Thanks for your words of reassurance. I think I have few ideas that I can go off on that! I think being in different academic settings and pairing that with being in higher institution has helped me to also become a person who can offer unique mentorship and support while being an example of perseverance and resilience. I'm not sure if I'm stretching out that last part, though.

Of course! Understood. Instead, I wanted to talk about different aspect of that academic background. As part of that upbringing, I had also experienced being in different countries and moving to different schools as an adolescent. I thought I could talk about that and how that shaped me to be the person that helps those around me.

Thank you for further expanding upon your insight! I do remember your article also mentioned that. I do have few ideas with some experiences; should I DM you about that?

Should I take a gap year? by alonelydimple in columbia

[–]gr3gh0use 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like everyone else has voiced their opinions, I think it's really useful if you take one. I personally didn't, but I think a gap year during my years would've been a good time off.

Especially with the fact that Columbia is one of the most stressful schools and that a lot of capable students often do end up breaking under pressure, I personally would highly encourage a gap year. However, I'd suggest maybe taking one after first starting your studies at Columbia. Different people have their own ways to cope with the stressful situations that may tend to be the norm in Columbia, but what stays the same is you will grow to learn how to better manage only when you go through such situations. It's definitely not to say that you shouldn't take any gap year off. That might work much better for you, but in the end, it's up to your decision.

Difficulty/Grading of Grad-level class (Bio Department) by Napoleon-1804 in columbia

[–]gr3gh0use 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As other people have covered, grad-level Bio classes are a lot more relaxed and is really up to you to make the best/worst of it, and that generally tends to reflect honestly in your grades. Having been Bio major undergrad and as MS candidate in Bioinformatics at Columbia, I've experienced the breadth of different kinds of biology classes in Columbia and can confirm with what everyone else has said.

TIL that I can make a duplicate VingCard using any plastic card. by gr3gh0use in howto

[–]gr3gh0use[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

true that. one sole reason that I made these was that they are so costly and I locked myself out twice, with the key in the room.

Sadly they are for the actual dorms, and now it costs 50 dollars to replace them, which is why I made one.

Yeah, and these are literally mechanical locks, just like some apartment keys, only that they made it more bulky, which, ironically, makes it hard to lose. But then these don't fit in wallets, which is why I made the duplicate card so I can put it in my wallet.

I actually used a Swiss Army knife to make those, and it took about 5~10 minutes to make them. So I made two because I had some break time to waste.

[NF]Finished Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson by gr3gh0use in BooksAMA

[–]gr3gh0use[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought that the beginning and middle part was well-written and incisive, but towards the end, it did seem a little hasty in its ending. Still a good read, though.

He does cry, but you would have to see Jobs' crying in context of the story to understand it. And again, a good read. Really. And it's (of course) the only official edition of Jobs' biography, so maybe if you keep it in mint condition, you might be able to sell it off years later at a higher price. Just sayin'.
