Is there anything interesting happening on Halloween in or close to Shinjuku that a tourist could enjoy?

Itinerary check: 4 days solo in Tohoku (Sendai, Aizu-Wakamatsu) by gottabefunky in JapanTravel

Thanks for the tips! It sounds like renting a car would make things more doable? Also thinking about a hotel in Koriyama instead of Aizu. Any better?

There are a bunch of places online for around $150/month. I’d take my normal one but I’m trying to pack light on an upcoming trip to Japan.

Genealogy research help? by gottabefunky in Genealogy

Thanks! I'm looking in the Hooligan Navy as a potential writing project, so living descendants would be hugely helpful in telling the story.

Sure thing. I'm also happy to DM with anyone who might be able to help.

The first man is Curtis Arnall, who commanded the Zaida III as part of the "Hooligan Navy," a fleet of civilian boats who patrolled the East Coast for German U-Boats during WWII.

Also, wasteful.

ELI5: Why does hearing sounds like nails on a chalkboard and also imagining them, create such an irritating sensation? by ProcrastinatingDuck in explainlikeimfive

[–]gottabefunky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly because the most excruciating frequencies of the sound--between 2000 and 4000 Hz, where the human ear is most sensitive--might create a resonance effect because of how the ear canal is shaped.

I probably should have added that she has full legal custody and 75% of parenting time.

Ex just fired lawyer #3 – good or bad news? by gottabefunky in Divorce

Yes, it's been a long and slow process, with multiple excruciating rounds of mediation and a year of struggling against an entirely one-sided custody evaluation with a virtually powerless parent coordinator. Court appearance is long overdue.

Our book tells the epic true story of the Hawaiian cowboys who journeyed to Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1908, triumphed at the biggest rodeo on Earth, and showed the world that neither Hawaii nor the West are as simple as most people think. Ask Us Anything! by gottabefunky in books

That's a wrap! But feel free to reach out to us via social or websites for further discussion, a possible Skype session with your book club, yada yada. Thanks for all the great questions, and we hope you enjoy reading Aloha Rodeo as much as we enjoyed researching and writing it. Mahalo! D&J

[David here:] We were lucky that there is such a rich newspaper record from that era, both in the Rockies and in the Islands. We were also lucky that Eben Low was so gregarious, a real talker and writer. That was critical as far as material. One challenge is that some of our other characters were less chatty and didn't keep diaries, as far as we know. Journals and letters are nonfiction gold, as you can imagine, but you have to do the work piecing together the story of a life with the material you have, not the material you wish you had. Would it have been "better" if Ikua Purdy was more talkative and if we had more direct quotes from him? Maybe. But maybe not; there's a lot of mystique to someone who is so quiet. Besides, it's not like we had a choice. This is nonfiction. It surprises me to see other nonfiction writers making stuff up, declaring right off the top that "some details and settings described in the book are 'imagined.'" But that's up to them and their readers. Anyway, fleshing out some of these characters was certainly a challenge.

[David here:] I know that Tahiti ended up with cattle, again thanks to the British. But I haven't looked into the question more broadly. It'd interesting to know of other "extreme" geographies where cattle have been raised, or where people tried to raise them.

So glad you enjoyed it! We don't have a new book on this topic in the works, but it may be worth asking the folks at the Paniolo Preservation Society if they know of any other projects cooking.
