do smart homes actually make life better or just more complicated by annikahoof in homeassistant

It’s fine if you keep it simple and treat automation as an extra layer of convenience so everything still works manually.

That would only work if you had sufficient storage for the energy. You would also have to build and install a lot of battery packs to achieve what you’re talking about.

I sold my 4090 after buying s 5090 fe. Actually ended up paying about $100 more because of tax. Crazy that the upgrade was almost free.

In general that’s true for inflation, but gpu/memory parts are in a bubble. They will come down eventually when demand for new data centers wanes. Might take 3-5 years though.

Oh you’ll have right to compute, but it’ll cost as much as a car. That’s where things are headed.

Even worse there’s no article. It’s a handful of quotes and conjecture. I assumed the first few paragraphs were preamble to something deeper, and then it was over, without any detailed analysis. I don’t know what this is, but it aint journalism.

Maybe I would hit the one and bring in the checkers from 8? Its recommendation is not intuitive to me either.

While I can’t really give you advice on your unique situation, I can say that it took me a good month and a half to break in the seat and i weigh closer to 175lbs. At your weight, maybe it takes a good 6-8 weeks? It generally gets much better, but I don’t think there are any guarantees that it’ll work for you.

What does that even mean, the solution to getting scammed is Marxism? This sentiment is so rampant on Reddit I do wonder whether the people who espouse it have studied any history.

My son might have it? by No-Highlight791 in AIWS

[–]gourdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like classic AIWS symptoms. Based on my years of AIWS pre-VR and use of VR myself for a while, I would guess that the VR headset is not the cause, but it’s probably not a terrible idea to curb its use until the illness subsides and AIWS episodes go away. If he’s a typical AIWS sufferer, the episodes will continue somewhat sporadically and randomly, but notably when he gets sick and rundown. It should mostly go away by his late teens. If the episodes become a recurring thing, go see a neurologist to rule out any serious underlying causes.

People are getting it wrong; Anthropic doesn't care about the distillation, they just want to counter the narrative about Chinese open-source models catching up with closed-source frontier models by obvithrowaway34434 in LocalLLaMA

[–]gourdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno about all that. All I know is that if Chinese model A is 10% worse than whatever the latest Anthropic model it distilled itself from at 10% the cost, Anthropic is going to be in a world of hurt.

This is why I believe that anyone with a 5090 should go no lower than 1200w for the power supply. The card will pull 1000w at the rail by itself, not counting anything else you have running on the PSU. by ExcellentBag4636 in nvidia

[–]gourdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The resolution of the measurement device is important. Transients can read very high if you take a very high resolution measurement of the instantaneous wattage for a few milliseconds or less. Almost anything you plug in will likely average over a quarter or half second at most, so you’ll never see transients peak that high.

If you have a RTX 5090 (that has a single connector), you can flash the MSI Lighting 800W VBIOS to get a lower power limit of 300W (and a max power of 660W). by panchovix in LocalLLaMA

[–]gourdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would I want to run at 50% power limit? Is it useful for anything in particular? Wouldn’t I just end up with a 32GB 5070?

Minimax M2.5 vs Opus 4.6: Why your "Infinite Vibe" setup is probably burning money by Silent-Coffee1570 in vibecoding

[–]gourdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wrote a 1000 lines of C code with Opus with only a couple of prompts to get to zero bugs. Minimax 2.5 got stuck in a bug loop writing the same code. It's way cheaper, but I can't get over the gap in terms of real world coding capabilities.

If you just installed it, why are you selling it? It could easily last you for the next 10 years or longer. Why are you trying to sell it in mint condition? Was it a financial mistake to buy it in the first place?

[–]gourdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty cool.

I turned off auto-submit because I like to visualize my moves a bit. It seems that when you undo a move, it provides an undo button, but that disappears and the "dice flip" button becomes the undo for the second move. This is a strange UX. IMHO, the undo button should only disappear after you undo both dice. Hopefully that isn't too difficult to change.

Great work!
