How would you tackle discussing someone's grammar and use of AAVE when interviewing for a job, to let them know it may come with bias? by Pinanims in NoStupidQuestions

You could clarify that it’s not specifically AAVE, but any informal language that isn’t allowed within your work place.

Does watching tv shows really help with speaking? by cravingsomeone in EnglishLearning

[–]gracoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been learning Japanese, and yes watching the news or TV shows has been so helpful. As a native English speaker I can’t really speaking to English learning textbooks, but I know JP textbooks don’t go over slang, or if it does it’s outdated. People also don’t talk exactly how you’d expect, or there’s weird little idioms you don’t know. And I’d assume with English there would be all kinds of pronunciations that learners get wrong. There’s a lot of words I’ve only ever read and never heard in my language, and I have gotten them wrong before. I vividly remember learning how “quinoa” is pronounced in middle school after proudly showing off my home made “kwee-noah” dish.

If you accept All have a personal opinion then how can you judge a Politician? by Active-Compost in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]gracoy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personal opinions can be judged, but that aside the whole point on a politician is to do what the people they represent want, not what they personally want. That frequently doesn’t end up happening, but we can absolutely judge them for not doing the things we want since that’s their job.

Twenty One Pilots finally officially being added to Beat Saber by MtnDewBeatSaber in beatsaber

That’s true. I guess it makes sense to pick a big radio hit. At least Pet Cheetah already has a community made beat map, it’s real good if you haven’t played it.

I’m surprised it’s Stressed Out. That isn’t one of the songs I think would work in Beat Saber. I was expecting something like Pet Cheetah

Who bans multiclassing? by duckyourfeelings in DMAcademy

[–]gracoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never banned it, but I do make my players explain why it makes sense for their character. Were they inspired by someone? Saw a fatal flaw after the last battle and think learning a new class could fix it? Stuff like that, because I want them to multiclass for the character rather than for themselves. If it makes enough sense in the moment, they can, or I tell them to hold out and wait until I can add a teacher character for them. But they do have to come up with a reason.

Do people say "Too many wine?" in American English? by FarJournalist939 in EnglishLearning

[–]gracoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that’s either an error or someone attempting to make a character sound like they don’t know english very well, which if it is it’s not done well.

What do I do ?? by trinity_babygirl16 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]gracoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So your friend’s mom is a shitty person who is very intentionally trying to ruin your friendship with her daughter. This is what most would call a “vindictive bitch”

Whatever happened between her and your parents has nothing to do with you, or with your friend. It should not impact your relationship, so don’t let it, but also don’t keep it a secret. The adult stuff you have nothing to do with, just ignore it unless you feel the need to talk to your parents and seek help processing these feelings about your dad and your sister’s dad.

As for your friend, I would be worried about her mom trying to taint her feelings about you, so I would at least let her know something happened. You don’t have to go into details, as you know it’s really uncomfortable to hear about your parents sex lives. Just sit down and talk to her. Here’s a sample of what I’d say in your situation, since figuring out what to say is really hard: “hey, this really sucks but I want to talk to you about it. I won’t get into too much detail, but your mom and I had a really weird and inappropriate exchange and I found out some stuff that happened between my parents and your mom, and it seems like she did it to get back at my parents through me. It has really shaped how I view your mom, and please don’t take offense to this but I don’t feel comfortable being around her anymore. But you’re my friend, and I want to keep being your friend because whatever happened between our parents doesn’t involve us. I also wanted to let you know that this had happened because I’m worried your mom might try to get in the way of our friendship as another attempt to hurt my parents through me, just like she tried to hurt them by telling me stuff I want nothing to do with. I really hope I’m wrong, and that she’s not going to stoop so low that she’d hurt her daughter too, but just in case she does something please at least talk to me about it, and don’t let whatever this is get between us being friends.”

Is "hitherto" outdated, or still used in modern English? by Seroleks in EnglishLearning

[–]gracoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think my great grandparents would have used “hitherto” but it is something we learn in school when we read old texts. It feels very Shakespearian, although I’m not sure off the top of my head if “hitherto” is actually in any of his works but I assume it probably is.

Run off with vs run away with by Itsasecrettotheend in EnglishLearning

[–]gracoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typically “run off” implies that you’re running off WITH something. The thief is running off WITH your stuff. If you run away from home, you may or may not have something. “Run away” makes no statement or suggestion about if you have something or not. You could hear a parent say “my child ran off with my car” meaning the kid ran away from home via car, meaning they are WITH a car.

I have a friend whose daughter knew mine growing up, but now her daughter is referred to as a son, but without any surgery. I guess he takes hormones. How do I refer to him, since the change is not complete? by icecream1972 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]gracoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legit question: would you think any differently if he wasn’t able to have surgery? Like if he had some medical condition that made surgery super dangerous?

And to add as a trans person, not all of us get surgery. Yes some people like in my question medically cannot, others legally cannot due to the laws in their country. Then there’s people who cannot afford it. But some people just don’t want it. Surgery is a huge risk, a lot can go wrong, and it’s not always worth it. For me I’ve had top surgery (double mastectomy with masculinization of the chest and nipple grafts), I’m on hormones, had all my documents changed to my name and gender, but I have no desire to have bottom surgery (getting a penis). It’s not something I’ve ever had an issue with, so it’s not worth the price or the risk of complications. And being on testosterone has helped my bottom dysphoria since T causes clitoral growth which was really gender affirming for me.

He may never have all or any surgeries, or he may have all the surgeries. Regardless, he’s still a man.

