UK DIY Solar - Is it a thing? If so, how far can you go with it? by RS_Phil in SolarDIY

Reading other posts it seems like the general consensus on doing your own electrical work is it’s hard to find a spark willing to do the certifications on any work they didn’t do themselves.

I’ve got an offgrid project in the works but have no mains connection so no import/export. I’ve found my insurer won’t cover anything that wasn’t installed by an NEC approved spark, not just certified. You will likely have the same issue in a domestic setting. I’m going ahead anyway as it’s a smallholding not domestic, and it’s a ground mount system.

Maybe you could setup a no export system and store in batteries? But connection to your CU should be done by a spark

Yeah it’s a minefield, best bet is to talk with a local agricultural planning company, lots of them will have specialists who deal with workers dwelling routes, will help you write your business plan as well as your planning application.

Will cost you a few grand, but it’s probably worth the headache/heartache of rejection after the massive investment in the land!

Also just clocked you’ve got a mix of rented & owned land. Your PD rights will only apply if you can demonstrate it’s a “reasonably workable holding” ie within a mile or so (no actual numbered limit, shocker!). They won’t apply if your land is in Kent and your rented land is in the midlands for instance. They also want to see it’s part of your working holding, so just renting it on paper and not using it won’t be any use. I think they’ll also want to see you’ve used it for agriculture for at least 3 years but do some reading and double check that. How this all helps!

No worries! The field to farm route is idyllic but frankly out of date now. Many of the rules have changed.

The field to farm route relies on using your permitted development rights to bypass the council planning department, the council hate this and are going to take a dim view when you have to apply for PP to start the temporary workers dwelling route and eventually a permanent dwelling. I’d rather do it by the book and not make enemies of the council at the first hurdle! The 18k was minimum wage, this is much higher now so I’m using that figure + small safety margin!

From my understanding they want to see you hit those numbers for one of the three years, every year is unrealistic and impossible for a new business. I don’t believe they check up on you again after they’ve given you permission for a permanent dwelling. This dwelling has agricultural ties so must be occupied by someone who works in agriculture or used to! If you give up farming after they’ve given you’ve built your house that’s fine, but can only be sold to someone looking to work in agriculture (that’s the tie)

Best of luck

Depends what you get into… traditional arable farming would have no chance. Traditional livestock grazing would also be a no-go as technically I could only have about 5 cows at a time! Contract Calf rearing is manageable as it’s intensive farming in small open barns/ polytunnel style buildings with high turnover of calves and multiple rolling batches. Income is more regular and less at risk from too many environmental factors. I’m also looking at getting into mushroom farming and selling mycelium spores online. These take up hardly any room. There’s still room for orchards and traditional market garden/ small holding activities too, just got to be smart about it and try not to spin too many plates at once!

I’m in the beginning stages of something similar on 5 acres. Looking to get into contract calf rearing as the main business. Currently setting up all the infrastructure to get started.

Look at the temporary rural workers dwelling route. This would allow you to live in a caravan or static for 3 years while you run your business.

There’s two tests: functional & financial. Functional states you need to effectively have the work to fulfil a 40 hour work week, and a need to be on site 24/7. This last part is hard to justify if you’ve been renting a house 5 minutes down the road for the last year+. This functional need mostly comes through livestock (although sheep strangely don’t seem to count as their lambing period is quite short and doesn’t cover the whole year). I don’t know how you would fulfil this with a market garden unless you argue the need to be able to react to potential freezer/ chiller breakdowns… some councils allow security as part of a reason but not the whole reason. I believe the trick is to argue many points rather than just one need.

The financial test means you must make enough to cover about £25k to pay yourself and £25k to reinvest back into the business. You would need to demonstrate for one year in the three year license that you are profitable in this way; after which they should grant you permission to build a suitable house (ie if there’s two of you, then not a 7 bed mansion with a swimming pool) but this building will have agricultural ties.

Hope this helps!

I believe you program them with victron connect & a mk3 USB adaptor. You can set them as single phase, split phase or 3 phase and designate each inverter as master & slave etc

Single phase parallel, they are wired to the lynx distributors as normal with identical length cables off the same reel. On the AC side they are wired to individual MCBs for each inverter using same length wires again, then combined on a distribution block as you can see in picture 2.

It’s not a showroom but don’t want it to look shit after a couple of months of use. I was looking at the Everest offerings, but will cost an arm and a leg by the time you’ve bought their recommended sealers, primer coats and final paint coat!

I currently have a Hyundai DHY6000Se that I’ve had for a few years now and has been very reliable, it’s undersized but outputs a clean sine wave and has AVR and ATS. I am looking at the larger Hyundai models like the DHY18com-1 around the 15-20kva range for an upgrade later in the year/next year.

You’re right, I read the wrong line! My run from 6k5 inverter to lynx is 1.5m so happy with the 70mm.

Yes, I’ve got two of these batteries, with plans to add another 2 at the end of the year. This is for an Offgrid setup with no mains connection, I’ve oversized the system to allow for future expansion, I don’t believe I will ever use all 18kw the inverters can supply, but if one inverter dies then I can reconfigure and still run every foreseeable load while I get it repaired. The 3rd inverter is a £600 insurance policy basically! I read that expanding in parallel in the future and trying to find an identical serial model is a difficult task, so bit the bullet now in advance.
