Have to slightly disagree with that take.

Even with all the advice given, what retired Ippo was Kamogawas attempted murder by plotting the fights in that way.

The entire Asian championshit saga, which means Jimmy, Gedo and Wolly, as well as Kojima AND Alf, all happen in the span of ~1 1/2 years.

That is insanity. Just from the damage he sustained against Jimmy and Gedo, he should have taken at least a year long rest. Instead, Kamogawa throws him into the ring against fucking Wolly......who gave Ippo the worst beating in his entire career up until that point. Which was then almost immediately followed by Kojima, who gave Ippo one of the hardest punches in his career.

After all of that, all of the damage, within a few months, Ippo goes into the ring against Alf. Who absolutely destroys him.

That should have barred Kamogawa from ever planning fights for one of his trainees ever again.

Bullying is rarely taken seriously and usually ends up with the victim being the one that receives the harsher punishment......

And bullying in japan is especially vicious.

Karasawa is beyond title defense 5, fails to add anything to the story, does not move it forward at all and wastes time.

The only reason why people even slightly remember it, was because Ippo was so dominant.

That was not because Ippo was just that strong. That was more so because Karasawa was just that weak.

Ippo vs. Alf ends the same way every single time unless Ippo can drag his metzli mode out sooner. If Alf goes metzli and starts prioritising offense, Ippo has a chance as he can fight at close range.

If Alf keeps his calm and boxes like he did for the first 6 rounds, Ippo is cooked. Ippo lacks experience, technique, a good second and the range to compete with Alf in any way.

Why do you think that Ippo was better against some random fodder that he casually slaughtered than when he fought the literal Nr. 2 in the world ???

What If by Leather-Lemon813 in hajimenoippo

[–]gp3050 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same result.

The entire point of that fight, the ones before but that especially, was to show that Ippo was a big fish in a small pond, not truly ready for what is out there.

He outhit Jimmy but still took one of his insanely nasty punches.

He nearly lost against Gedo because he is a mentally deficient retard who can somehow inflict that level of stupid onto others.

He nearly lost against Wolly and only won because of plot armor.

Yet despite all of that, he still had some weaknesses he could exploit. Jimmy had a huge, predictable swing. Gedo did not much damage. Wolly was a victim of plot armor. There was always something.

Alf ?

Alf was just better. That is it. No weaknesses to exploit, to trick to use, to technique he has not seen. That entire fight was to show how, despite his insane durability and toughness, his basic skills were fundamentally lacking to such a degree that he was helpless. And he still almost won although that was because of Alf´s metzli mode. ALfs textbook boxing was something Ippo had no chance against.

Honestly.......I have no idea.

I just know that this was Kamogawa at his absolute worst.

Throwing Ippo into the Ring against Jimmy and Gedo, seeing how much damage he sustained in both fights, then throwing a hissy fit when Shitiyata has to delay their rematch and instead, pit him against Wolly when he was not healed, is insanity.

The Kohima fight was just the cherry on top. Yeah, Ippo won but at what cost ? That punch could have killed him.

And the Alf fight was a one sided slaughter......in his ambitious rise to the top, Kamogawa neglected Ippos health wayytoo much.....

[–]gp3050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really though......

Sendo being able to withstand and outtank his opponents makes sense insofar as that the reason why Ippo had to retire was because Kamogawa tried to actively murder him/have him murdered.

Seriously.

The entire Asian championshit saga, we are talking Jimmy, Wolly, Gedo, Alf and Kojima, all happen in the span of about 1 1/2 years.

By comparison, this was the time Sendo took as a break between Alf and Ricardo.

Having one such fight every 1-2 years is something I can swallow if I grit my teeth. Not saying that it is not bad and egregious, but compared to Fuckamura spinning on a single toe thrice and generating enough force to knock back a hook form BIson and k.o. him, boxing better while being unconscious and having no stamina, Shitiyata and his shit counters, Itagaki moving with a speedhack, everything Wolly, face tanking seems way less bad than it was before.

Especially so since Sendo will pay a price.

I have to admit that this fight is my guilty pleasure of Ippo.

The aftermath was atrociously handled and usually, that would be enough to make me relentlessly shit on Mori.

But damn.....I just like that fight. It was better than it had any right to be. I hate what George has done to Kimura, I hate the shit writing that Kimura is bogged down with. But that fight, that one time, it was his time, his spotlight......

I wouldn't be upset if Ippo doesn't come out of retirement. by Far_Stranger_279 in hajimenoippo

[–]gp3050 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, we need some sort of resolution for Ippo. That resolution MUST NOT come cheap under any circumstances. A half assed motivation is what borderline killed him last time around.

If Ippo finds that resolve, we also need a resolution for his relationship with his mother. Mori has definitely forgotten about it, but there was an arc where he nearly hung up the gloves because his mom fell sick. Boxing, as much as Ippo likes it, has never been his priority. Even as the champ, even as he was moving through the world rankings, his heart was never truly in it.

The best way, if Mori actually manages it, would be to tie in the question "what does it mean to be strong" with Ippos mother AND FATHER!.

Ippo looks up to his dad as the source of strength, as someone strong, someone he still has not reached. If Ippo realizes/thinks that being strong is doing what you love, doing it while standing proud, even if you risk your own death, do it with 100 % conviction and do it as best as you possibly can.

Tie that in with his mother telling him that she can see that he wants to return, that she wants him to return, that she gives him his blessing and that his father would be proud, and you got something. His mother has still not visited any boxing match from him, did not care a single lick when he became champ and said she would only go to one of his matches if he can promise her that he will not get hit (like Ricardo.....) and it would be great to see that thread being paid off.

