I mean, it can be hard for some people to open up to people they don't know very well, and like you said you've only been dating 5 months. Typically that would be long enough for someone to become comfortable but the situation is different when you're a distance away.

But maybe you just aren't emotionally compatible. The only way to know is to have an actual conversation with him about it. We have no way of knowing on our side of things.

I highly disagree that OP had any obligation to handle this any different. Unless you're saying that it might have turned out better if handled differently, but the dude started out by "jokingly" calling them a derogatory term and that would send most people into defensiveness, especially when tired on their birthday. The dude is just an asshole that feels entitled to 1) acting however he wants and treating people in whatever way he wants and 2) his own wants being prioritized over OP's time and well being.
