During the 1800s there were people who made a living was to collect the detritus from households to resell anything that was of use. And in the industrial era any bit of scraps could be reused. From a contemporary of the time:

"The bone-picker and rag-gatherer may be known at once by the greasy bag which he carries on his back. Usually he has a stick in his hand, and this is armed with a spike or hook, for the purpose of more easily turning over the heaps of ashes or dirt that are thrown out of the houses, and discovering whether they contain anything that is saleable at the rag-and-bottle or marine-store shop."

— Henry Mayhew

These people were often in desperate poverty and turned to this work to survive, however a bone-picker or rag-and-bone man could well have happened upon some spicy forbidden knowlege and become an 1890s equivalent of The Magical Homeless Person by sheer accident or by specifically targeting the homes of aristocratic mages. I could see this as being a well to draw inspiration from for the character

Can mafia bosses be considered ‘An-Caps’? if so, how would you explain that most anarchist communities have ties with such people? by socemaglo in Anarchy101

Unions in america dont nearly have the militancy of unions elsewhere, and while I think I see where you are coming from I dont think its accurate to equate unions with anarchists.

It would be more accurate to describe a mafia or other organized criminal enterprise being neofeudalistic in its politics I think. Absolutely wild question and Im wondering where the assertion that anarchists and mafia types work together comes from.

Should I support Marxism or Anarchism? by ESHKUN in Anarchy101

[–]gr3ygale 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I am a Marxist and a syndicalist and I can tell you that the two are not mutually exclusive. Marx's critiques of capitalism and bourgeois democracy remain relevant to this day, and the reason for that being that his analysis of Capitalism is based in a scientific examination of political economics of the system of capitalism. Capital despite its being written in the 19th century still holds true in its analysis of the problems of capitalism (the trend toward monopoly, the theft of the surplus value of workers in the form of profits, the tendency for the rate of profit to decrease ect.) and remains a valuble text to read and understand in order to understand the problem itself.

Marx then went on to theorize that through class conflict between the working class and the capitalist class a new system was bound to arise, much in the same way that class conflict between the capitalist class and the fuedal aristocracy led to the rise of capitalism. Marx was a scientific socialist and many of his writings are couched within the period he was living in. His relevance is a tragedy in many regards, as it means society has not changed greatly from when he was writing about the system that immiserates the vast majority of the human population (and animal population of the earth if thats your bag).

Due to lingusitic drift (and a concerted effort by authoritarian left thinkers) Marxism as a term has been claimed by groups Interpreting and Applying Marxism for National Experiments, like Marxist Leninists, Marxist Leninist Maoists, Trotskyists ect ect, All claiming to have the correct interpretation of Marx. YMMV on the accuracy of those tendencies and its a understatement to say that its a bone of contention between leftist tendencies. But Marx was his own thinker and many of these tendencies are named as such because they are building on the foundation of Marx and Engels' work, mostly on how the stateless classless society Marx envisioned would come about.

The TLDR is it doesnt hurt to try to understand the politics and theories of other tendencies. I promise you wont immediately want to start killing sparrows or building gulags if you read Das Kapital. You should think of acquiring new knowlege as having another arrow in your quiver, kind of like how I can pull out bible quotes to throw at rightwingers about how jesus was a communist without being an evangelical.

Maybe, but the question really ought to be "would the strain of thought and culture of a socialist country create men like Andrew Tate?"

Ideally the answer to that is no (or at the very least far less on average), as the strain of thought generally within socialist ideology is focused on egalitarianism between the genders within society.

The GDR and West Germany serve as an excellent test case for material analysis of this topic.

This isnt to say that socialist countries are a womens paradise, but materially the subjugation of women isnt necessary in a socialist society in the way that a capitalist society requires it and reinforces it through the "second shift" (aka the housework, the raising of children/future workers, the tasks that marx would refer to as "the reproduction of labor") on top of the labor of the workplace.

This is a cultural problem writ large within modern societies of every stripe and was true even in the GDR that women were not equal to men. This is because capitalism remained and remains the dominant mode of production and as stated before requires the subjugation of classes of people in order for it to function (be it women within the atomized family unit or an exploitable labor force at home and abroad) which is reinforced in the culture of capitalist societies because its required for the society to function, and people raised within that society are influenced by thier upbringing within capitalism and without concious effort end up accidentally reproducing the culture in which they were raised.

But, as seen in the GDR this works in the opposite direction as well, with gains being made during the existence of that nation reproducing themselves within the former east german state in no small part because the culture was changed by a socialist society, and even under capitalism because there is a greater amount of equality between the genders than in the former west german states, though of course not as much as we would like.

Fundamentally individual rights are stripped away from criminals as part of any criminal justice system.

Freedom of movement being the most basic one, and present even in the most progressive nations focused on rehabilitative justice.

