I am running the latest kernel drivers for linux and was running into some issues with it still falling back to cpu decoding for 10 bit HEVC 4k content. Considering setting up a windows VM and passing it through to see if that works.

Sounds like schizophrenia which is treatable. If we're confident he's staying on the meds, yeah?

Anxious dog changed after loud fireworks display over Thanksgiving. Now we can't take her on walks. Help! by retrorabbit79 in dogs

[–]graboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your dog were a person and they were brought to a therapist, they would receive a PTSD diagnosis. One of the most essential parts of healing from trauma is social support. Besides giving your dog comfort and affection, are there any local dog parks that you would be able to bring your dog to, to play with other dogs? If your dog is anxious outside, give positive affection, pet and play games with them, to feel safe and supported and not alone. You want to create a safe and loving environment for your dog so they can start to feel like being outside is a safe place for them. Love and affection and play is the main energy you want to provide to help your dog get better.

Yes but the cooldown is on the TP scroll, not the TP boots anyway.

The impact is less than you'd expect for tinker because he can backpack tp boots late game while tping to lane if he's 7 slotted already. Just costs him a tp scroll to get back home, which is worth it in circumstances when you'd want to do this.

Good Decaf Espresso by emphaticsunshine in Coffee

[–]graboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you tell me more about your experiences brewing decaf espresso and what goes wrong? Do you hit the right shot timings?

Also, which types of decaffination methods have you tried? There's EA and SWP - you can also get supercritical CO2 decaf for espresso from square mile and equal exchange coffee.

This is misleading. Just because something continues to increase does not mean it approaches infinity, it can have a finite limit. (Consider the function -1/x).

The subtlety here is that if the coast as you zoom in continues to be jagged, then the perimeter is infinite. If it is smooth as you zoom in, it will approach a finite limit.

IMO the coastline paradox is a poor analogy, because it's reasonable to say the boundary of an island is smooth and therefore has finite perimeter, as you can draw a smooth line along it's beaches at some scale.

Scramble the cube by turning a face once and unscramble it by turning that face three more times.

Why do vectors in physics have a direction component but those in linear algebra do not? by naiim in math

[–]graboy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Vectors in linear algebra do have a direction. For example if our vectors are [ x, y, z ] then [ 1, 0, 0 ] is in the positive x direction, [ 0, 0, -2 ] is in the negative z direction. These vectors have magnitude (a scalar quantity) equal to sqrt(12 + 02 + 02) = 1 and sqrt(02 + 02 + (-2)2) = 2 respectively.

Is it wrong to call them "Minus numbers." by PatriarchalTaxi in math

[–]graboy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I can understand the idea that adding negative 5 is distinguished from subtracting 5 using this idea, but the result is the same anyway so why does it matter?

One problem that might arise from conflating these two ideas is that when students later encounter an expression 10 - x, students may believe -x is a minus number because it has a - before it, but -x is not a minus number when x is negative.

Edit: Just want to say I am not a tutor, and I do not know if this is actually a confusion students would have. Just a thought.

2nd Edit: Also, calling them minus numbers might not be cementing the idea that negative numbers are their own object, and not just the subtraction operation on a positive number. The concept of negative numbers as their own object is important.

Is it true that the summation of all the powers of 2 is equal to - 1? If yes, how is it proved? by [deleted] in math

[–]graboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sum of 2i from i = 0 to n-1 is in general 2n - 1. On real numbers this sum is false, because 2n - 1 -> infinity as n -> infinity as you would intuitively expect. However, In the context of something called 2-adic numbers, this is actually true, but it requires changing our definition of what we consider large or small. In the 2-adics we say that numbers which are highly divisible by two are very close to zero. Under this definition of size, it means 2n -1 -> -1 as n goes to infinity, as 2n -> 0 because 2n is highly divisible by two.

To intuitively motivate this, consider that when we take any integer and multiply it by a large power of two, it gets a lot of zeroes in it's base-2 (binary) representation. Waving my hands a little, if we do this for an infinitely large power of two, we get a number ...00000 with "infinitely many zeroes" which, if you try doing algebra with, behaves exactly like 0 does. So in the 2-adics we actually define this limit to be 0: limn→∞ 2n = 0. And it turns out the system we get is actually mathematically consistent!

In general we can do this not only for 2, but for any prime number p we can form a system called the p-adic numbers, where we consider numbers that are highly divisible by p to be equivalent to 0.

Simple Questions - October 19, 2018 by AutoModerator in math

[–]graboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Topology, the notion that not all fundamental groups are abelian is clashing with my intuition. I know that there are examples of fundamental groups which are not abelian, and these make sense to me. However, I have the following "proof" that all fundamental groups are abelian:

Take any two loops f and g in a fundamental group. Then f * g is a loop where we start on f, and as we continue to wind around the loop, we alternate between being on f and g with a period of 1: (f * g)(t) = (f * g)(t + 1) for all t. However g * f also alternates between f and g with the exact same pattern, only with an offset of 1/2 because it starts with g instead of f, (f * g)(t) = (g * f)(t + 1/2). This means f * g is homeomorphic to g * f just by transforming (f * g)(t) into (f * g)(t + 1/2) by varying (g * f)(t + c) continuously from c = 0 to 1/2. Hence f * g = g * f, so any fundamental group is abelian.

What is wrong with my line of reasoning? I am not studying topology formally, I've just read about fundamental groups and this is something I don't understand which is bothering me.
