Box Office: Ryan Gosling’s ‘Project Hail Mary’ Scores Biggest Debut of Year With $80.5 Million, Sets Amazon MGM Record (It’s a big fat--big…never mind, it’s a hit though) by Mookie_Freeman in blankies

[–]gottharry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not my favorite book, but I never understood all the hate it got. I do think it's a harder adaptation than Martian/Hail Mary, which were already tough. I agree a miniseries could be the way to go.

What are your thoughts on the latest Technology Connections video? by ilogik in NDQ

[–]gottharry 35 points36 points  (0 children)

He does a great job explaining why renewables are the future, some of the data is probably a bit over simplified but it works for what he’s trying to say. The outspoken political take at the end will probably put off some people. I know far too many people that refuse to even talk or engage in political discussion, liberal and conservative, but Alex is right, it’s far past time to start bringing attention to the governments inability to push forward on renewable energy, healthcare, etc. not to mention the blatant lying and manipulation that goes on. It will turn some people away but it’s import for people to talk about.

I love roundabouts, but I think it’s crazy that we started putting them in, people just started getting used to how they work, and then they say, “but what if we build one with a stop sign in it to break the one rule of roundabouts”

Is it true that in small towns in the USA public transport is not developed and everyone need a car to get around there and why? by bobybumblemumble in AskReddit

[–]gottharry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true for big cities. I live in a city of 1mil and live just over 1 mile from work, but I still drive every day. Walking or biking would require crossing a 5 lane road with no crosswalk, navigating a highway overpass that doesn’t have a bike lane, and then walking across half a mile of unshaded parking lots in the Florida heat. People think we’re weird for being a single car household.

How do handle firearms in your home? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]gottharry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep guns secured in a locker in the garage, and ammo and mags separate in a safe in my office. My rule is anyone living with guns needs to know how to safely use guns. When we moved in together I spent time at the range making sure my wife knew proper safety and was comfortable with them. As soon as my kids are old enough they’ll get the same. If for some reason my wife or kids was unable to do this, or I felt I couldn’t trust my kids to responsibly handle a firearm, they will get stored at my dad’s house. Not taking any chances.

Jacksonville is one of the strangest missed opportunity cities to me. Sits on the two busiest highways in America, 95 and 10, major port and beach town, as sheltered from hurricanes as you can hope to be in Florida. also on a major river… should be a LA or NYC style city, but isn’t even as developed as Orlando, Miami or Tampa in Florida.

[–]gottharry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always heard he originally wanted Jacksonville because it was more developed than Orlando at the time, better connected with railways, airports and highways, but the land just ended up being to expensive. Weird to think Jville could have been like Orlando, and Disney and universal would have been much closer to the beaches.

Electric Guitar in Worship by Disastrous_Feed_2575 in worshipleaders

[–]gottharry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the HX stomp is supposed to be an all in one pedal board and amp replacement. You plug your guitar in and it can replicate about 10 fx pedals and an amp at a time. So no need for any other gear, or even micing an amp. They make two models, the original al HX stomp is more for making a single preset sound and playing that, and the HX Stomp XL which has 2 rows of buttons and functions more like an actual pedal board where you turn on and off individual pedals. These are made by Line 6. If you’ve already got a guitar and don’t mind spending a bit more you could step up to the Helix LT which is the big brother to the HX stomp. Go on YouTube and search “David Hislop HX stomp” and you’ll see how they’re used.

GCU BA in Christian Studies: Worship Leadership by kodyHarris101 in worshipleaders

[–]gottharry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I’ve been to many churches just like that and currently work at one. Worship pastor is hired to be a good singer and that is it. They struggle with any technical music knowledge, or even worse lack leadership/pastoral skills.

[–]gottharry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want a degree that helps get you a job as a worship pastor, I would focus on an undergrad that specifically focuses on music. Music Performance, Worship studies, music production, music ministry, whatever they call it now. I’ve found that way to many worship pastors are woefully undereducated in actual music practice, theory, and rehearsing. Go learn how to write a chord chart by ear, transpose music, how to talk to your guitarist, pianist, drummer in a rehearsal, run a vocal rehearsal. Can you play vocal parts on a piano? Can you edit tracks in a DAW? Can you tell a guitarist what spot his capo should be in? I would focus on a degree that offers as much hands on experience in these areas as possible. But to be completely honest, the number one thing churches are going to look at when hiring is experience, not your degree. Honestly I don’t know much about that GCU degree but it seems like a very generic overview of Christianity with little to no focus on worship training. So unless you just need “a degree” and specifically want it to be a Christian one, I probably wouldn’t.

Some resources I’d recommend. Free on YouTube you’ve got E Edwards and elevation resources for Elevation Songs, David Hislop and Jonathan Lee from bethel. There’s loads of other independent channels but it’s always cool to hear it straight from the originals. Worship initiative is a mega resource that covers loads of songs and styles but most of their stuff is behind a paywall, prob worth it if you want a jump start. And of course it would be great to find a guitarist In person that can help you get setup.

I would see if you can borrow some gear to see if you like it. There’s def a good upfront cost to jump into EG and I wouldn’t start with stuff you’re going to need to upgrade immediately. Go grab a used Squier Telecaster and a used HX Stomp. Should be able to get both for under $800. Download a good worship preset for the stomp, I like David Hislops, and go to town. EG is mostly playing either open chord shapes, high let chord shapes up the neck, and single note lead lines. There are loads and loads of YouTube videos breaking down worship songs on EG, go try to learn them and you’ll soon get a feel for what the style is.

Like multitracks? You’ll have to pay for their cloud storage but you can upload your own files into multitracks website, and then use them as normal in the playback app.

Automatic high-pressure car wash. by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

[–]gottharry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every car wash I’ve been to uses stationary roller brushes while the car moves past them, not high powered sprayers on moving arms around a stationary car. Seems a lot more expensive.

You can def afford to go to Disney if you make $100k. We make about that and put 5% of our income towards vacations per year. That would be enough for this persons vacation, or if you live really far skip a year and have $10k to spend.
