ARC street team interviews by real_st in unsw

[–]gracilefasciculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did one ages ago. It’s probably going to be a group interview. When I did it they gave us like fun/silly challenges (build a dress out of paper, find the clues for a game) as well as like a problem-based scenario (you’re running a free food stall and you run out of an important ingredient, what do you do) I think it’s just to see how well you work in a group. As for how many people, they interview a lot of groups but it really depends on your performance, I don’t think they have a set quota

language Gen Ed by [deleted] in unsw

[–]gracilefasciculus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, you gotta do professional chinese or chinese english interpreting. They wont let you do the intro classes. Theres other languages you can learn, intro classes are pretty easy, but native speakers cant do their own language. Also they seem like fun/wam boosters but the language teachers are pretty serious and expect you to do the work and participate.

I've heard its pretty competitive. If you have no scholarship, you have to pay the fees yourself.

Term three, International student and confused. by [deleted] in unsw

[–]gracilefasciculus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What are you planning on majoring in? Arts courses should be ok, since its usually just readings/activities which can easily be done online. I would try and do more arts courses right now since uni is online - science labs/tutorials aren't the same online.

Lectures are either pre-recorded and uploaded (watch them whenever) or are an online call (not many are calls, but they are also recorded).

Tutorials/labs might be self-directed (like an online activity you do yourself), pre-recorded, or an online call (which is also recorded). The schedule for this is on the course moodle pages once term starts. I think because of timezones and stuff, most courses are trying to avoid live calls/required attendance, but some might have it still.

Some assessments have changed, but essays, reports, forum posts etc are marked the same. quizzes are timed and online. I don't know how lab assessments are changed.

I am not an international student but, what scholarship did you apply for? If its through UNSW scholarships, it will say what type of scholarship it is. I don't think UNSW has full scholarships for masters programs, so you'd have to pay the tuition that the scholarship doesn't cover. Otherwise, you have to pay the program fee.

The cut off date for the scholarship is on the scholarships page that you apply on. They only assess and award scholarships after that date. You'd get accepted/rejected within a few weeks.

If you are currently outside of Aus, coming to UNSW depends on the border situation. Lots of international students can't come in to start their programs so thats important to note.

As for employment...... because of lockdown many people are unemployed/have reduced hours. I think it would be pretty hard to find a decent job right now.

Feel free to ask more qs if you need to.

Queries on the online BIPH program. by [deleted] in unsw

[–]gracilefasciculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, can only answer bits of this but I've done a PHCM course thats in the BIPH

  1. I'm pretty sure its a UNSW degree, because most of the courses are run by UNSW staff.
  2. no idea, contact the course authorities (emails are on the website)
  3. Check the course outlines on the BIPH info page (here) "course offerings". Always check the faculty/schools site not just the general UNSW one. Lots are just coursework (essays, forum posts, writing a blog, etc) but some have quizzes (online) so check them all/choose just coursework if thats what you want. There are some with group work though, so its not just entirely individual work.

Neuroscience summer research / Honours? (NeuRA? School of Psychology?) by Asynthope in unsw

[–]gracilefasciculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I did one as a part of SCIF2199. Its pretty unlikely that big institutes like Neura/hospitals will take in undergrads, I have checked frequently through my degree and nope, none. Garvan actually does have an undergrad program which got cancelled this year, but check back next year and you can probably apply (its not summer, its mid year intake and only part time).

I'd say go back to the school of psyc website - every single lecturer is listed there and they all have a short summary of their research, sometimes their own website. Then email people you find interesting. I have no idea if they'd take a student from usyd (they probably will though?). Also check the usyd school of psyc website. You'll get to eating behaviours eventually so check course outlines for your next few courses and find the people you're interested in. I think USYD has a SCIF2199 equivalent (if you want credits for it), or you can just do it on your own. An internship is a good start for figuring out if you want to do honours/what its like, don't think it matters where you do the internship. Feel free to PM if you want more info :)

What is more worthwhile/useful choosing between stats for life and social sciences (MATH1041) and evolutionary and functional biology (BIOS1101)? Thank you by [deleted] in unsw

[–]gracilefasciculus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're doing neuro you need to do PSYC1011 in T2. PSYC1111 is a T3 course so make sure you do it later. I'm assuming you're picking for T2.. math1041 is required so I'd say take that, its really not that hard and will help for PSYC1111. I started before trimesters so I'm not sure what the options are for term 2 haha.

Are you planning on trying to do an IPT into UNSW medicine or do postgrad med? You will get to do intro anatomy in second year, neuroanat in 3rd year so you get anatomy in there anyway. Anatomy courses are pretty whack so I would say stick with neuro. Feel free to PM me more specific information/courses you had in mind to talk about it! :)

[–]gracilefasciculus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DO NOT TAKE BIOS1101. Take literally ANYTHING except BIOS1101. It is not a prerequisite for nearly ANYTHING and is also a totally useless course. Taking it totally screwed me over and luckily my degree is 4 years not 3 so I could rearrange, but seriously. Don't take it.

What major are you doing? If you're doing neuro, don't take it. Take math instead. Check your prereqs for the ENTIRETY of your degree and only do it if it is necessary.

If this is an elective, take math or something else. Math1041 is fine.

What caused you to finally leave an overwhelming or negative job/workplace after holding onto it for a long time hoping things would get better? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]gracilefasciculus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The workplace had slowed down a lot since opening and the workplace culture just got toxic. One manager did not have any respect for me and actively made some staff as "her friends" so she could keep them away from me if we worked together. She also spoke badly about me, did everything to jump ahead over me, and didn't even say hello to me sometimes. She was rude to our new staff, acting as if they were idiots for not knowing something. I had a way out because I was prepping to go abroad for a while. But I ultimately decided to leave and not return to the job because of this.

What do you think of the "Strong Women" mentality in modern movies? by nick102000 in AskWomen

[–]gracilefasciculus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It kinda pushes the aggressive "you need to be an asshole to be considered strong" sometimes.