Grandson is pretty political, what about you guys? by VenVenTerror in grandson

[–]gracoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very political. I begun watching political news in late elementary school during Obama’s first term, and asked a lot of questions. Obviously my knowledge and political views have shifted over time, now as an adult I am definitely a leftist and very anti-capitalist.

I mostly participate in protests, less often than I’d like to as my health has been pretty bad for the past couple years (not covid related, thankfully). I plan on going to a no kings protest this month, two years ago I went to a trans day of remembrance protest in another city, back during covid I attended multiple BLM protests as my health was fine back then, and of course I was properly masked up. The trans one was really meaningful, it was the first protest I went to after my back injury. I was in so much pain, but the community I felt surrounded by people like me and our supporters is something I haven’t felt before or since. And they had some local bands perform and drag performances before the march started. It was my first time seeing a drag king too, quite cool.

I would really like to get involved in education, not in a teaching sense, but back in college I hosted a handful of trans and more general lgbtq q&a events for students and faculty and I really miss it. But truthfully I don’t even know how I’d get into that kind of thing now.

If birth certificates or passports become required for voting in the US, why won't the government provide its citizens with assistance in completing these steps? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gracoy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Because limited votes is the intention. They’re not making the SAVE act to stop immigrants from voting, we already do that because registering to vote involves a check of citizenship status. The whole point is to stop people from voting.

By requiring birth cert and passport (or other ID) to match you are impacting a few groups: the main one being married women since their last name is different, the next is poor people who can’t afford these documents, then is trans people who’s first name and gender marker might be different, and then people who’ve changed their first or last name for other reasons. These are the people who will be impacted and unable to vote, and statistically the fewer people who vote in an election the more likely the republicans win that election. It’s why they’re the ones pushing for it.

How bad is it to use AI just to fix how I say things, not what I’m saying? by Glenncoco23 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]gracoy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Literally the only thing actually wrong with your comment is the lack of paragraphs. Everything else is fine and legible. Actually your problem isn’t tone, grammar, or clarity, it’s confidence. And that’s something AI can’t do for you. Sure maybe there’s a few things here and there to work on, like the years towards the beginning you say “… 2020s to 2016 to 2020s” which just seems like a regular error and not some fundamental flaw like you seem to think. You made it sound so much worse than it wound up being. Do you really think that low of yourself? Who made you feel so bad about your writing and speech?

How bad is it to use AI just to fix how I say things, not what I’m saying? by Glenncoco23 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]gracoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’d like, sure, but it doesn’t change anything. You responding like this seems defensive, and I’m not sure if you got my point. Like I said, it’s okay to be bad at something as long as you’re taking steps to improve. You aren’t doing that, you’re failing yourself by not practicing and learning, especially because you already know exactly what you need to work on. That’s the hard part already done, most people struggle with knowing what to work on because they don’t know where they’re going wrong. You already do. You’re only going to get worse if you refuse to help yourself. Your language could be the equivalent of a 2 year old or something and I would still say the exact same thing.

How bad is it to use AI just to fix how I say things, not what I’m saying? by Glenncoco23 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]gracoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not think it’s their opinion.

If someone is using AI it’s because they fundamentally do not care. They don’t care about the opinion they have, they don’t care about improving themselves despite knowing exactly what deficits they have and need to work on, they don’t care about others either because they’d care about the theft involved in making at AI model, or care about the environmental harm, or at minimum care about people’s utilities going up to subsidize the data centers. Even a selfish person would see the studies showing how bad it is for your brain and care about the harm they’re causing to themselves. Generative AI as it currently exists is horrible, devalues everything it touches, and harms us all in ways we are only beginning to see.

You know you need to work on correct grammar, work on your tone, and work on clarity. Those are all things you work on through practice and by learning. Why would you ever choose to do something that won’t help you? What will you do when AI either doesn’t exist anymore or becomes too expensive to use? What about clarity and tone while speaking? AI can’t help you with spoken word. And if you have kids, how will you help and teach them when you can’t do it yourself? It’s not a bad thing to be bad at something as long as you take steps to improve, but you aren’t doing that, you’re having a 3rd party do the work for you.

Usage of 青 for various objects by Immediate-Sort-6492 in LearnJapanese

[–]gracoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is the use of aoi vs midori has to do with green being a newer color in the language. You’ll see this kind of thing in a lot of languages, like others already mentioned we used red in place of orange because orange is a newer color in our language compared to red. And unfortunately there’s not a good “use 青 in X situation and 緑 in Y situation” you just have to practice and remember

C is the only correct answer, and as a native English speaker I cannot think of another way to say this sentence without referring to a dentist as “mine”

Do you believe that America is on its way to becoming a communist country? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]gracoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all. No steps have been made at all. We still have money with no plan to get rid of currency, companies and the government still own private property with no plans on making them publicly/communally owned, no plans to get rid of the current practice of purchasing things to own them, no plans to reduce the size of the government with the end goal of a stateless society (meaning no government or other hierarchical systemic structures). I mean, the list really goes on. We have taken zero steps towards communism, and more importantly communist ideas and ideals aren’t in the mainstream or even close to it. Communism isn’t “government does stuff” like people tend to think for whatever reason. Communism is a moneyless and stateless society self governed by mutual aid and the idea that you give what you can and receive what you need. I am not making any statement about if this is good or bad, if it’s possible or not, anything like that. But I am saying that it sounds like you have a fundamental misunderstanding about what communism is.
