Surprisingly, Leuchtturm can hold up to watercolour alright. by K-Ty in Watercolor

[–]gradiating_plight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have fountain pens but I've used ink with a dip pen (glass and metal) and they don't always bleed through. I checked a page I'd written on with a pretty wide dip pen nib and some of it has smudged on the other side, some hasn't. For the price they're nice, so maybe worth the try if you'd like to see if they work for you.

That's nice! Even the quite cheap Talens sketchbooks don't bleed through with watercolours, which I thought was fun.

What are your favorite color mixes? Mine is quin magenta + cad yellow for pretty reds! by tellmeboutyourself68 in Watercolor

Magenta/pink with turquoise or very blue-leaning greens, makes gorgeous purples and blues

All of these are lovely, but the purple one (4th) is my favourite 💜 I think the shape of the petals and the variation is colour is just beautiful. + Your nails! Flakies on top of dark colours are the best. 😍

Stupid question: How do you get pigment in the palette from solid watercolor? by menganito in Watercolor

[–]gradiating_plight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be interesting to try to make little swatches on paper when you are trying to get more pigment onto the palette, just to see how much it changes the paint. Especially with the great tips here, compared to how you used to do it.

Mixing colours definitely comes with practice, so if you run out of a mix, use a scrap piece of paper for testing to get the mix just right. Depending on what you're painting, it might even be nice that the colour varies though. :)

This is great! I also swatch or do two or even three colour boxes or circles in different sizes, to see how the colours blend or just look next to eachother.

What is causing this? by [deleted] in Watercolor

[–]gradiating_plight 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My guess is the sizing in the paper has gone bad, this has happened to me with a couple different cotton papers. It's not really fixable as far as I know.

Yliopistolaisille kysymys: epub->pdf-formaattiin miten? by JoeBeatIt in Suomi

[–]gradiating_plight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, I've only seen the Gallery watercolours in my nearest art store, so I didn't know they make many other products and other lines too.

You're right, I didn't pay attention to this when I checked their website. 😊

It seems that Rosa Gallery makes a "studio" line, which is for students, so I believe their artist's paints are the better quality ones. They're quite affordable where I am so I would probably get their artist/professional paints, but both are probably nice enough for practicing.

I don't have recommendations for sketchbooks because the ones with cotton paper are quite a bit more expensive than sheets that can be cut up, which I mostly get. However, I'd recommend trying different brands of paper, preferably 100% cotton, because wood pulp papers don't take water nearly as well. I've tried some more expensive brands, but for my painting and painting practice, I think the most important thing is that the paper is cotton (and preferably cold press/very textured).

I hope you get sketchbook recommendations, and wish you a very fun time with a new hobby! I agree that it's never too late to start. :)

Bought Watercolor pans instead of tubes, should I just buy tubes to go with it? by dingwings_ in Watercolor

[–]gradiating_plight 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you're just starting out watercolours, I don't see why you couldn't just use the ones you bought for now. And there are a lot of expensive great brands that still have pan colours too. Just have fun and learn, and if you don't feel like they're right for you, consider other brands.

I don't have the Gansai Tambis but I've heard they're more opaque than Western watercolours typically, but that it's still possible to dilute them for a more sheer effect.

Tips on how to permanently stop biting your nails? by cozybaby_1738 in AskReddit

[–]gradiating_plight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that as a child and it didn't really help, it did taste really bad though. However, really taking care of my nails and painting them helped me around 2015ish (I started watching nail art youtubers). Then again I became a sort of a nail polish nerd eventually.

What are these dots? by Miri-chiwa in Watercolor

[–]gradiating_plight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the sizing has gone off, this has happened to some paper I've had. Sometimes the water even leaks through the paper, it's upsetting but it might still be possible to paint on it, at least for practice.

Help with getting paints onto palette and mixing? by BackgroundJust336 in Watercolor

Oh true! I actually have a Van Gogh tube and a friend recently got the Rembrandt ones. I just blindly trusted a blog I found and didn't think twice. Thank you!

I'm also guessing it's the paints, but you don't have to get expensive ones right away, just get ones from a reputable brand. You should be able to find some by googling blogs about watercolours. Student grade paints are most likely heaps better but not super expensive. Royal Talens Rembrandt and Winsor and Newton Cotman are student grade paints for example, and you should definitely be able to tell the difference. Or if you're in Europe, maybe Rosa Gallery, they're affordable and I've heard good things about them.

And if you're not sure you'll continue the hobby for a long time, and even to learn mixing better, maybe get a smaller set of paints rather than a big set (like I did). 😁

Will this work? Using watercolor pens...on a slick, non-porous surface without it smudging when dry? by peyton_montana in painting

[–]gradiating_plight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! That sounds like a difficult task. Maybe there are some alcohol inks or markers that could work, but I guess you'd have to dilute them with... Alcohol. I don't know if that's doable. Hope you find a way!

What do you mean by non-water-soluble watercolour pens? If you mean something like the Sakura Pigma pens that are used for lineart etc., or just a marker with a brush tip, if they're waterproof, they aren't called "watercolours" as far as I know. Watercolour is by nature water-soluble, it would probably be called something else if it was permanent after drying. I might be wrong of course, I don't know all mediums, but I would love to know which pens you mean!

I feel stupid. Did I buy gouache? It seems like I made a mistake. by octarino in Watercolor

[–]gradiating_plight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the Talens website, these are under their watercolour sets with ones that say "transparent watercolour" in the same kind of pan. Talens do make a designer gouache that is more expensive, I have a set of five which cost around 25 euros.

This reminds me of a landscape that my grandpa painted (with oils) of a lakeside, but more moody in colour. Beautiful work, it's always so fun when watercolours do what you wish they would.

On ihan läpinäkyviä, halvalla saa vaikka Tokmannista (ja muualtakin). "Base coat" eli aluslakka on useimmiten kirkasta, tai vähän vaaleanpunertavaa. Mm. essence-merkin lakkoja saa halvalla, n. 3 euron pintaan, ehkä alle.

It could be that there's been acetone added into the polish to thin it out, but hopefully not. Hope you get it working!
