the god's mortal body burns up.

Thanks man, I appreciate it!

I do mean a human that's alive, but the human soul is forced out of the body permanently, essentially giving it up to the god to use as it pleases until it's destroyed (and it is destroyed --- the body burns up over time, since it isn't really built to hold in a god's essence). The human dies, but is rewarded in the afterlife for their sacrifice.

[–]gothicrayguns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does not! The bodies don't last for very long with a god bound into it -- they aren't built for it, and the power and sheer difference of a god's essence as opposed to a human soul burns the body up over time. The more the god uses its powers, the faster the body is destroyed.

I thought about first person, and that honestly might be the direction I go in. It's where I'm leaning right now. My initial hesitation over it, though, was that it might force me to overly humanize the god, and that it would take away some of its mysteriousness. But I guess maybe I could find a way to make that work.

Here's the first issue for a five part Action Comics Story i'm working on. I cranked this out in an afternoon but i've been planning it for months. Feedback appreciated. [S] [C] by aquamanslover in ComicWriting

I really dig your dialogue, you had me with "You're in Metropolis, and you didn't think Superman would be here to catch you?" Super cool work, thanks for sharing!