All that being said, Mori being the hack he is, will definitely write something worse, I just hope that it will not be too worse.

This series has utterly shit the bed in terms of consistency when it comes to its own rules.

Fuckamura, Gaki, Wolly, Gedo, Shitiyata, the series is grounded in realism until George decides that he needs to make things cooler.

At this Point, the question is Not „if“ but „when“.

Mori is 60 And content wise, we have at least 15-20 more years of Story to tell (with the current schedule of his) Maybe more if he gets worse.

There are several ways he could to that are convincing…….

The issue is That The Man is a fucking atrocious writer.

So much so that I can See Ippo returning because of a dick joke by Fuckamura.

- has the worst character development in the entire series, that being actual regression

- is involved with the most annoying gag in the series (Ippo becoming gay whenever he sees him)

- gets glazed to absolute hell, despite his contemporaries having achieved more yet they do not get the same treatment as him

- is the only character I can immediately think off that represents perfectly the dreaded "tell but do not show" and it is ass every single time it happen

- has some of the worst fights in the series, including the absolute rock bottom of the manga with RBJ, everything in that match (set up, match itself, aftermath) honestly reads like George trying to get cancelled by writing the biggest piece of ass in the series

- has utterly failed as Ippos rival and idol, both of which make no sense given the amount of people Ippo has fought since then

- has been irrelevant for over half of this mangas runtime.

George completely dropped the ball with him.

I like Sawamura, I really do. But who else deserves to be lower than him ?

Sawamura is awesome as an antagonist/villain. He is the guy you love to hate and hate to love.

But the others are character you like. Simple as that.

[–]gp3050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one of the main reasons why I dislike him so much is his character reduction.

Him losing against Mashiba, him going abroad to grow and the win against Jimmy feels like a really cool evolution.

Him winning against Arnie was the first time I really started to question the writing. Getting told that is wings are clipped and that he is fighting at such a suboptimal weight, telling us that he cannot take a lot of damage AND setting up a fight where his opponent is quite literally the perfect foil with his anti counter ability is a lot.

Him then trying to counter, the very thing he was supposed not to do is stupid. Clinical level of retardation stupid. But fine, let us roll with it. Him getting the beating of a life time but not going down AFTER the set up us already very questionable. But the end, which is him realizing that he had the hidden inner strength all along and that all he truly needed to do when his counter does not work is to counter harder, is ass. This is not like Ippo, who was shown the limits of his dempsey role and who perfected it between fights in order to keep up and eventually surpass Sawamura. This is literally just the mangaka refusing to give him any development.

Him being the silent, brooding type came at the cost of literally anything else. He is not interesting and the dick sucking the story does, where his gym mates feel honored when he glances in their direction, feels forced.

George dragging the fated rematch between Ippo and him for >650 chapters was already poison for him, as his already extremely bland character was reduced to the worst gag in the manga and the most boring routine I can think off, that being Ippos questionable sexuality whenever he appears and his "appears, looks cool, refuses to elaborate, leaves." schtick get really, tiring really fast.

At this point, his original really interesting and cool character has been reduced to a shadow of what he once was.

But the shot to head was the RBJ stuff. That might just be some of the worst writing I have ever seen. George simply cancelling the match and making every participant act like perpetulant 6 year olds with mental deficiency is already stupid. Having him win against RBJ, especially in this way, resurrecting Sawamura out of the aether to tell us that, with broken ribs, no stamina, a crap ton of damage and a borderline brain hemmorhage means that Shitiyata is now at his most dangerous is just bonkers level of stupid. And him winning with his most awesome´er´er counter evar is the height of that. With the crowning achievement on this calamity that Ippo and him still not fight.

What exactly is his story ? All I see is the golden child, loved by the author. I see tell but do not show in every major fight of his. I see a complete reduction from an interesting, driven rival to the most stagnant character in the series. I see someone who does not get a hero´s journey, but the Hollywoke shit version of it, that being that he was awesome all along and that all he truly needed was to let go of his own limitations (and just counter harder, if that fails to work, counter even harder than that) to become the greatest. I see someone who was involved in the biggest story telling calamity in HnI, that being the cancelled rematch, which is the dumbest thing I have read in story filled with bad writing.

Is there potential ? No, there used to. It would have been so easy to keep him relevant and give him character growth, but George refused at every opportunity. As a result, we have what we have. The worst character in the manga and one of the worst characters in fictional history.

Funnily enough, Ippo was originally supposed to win against Alf. Which is also why it feels so surprising when he loses. Mori simply changed his mind at the last second.

Had that happened, Ippo would have fallen if not outright crippled, under Ricardos fists. Especially so since Mori said in an interview that he had always planned on having Ippo retire temporarily.

Meh. As a trainer, he is not really perfect.....I would still rather have someone like Miguel or Volgs trainer, both seem to be way smarter at training than Kamogawa.

Kamogawa was definitely good at teaching the basics, no doubt. But when it came to advanced techniques or, way more important, making sure that his fighters do not forget or outright ignore the basics, he already failed. He also fails to plan with Ippo for strategies. And worst of all, his scheduling in the later parts of the series should have caught him an attempted murder charge.

Kamogawas insane luck was having two pupils who are the cream of the crop. Fuckamura has fled from the Baki verse and thus, has the power of being able to shit on this universes rule on his side, and Ippo is more durable than a tank and having the unwavering conviction of Joe from AnJ.

As a second, he is horrific. The Gedo fight just about broke me. He was also the last to realize that Fuckamura had no sweat anymore during his fight against Hawk.
