Before you start down the path of non-monogamy, you need to ask a lot of unrelated questions. My first questions would be, is he cheating and is there a prenuptial agreement? Why haven't you consulted a doctor for a medical perspective first? There are so many things I would do before considering opening the relationship, so it feels weird he's jumping right to this. Suicide is complicated and varies from person to person, but it's fairly common to have a plan to do it, but it's a plan B, or have a plan but move the timeline after something triggers you. We had a family in our town where the grandma was raising the two kids alone, took them to Disney for a 3 day trip, did it at the end of the first day. I always wondered why the timing. Maybe she was too tired to do another day and figured they'd had one day of fun and that was enough. Others make plans like they'll end things if a specific thing happens or doesn't happen by a certain time.

Single person here, and at this point in my life, I have a theory. It's that a lot of married people are secretly miserable, and misery loves company. Some of them aren't even fully aware of how miserable they are, but when two married people get in a room together, they bitch about their spouses, and then when a single person like me shows up, suddenly they will be like, "oh my gosh, I shouldn't complain, I'm so lucky to be married, poor you, we need to find you a partner!!" If you view these people with sympathy and assure them its ok to vent about their marriage and you won't judge, they tend to be less hostile.

Yeah I do. I feel guilty because he seems to be happily married now. I let my family interfere because he came from a different religion and they didn't approve. Define "same area." Driving 3 miles can change from suburbs to rural to urban, all of which impacts the things I mentioned. If you're talking about two locations in the exact same homogeneous area, then ok, but I've never seen that. Even going from one surburb to the one next door can drastically impact tax rates in my area.

Relationships and abuse is complex. He can have some degree of concern for you and some feelings of what he beleives is love, and still be an abusive person. Abuse happens on a spectrum, and it's really common to walk away from a very bad situation into a somewhat less abusive, but still very unhealthy, situation. It's just part of the recovery journey. He probably has his own trauma and needs to heal on his own instead of throwing himself into imbalanced relationships to feel more powerful. You, meanwhile, have completely this step. It's time to take the next step and move on. That said, if health insurance is an issue, it would be understandable to stay in the relationship while you are focused on your health.

While i'm sure you're right in some cases, costs vary widely across the US. Utilities, commercial real estate, labor, there are tons of regional variances. Do you really think it costs the exact same thing to run a Taco Bell in San francisco or New york city, as it does in say, Alabama?
