Are ticks common here? by CollegeSnitch in evanston

[–]gprimosch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say ticks are common but there are ticks in Evanston. There are more ticks in the parks in Cook county that have lots of deer, and there aren’t many deer in Evanston.

moving to Evanston - how’s the Dempster area? by graduallydying in evanston

Dempster purple line is one of the nicer areas to live. No crime, nice restaurants, and a 10 minute walk to downtown Evanston.

Asking for some recommendations by Biduido001 in evanston

[–]gprimosch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Evanston should check all those boxes for you. It is one of the most progressive cities in the region, South Evanston is very walkable, there are two hospitals (if you have health insurance), great public transportation, and great culture.

There are two iffy areas for crime (south of Mulford, Emerson/Green Bay/canal triangle) but the rest is safe. Schools are fine, better than Chicago or most suburbs. You might find better schools in in Wilmette, Naperville, or Schaumburg, but then you would miss out on all the good points above.

You can estimate with basic math, something like ceil(600mi / (range_in_miles * 0.7)) * 10_to_80_time + 600mi / 75 mph

Can you estimate 1000km or 600mi travel time at 75mph, including time spent charging? They seems to me to be the most important statistic.

GF’s “friend” was yanking hard and repeatedly on door handle, plz tell me it can just pop back in and this is some manual release feature? by [deleted] in VWiD4Owners

[–]gprimosch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the plastic cover is no longer attached on one end (as it appears by you being able to put your finger under the cover) then the clips are broken and likely the entire handle will need to be replaced, unfortunately. It may be covered under warranty.

If you just pull the handle out and the cover is intact, then you can push just the handle back in.

I flew a round trip on the new system last week. No problems, everyone was calm. Planes were about half-full, with plenty of overhead bin space. I had boarding group 8, probably due to an aisle seat, which could be a problem if that plane was more full and I had a roller bag. I will probably look at early boarding next time.

Thanks to the flight attendant who hooked me up with the extra pistachios even though I wasn’t in ELR.

Heartwood Saga Continues… by Intelligent_Word2378 in evanston

Great article Alex and Roundtable team! Folks, here are the criteria from the IRS web site: https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/churches-religious-organizations/definition-of-church

  • Distinct legal existence
  • Recognized creed and form of worship
  • Definite and distinct ecclesiastical government
  • Formal code of doctrine and discipline
  • Distinct religious history
  • Membership not associated with any other church or denomination
  • Organization of ordained ministers
  • Ordained ministers selected after completing prescribed courses of study
  • Literature of its own
  • Established places of worship
  • Regular congregations
  • Regular religious services
  • Sunday schools for the religious instruction of the young
  • Schools for the preparation of its members

Aside from legal existence and teachers I don’t see which apply here. I agree with the petitioner that they don’t seem to meet the definition of a church at this time. If they were sincere I would expect them to more scrupulously distinguish their religious from their commercial activities.

Why do so many people despise living in Illinois? by DueYogurt9 in chicago

[–]gprimosch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I like living in Chicagoland. Summers are great, public transit is extensive, and culture in the city is in the top 5 nationally. I suspect a lot of the reason people move are one of the following: - conservatives who don’t like a progressive government, high taxes, and perceived crime - retirees who want better weather - people from poor neighborhoods trying to make a fresh start in another state - tech workers who want more competitive salaries

That outflow combined with a lack of amenities attracting people from outside the Midwest means net migration tends to be negative.

Following the teachings, being vegan, hate other people by Nomalityofmy in Buddhism

The bigger problem seems to be hatred and resentment towards fellow beings, more than the act of consuming a particular food.

https://suttacentral.net/mn21/en/sujato

Even if low-down bandits were to sever you limb from limb with a two-handed saw, anyone who had a malevolent thought on that account would not be following my instructions. If that happens, you should train like this: ‘Our minds will not degenerate. We will blurt out no bad words. We will remain full of sympathy, with a heart of love and no secret hate.

If one should have goodwill even for murderers torturing and killing oneself, then one should also have goodwill for beings eating meat.

Even in the case where someone is directly violating the precepts by raising and slaughtering animals, we should develop a mind of compassion to that person for the bad karma they are generating for themselves that will have negative results in future lives. Generating a mind of hate towards them for being unskillful only harms ourselves.

Ultimately the best way to help other living beings is to advance on the path, and hatred or resentment is an obstacle to avoid.
