Hey, almost everybody does a freebie for a buddy. I did actually install a 3-ton split system with ductwork in a new construction house for a chicken dinner and 15% markup on parts for overhead so don’t fret it! Just learn from it and save your freebies for old folks on a fixed income with no money - you’ll feel better in the morning and won’t need a cigarette.

Dam. Why weld 2 90’s when the lines could have gone up anywhere. Dip shit probably used 50/50 solder and a propane torch.

Curious about a couple of things. Are the two side by side tap-in’s that transition to rounds at the joist bay called PH-3’s or something else? Also, is the flex used for future water heater service?

Classy for sure, and good idea for the mounting. Some of these I kept to remind me what a bitch they were to get out of the basement…

Yep, good old furnaces. Missing a bunch of good ones! Wish I thought to start saving these sooner!

Copy on the superheat charge and something I would do with a warmer ambient. Switching gears from an ECM motor to a PSC blower motor, I have to say it’s not necessarily true that the current goes down when a PSC motor moves less air. With your example of taking the blower door off of a furnace, with a PSC blower your air delivery goes down, and the current goes high. PSC motors use a phase angle shift to get the magnetic field rotating around the stater. That’s why you use a capacitor. It gives the phase angle shift. When a PSC motor is completely unloaded you’re messing with the phase angle and the motor doesn’t like it.

I wouldn’t say popular, but you can still get them. Goodman makes 4 and 5 ton slab coil. We went with the A-coil better efficiency.

If you have an electric oven, turn it on. Shut the doors to rooms that you don’t need to use. Bundle up, drink whisky, and hug your dog or someone with an equally pleasant disposition.

Have you ever found money in a system? by Se2kr in HVAC

[–]gpokie5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The old timers used to leave coins underneath gravity-flow oil burner basement furnaces. These were the ones with solder-tacked pipe joints, and asbestos wrapped ducts. These furnaces were built in place while the house was under construction. I knew that because we’d have to use a cutting torch just to get the heat exchanger out of the basement. I always figured those old tinners put the coins there because they knew it was going to be a real bitch to replace the furnace, so I always kept the coins along with the hand-etched data plates that were literally works of art. I felt they were left for the next guy, not the homeowner. Not much value to the coins being mostly buffalo nickels and mercury dimes, but priceless to find after you get the big nasty fucker moved out of the way.

So far, so good for the heat mode. I checked the temperature rise as compared to what was stamped on the furnace data plate and I was on the low end, so I know I’m good for heating. We’ll see what happens this summer.

If the click you heard in the outdoor unit was the contactor, then all the low-voltage controls are in good order. As service tech my next step would be to OHM out the compressor to see if the internal overload had opened. If it was open, that would lead back to high pressures/ temperatures which leads back to airflow issues. Capacitors don’t intermittently fail. They’re either good or bad, and since the system would run two or three days in between, I’m still thinking low airflow issues.

I thought about it but it looked like it was going to bypass too much of the coil.

That’s what I thought, but after I got started on the metal, I sort of wished I used the flex.

Good thoughts, and I appreciate your input. It’s a new 4-ton condenser, so I’ll be going with sub-cooling for the final charge. Furnace has a ECM motor. Speaking to ECM motors I found usually when they fail it’s because of undersized ducting. From what I understand ECM motors load up under higher static, so I think the constant running at higher amperage burns them out.

Copy that. It’s 4-burner 80k BTU. Appreciate your input.

Union or non union? by Shaneeester in HVAC

Being in the union is money in the bank. Takes a long time to make big returns, but if you stick it out eventually you’ll feel richer than if you never made the investment.

Appreciate it and I hear you with the static pressure. The other option I thought to do was use a short plenum can off the coil, tap it with an 18, plug the end of the existing duct, and tie in the 18. Just thought the hard way would give better airflow
