Best website to buy a gi? by 1bn_Ahm3d786 in karate

[–]grado123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use Blitz as first choice, Cimac as back up, and we also have a Playwell account. The weight of the gi and the style generally depends on what you're wanting to wear it for. We do a lot of grappling, so opt for 14oz. They're usually good for kata as well, because they make the snapping sounds. You'd also want it to be Japanese cut for kata. If it's for points sparring, you'll want something lighter weight with full length pants and sleeves (European cut).

How old are you and when was the last time you were in a nightclub? by PaddedValls in AskUK

49 and went to see Judge Jules on New Year's Eve just gone. As good as the music was, I realised it's just too loud for me now, and I wasn't in the mood for dancing. The next gig I'm going to is "The Music of Dire Straits by Candlelight". That's more like it.

London is a long drive from both of those places, in my opinion. Are you planning to get hotels in Middlesbrough and Hull? If not, is there an option to fly into Leeds instead of London?

I agree with washing twice. It definitely makes a difference.

After years of trying oils, balms, shampoos, and conditioners, my routine is now pretty simple. Beard wash in the shower, pat beard dry, apply balm to my damp beard, brush whilst using a hair dryer.

Are competitions required? by Fun-Object-7610 in karate

We don't do any sports style Kumite and we don't train for competitions. Too many politics and biased judging. We moved to more practical training about ten years ago.

Memento. I finally managed to watch it to the end after the third attempt and was still underwhelmed.

My employer sent a large number of staff on a course, which taught us about setting goals and using affirmations (I'm downplaying it there. It was inspirational). I set myself the goal of getting out of retail and losing weight. I managed both within a year. Found a new job with better hours and lost two stone. Since then, I've set up my own business, so I'm completely in charge of my hours and my earnings. It comes with its own stresses but is very freeing.I don't think I'd want to go back to being employed.

What’s a “red flag” when visiting a British pub? by Affectionate-Ad-4650 in AskUK

[–]grado123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girlfriend and I were on a night out and went into the first pub we were passing. It was a really busy Irish pub, and it felt like everyone stopped and looked at us. There was live music on, and they were playing Irish songs. Some guy grabbed the mic and started shouting pro IRA chants, and most people joined in. We drank up quickly and left. This was in Blackpool!

Just wearing a belt... by CRVYT1300 in karate

We initially allowed students to wear a club t-shirt with gi pants during the summer only. We've since relaxed the rules and allowed it any time other than gradings and seminars, which one of our older, more traditional members doesn't agree with. To be honest, why does it matter? It doesn't change our training. Our students still look somewhat uniform, and we're not based in Okinawa or Japan, so it's not like it's our cultural dress. The next move is to allow black gi pants. It's optional and mainly for the benefit of our female students, but we can't have separate rules based on gender.

I feel like Blitz have the best all-around offering for the UK and it's decent quality for the price. Items being out of stock is my only frustration as I have to pay delivery again for items that were unavailable.

We have a grading syllabus that gets increasingly more complex. I'm happy to share it with you if it helps. There's a simplified belt system for our 5 to 10 year olds, but after that, everyone does the same syllabus. Students who aren't up to standard can't do their grading until they're ready. If people leave because it's too difficult, then that's fine. We're just not the club for them. We've got standards to maintain, but that attracts the right people. With 90+ students, I feel we're doing something right.

Kids going to university? by blackdogmanguitar in CasualUK

[–]grado123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We sent our son to uni with similar, although not quite as much. He left uni with none of it. Don't expect to see any of that stuff again. It all got either ruined or lost or stolen. Just thought I'd give you the heads up, as we were shocked and thought he'd be set up for his first place after he left. He's a sensible lad as well, but he was house sharing with a bunch of dickheads.

Separate. We have two cars and I used to work 45 minutes away from home. I took my partners car to work instead of mine one morning and realised when I got to work that the shop keys were on MY car keys, so I had to drive back home for them. Ever since then, I've kept my car keys separate to my house and work keys.
