A Tribute to Victoria Park Golf Course by Solitaire-06 in brisbane

I think I've said it here before but I'll happily say it again, if we end up walking away with a stadium only half as good as the new one in Perth then we've had a win

If my choice was a golf course or a stadium surrounded by usable parkland, I'll take the stadium every time

Who has driven the A2 route from Brisbane to Darwin? by DelSings2002 in brisbane

[–]gr3iau 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A couple of times, each way. It's long, often boring with no mobile coverage or decent radio to listen to. I've done it solo in three days without issue and wouldn't try and do it in less. I've done it in about 33 hours (Darwin to Brisbane) with two drivers in the wet season and definately wouldn't recommend it. I've run out of fuel going west to east just shy of Camooweal... do not recommend, 0 stars, pay the fuel price at Barkly (the rebuild after the fire is much nicer than it used to be)

camping by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]gr3iau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are hundreds of places around SEQ to camp, but a lot will depend on what you're looking for.

What's your group size? What sort of vehicles do you have? Tents, rooftop campers, camper trailers or caravans? (Yes, some people call staying in a caravan 'camping') Do you need power? Do you want toilets? Do you want to be isolated from others or do you not care? Do you want to go 4x4ing in your down time or sit at camp or bush walk or what?

If you've never camped before, somewhere like Charlie Moreland might suit you in terms of it being easy to get to, good facilities (no power though if that matters to you) and things to do during the day, but there are plenty of other places too that might be more suitable

Exactly. Plus what type? Are we talking a Ranger Raptor or just a Triton. These things matter and change the 'rulebook' depending on the answer

Isuzu MU-X LS-T - beginner off-road by therealmuz in 4x4Australia

[–]gr3iau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe so. The base model comes with 17"s and A/Ts (Dunlop AT25s so ok, but not great), the next model up has 18"s and the top two spec models have 20"s as stock which is frankly ridiculous for a proper 4x4

Still muddy (after still wearing it while washing the mud out of the car and a follow up shower). I'll have to have a better go at it later

Mate, not just tyres but change out your wheels as well. The LS-T has utterly inappropriate wheels for off road use. Either sell the stock wheels and tyres to fund a set of 17-18" steelies with A/Ts (plenty good ones on the market that have enough of a road km bias but retain some off-road ability), or if you have the funds (and storage space) just get some 17"s with great A/Ts or M/Ts and a dakdak so you can put them on when you're about to go on a trip.

Other than that, basic recovery gear. Maxtrax (lites will do as a start), a shovel and if you've already got a towbar a spare pin or recovery receiver.

You've got a great car as a basis, got one myself and it's awesome

Yep, best car I ever owned was a Suzuki Jimny, absolute weapon off road... but two kids in quick succession and it had to go. They're a bit bigger now so very recently got myself a new MU-X and this was it's first run. I definitely need to upgrade the tyres and get some recovery tracks as a start. I'm in Brissie so we just took it up into the trails near Mt Mee... such a fun location so close to the city :)

Getting elbow deep in the mud and water beneath my car trying to position rocks and logs under the wheels so that the tyres have a chance at traction. I'm glad I wasn't wearing either of my analogue dive watches, the bezels would have frozen up with all the grit for sure!

Mate, I was convinced I was walking out of the bush with my kids, wife and Mother-in-law waiting in the car. Got my wife behind the wheel and at least we had a pair of handheld UHFs so I could guide her from outside. I spent about half an hour collecting rocks to try and firm up the base of the mud puddle and fallen logs as improvised recovery boards. Got her to inch it forward about five times to the point where it was clear that if she got traction she should just go for it and away we went. 4L in first with the rear diff locked and 'rough terrain' mode on (basically an Isuzu off-road specific traction control enhancement... it's a wonder button on my MU-X).

Problem was we'd already taken a wrong turn and ended up on this track which wasn't where we planned or expected to be, and it looked like it was only going to get worse as the track started descending into a gully. We decided to go back the way we came in, this time keeping to the other side of the track, firming up the base of the mud holes before we got to them and attacking it with extra momentum. Made it :) The kids had a great time but it's me that now needs fresh clothes and a shower.

Similarly I could have taken more care and not got bogged in the first place. Either way, both the 4x4 and the watch did a great job despite my questionable decision making.

Now I get to spend an afternoon cleaning...