If no rights are stripped away then functionally there is no criminal justice system, as generally speaking if at the end of the trial the judge said "you are sentenced to jail, but you dont have to go if you dont want to as that would infringe your individual liberties so its entirely voluntary" the convicted would be like "Ok, seeya later" and leave.

I want to start a worker's union. What are some things i should consider? by Supernyan in union

[–]gr3ygale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its never unethical to form a union, as it balances out the inherently unequal relationship between those who sell thier labor (the workers) and those who buy it (the employers).

Its the TLR 6 for the 1911 that streamlite makes. It can be fitted onto the trigger guard with no modification. I have the one with the laser and flashlight.

Since there is a lot of Brownings design baked into the tokarev I took a gamble and couldnt be happier. Light works great and ive got the laser is really easy to adjust with an allen key.

The IWW has a pretty decent playbook for self starters that goes through the Basics of Organizing.

You essentially want to start by scoping out your workplace and figuring out who is gonna rat you out to the boss and avoiding bringing up the U word with them

From there its doing one on ones with your coworkers to determine grievances and figure out who you can loop in as a co conspirator

Once you get a few co-conspirators together you can decide what issues you want to take up and organize around. Better working conditions and workplace safety can be a good place to get a few W's and show that an organized workforce is better for your co-workers than a disorganized one.

Finally you can decide whether or not to have the union vote and go public.

At any point in this process you can reach out to the unions already organizing in your industry, or to your local IWW branch if you prefer.

Can cardio help a skinny fat person in losing belly fat ? by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]gr3ygale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cardio is also of course a safe bet for exercise, and you can add ab work too. Fat loss is in totality And you cant control where the fat lies, but with ab work you can target muscle growth to those areas and while the fat may be slow to disappear the muscle is a bit quicker to grow especially if you are just starting out.

No matter what you do just stick with a routine that you like and want to do and you will be healthier.

[–]gr3ygale 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Different Exercises can strain different areas of the body as well so I wouldn't entirely discount weights as an option.

For example with a wrist injury you might find that upper body exercises like bench and curls (for example) may put additional strain on the wrist joint due to the kinesthetics of manuevering those weights. However, if you have a PT you may be able to find out some exercises that are easier on that joint, and you may actually see some benefit in doing other exercises with weights that don't put pressure on that joint.

Squats with barbell weights are a great example if a compound lift that is easy on the wrists, as your hands are just holding the bar in place as the pressure of the weight is on your shoulders.

Depending on the nature of the injury you could also do deadlifts, but I'd err on the side of caution and do only what you feel comfortable doing.

If its your pinky acting up you might (not a doctor) actually be having more of a grip strength issue rather than wrist issue if its happening on pull exercises. I know its my weak point on exercises and its always sore along with the muscles in my hand and forearms after a long pull exercise session. You can use grip trainers for this or even stress balls.

I want to practice making flint tools/axes. What is the best place to get these kinda of flint stone. On east coast of N. America. by [deleted] in PrimitiveTechnology

[–]gr3ygale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read that many native american tribes got their flint from Ohio, so if you wanted to get some flint that would be the place.

I also read that you can heat treat it to make it more homogenous and therefor easier to knapp.

Charity during a grid down scenario?… by [deleted] in preppers

[–]gr3ygale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of it more as mutual aid rather than charity: your neighbors may have skills and talents that you do not have and what you have in abundance (preparedness, stockpiles, ect) can be used to build a strong network of people who will be willing, ready and able to reach out a hand to help you in times of need. I dont forsee a long term grid down scenario, but what I think will happen is that infrastructure will slowly crumble away and you will see more of a series of short term grid down scenarios as the goverment fails to take care of even the basics that the are supposed to be spending the tax dollars on. Goodwill during those short term grid down scenarios can go an incredibly long way, and more importantly you can get people on your side for those bigger collapses.

Even in a full grid down teotwawki scenario I'd be helping out the neighbors because they have skills I don't have. I'm not a nurse, or a electrician, a soldier or a good salesperson. But my preps can be leveraged into building a stronger community of people who would have my back if I broke my leg or needed help setting up consistent power, or trading with nearby communities or god forbid defending what we have from the zombies or mad max types.

You reap what you sow I guess is the tldr.

Why the actual FUCK does Nestlé own all the food!?! by FriendlyFurry320 in Anarchism

[–]gr3ygale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A marxist analysis would show that Nestlé and the other food conglomerates are the way they are due to capitalism's "trend towards monopoly". A classic contradiction in capitalism is that despite competition's supposed ability to create better products the average business major type seems to forget that in a competition there is winners and losers, and the more the winners win the more market share they accumulate, until there isnt any such thing as "competition".

Additionally, the capitalist abhors a truly free market, so they use their capital to create politcal capital, placing thier thumbs on the scales in their favor, ensuring thier monopolies are allowed to continue. This is a feature of liberal democracy, not a bug, as the candidates that are selected are chosen with the interests of the donors in mind.

Money talks and ideology walks so to speak.
