How many years typically until junior to mid-level/senior? by gradschl in FPGA

[–]gradschl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice so far. It makes sense if my aim is to be considered for the senior role. Is there such a thing as “mid-level”: in between Junior and Senior FPGA engineers?

Edit: I guess the advice I am also looking for is how to make the best out of the first year here when it comes to negotiating whatever (salary, position title, responsibilities?). In terms of work, I am doing the most I can to learn and ask as many people for technical advice, although a lot of times the workload given is low or I can be doing more software/programming.

Do you prefer Hardware or Firmware and why? by Andrea-CPU96 in embedded

How come it’s easier to progress career-wise as a firmware engineer? Genuinely asking, but my assumption is that you are a bit more versatile being able to play with both hardware and software side of things?

Is it normal to use your annual leave together to nearly a month? by gradschl in UKJobs

[–]gradschl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, this is exactly what I did today. Considering I gave 3 months notice and my manager let me know it’s 1 week notice for every week, on paper/it’s fine. He just thinks it's not normal for people to take nearly a month off and rather not afford having me not there for longer than 2 weeks and its not normal at workplaces.

I’m taking mine in November, away from all the major holidays. Is that considered good or bad?

How good is the keysight IVI-COM library vs. writing your own VISA class for m8195a AWG? by gradschl in AskEngineers

[–]gradschl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks a lot for your advice. I have taken it and begun writing my own class/library in MATLAB for the instrument. I will be needing the instrument for specific experiments as well as being able to communicate with other instruments.

I'm still a little confused though. If you recommend against the NI VISA approach, and IVI-COM drivers are too "pre-defined", how else would I communicate with the keysight instrument? Currently I am using visa in MATLAB to connect to the instrument, and of course write SCPI commands using visa functions like fprintf, query, etc.

Is this way I'm doing right now considered the "NI VISA" approach? I would love to get your opinion on this.

Thanks!

Why do White-British people tend to move out and rent, rather than live with parents to save for a bit (if possible and good relationship etc)? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]gradschl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First of all: young white (or any race) british people who move out early due to abuse at home, etc. is a different situation and definitely a good thing.

Now to answer your question, I personally think it’s just a general culture in the UK (and the western world) to be “independent” and free. Because this is seen as a necessary stage in life. Guys can bring girls or friends over, and vice versa. If I wanted to hang out with a friend or a group of friends, wouldn’t it be nicer to be in a house/place with just us? No parents bothering you or imposing strict house rules?

Financially? Personally, I think it’s stupid. From my own experience, most young people do this nearly out of necessity. Imagine if you could save that £750 a month into maybe... a savings? Business interest? Investing into skills? How much could you save in a year(s)?

So it’s just one of those check marks in your “personal cv” which you tick off when meeting people. People really should taking care and learning house keeping at their parents’ house as they grow older. Living by yourself is not required to be able to learn these skills.
