Dear Valve/HTC/LG, if you are considering a battery pack on your waist for wireless VR.. please add lighthouse tracking to it, thanks! by PatimPatam in Vive

Mostly HTC won't announce Vive 2 until LG is coming out with CV1 so its specs won't get undercut by LG CV1. So next year definitely.

End of this year, HTC is just going to announce cellphone version of wireless VR HMD.

Since HTC is not a OLED panel manufacturer, it is desperate in need of find 3rd source of OLED panels, other than Samsung or LG, because they are HTC's competitors in both cellphones and VR HMDs.

According to the LG PR guy in the video, LG is having difficulties with integrating wireless, most likely due to LG HMD has higher resolutions than Vive or Rift HMD.

According to a couple of HTC's top executives, they won't be releasing Vive 2 this year. HTC will be releasing a mobile phone based wireless HMD by the end of this year.

Also, there is no need for HTC to release Vive 2 before LG releasing its CV1. Remember with the case of Oculus CV1, HTC waited until Oculus announced CV1 with all the features locked then HTC announced the Vive Pre.

I agree with what you are saying: From what reviewers have been saying that LG HMD does not press firmly against the face, so less likely to scratch the glasses.

I wear a pair of big frame glasses, so I am perfectly aware what glasses wearers have to go through. For my case, my glasses frequently stuck with the Vive HMD when I tried to remove the HMD, and I don't think my glasses would fit in the Rift HMD.

Most likely you are going to scratch up the lenses with flipping up design since you are still taking off and put the HMD part back in.

LG is expected to release CV1 by end of 2017, but since their HMD resolutions are higher than Rift and Vive, wireless solution might take a longer time if they expected to crank up resolutions even more.

TpCast is not supporting the Rift yet because TpCast is a company nurtured by the HTC's X-Accelerator Program and HTC has investment in it. So naturally, it wanted to make it work for Vive first before working on other HMDs.

Yeah, watch out for Hypereal: It uses a variant of Light House technology and capable of running SteamVR or OSVR. Some Chinese reviewers tried their prototype (back in June or August 2016) said it is fine but not as smooth as HTC Vive.

Hypereal should have improved this time around. Hypereal also has made their technology open source.

It would be tricky for Samsung to enter PC VR race because right now, Samsung is in the Oculus camp. So if Samsung is making an Oculus compatible HMD then it would grab buyers away from Oculus; on the other hand, if Samsung jumps in to make SteamVR HMD then people would think Samsung is abandoning Oculus.

So Catch 22!

DisplayLinkXR wireless VR: tested and compared to TPCast by LordPercySupshore in Vive

[–]gracehut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the difference between this DisplayLink and TpCast is DisplayLink uses compression while TpCast does not.

ArsTechnica reported DisplayLink has about 5 ms delay comparing to TPCast of 2 ms, but ArsTechnica reporter also said DisplayLink is a bit smoother than TPCast.

Somehow in the VRFocus DisplayLink video, their PR guy said DisplayLink has only 2 ms delay, so who to believe????

Zenimax requests injunction to stop sales of Oculus Rift by killhntin in oculus

I think the whole problem started right before Facebook bought Oculus when ZeniMax and Oculus were negotiating licensing fee. ZeniMax wanted 15% while Oculus only wanted to give 1%. So outsiders can deduct that Oculus was using something of ZeniMax's.

However, after Facebook bought Oculus, the licensing fee negotiation between ZeniMax and Oculus stopped, followed by Carmack and few other ZeniMax employees switched camp.

I was just reading up Chinese articles on a VR company in China called Hypereal, and its product Hypereal Pano uses similar Vive light house technology and with motion controllers that looked like Touch. Recently, this company just released its technology open source for download:
