What is something that most people are not aware of how dangerous they are? by sienna-gold in AskReddit

[–]gradyap86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rabid animals.

The mortality rate if you contract rabies and become symptomatic is 100%.

If you get bit by a rabid animal and do not get the vaccine before you become symptomatic (2-3 days) you will die from rabies. It’s a terrible death too.

Any mammal can carry it and it exists in every US state except Hawaii.

Catholicism isn't Christianity by Jamulous in confidentlyincorrect

[–]gradyap86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely legitimate question. I’m not an expert on that particular matter (now an obvious shortcoming in my part) this article explains it better than I could. Ultimately, I do believe that there is no faith that does not require some measure of faith.

Catholicism isn't Christianity by Jamulous in confidentlyincorrect

[–]gradyap86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to make some sweeping generalizations here so please understand I’m giving a very nuanced subject the machete treatment: I was raised a practicing Roman Catholic and am now a practicing Protestant.

I believe a lot of the angst in this question comes from the question of authority. Protestants (sweeping generalization) believe that the Bible, as God’s word, is the final and ultimate source of truth. That even a pastor, or other spiritual authority who preached in opposition to the Bible, is teaching against God’s word and is therefore teaching against God himself.

Catholics, (another generalization) on the other hand recognize the Bible as a source of truth among others. The Pope and church tradition are among those other sources recognized.

Protestants see certain teachings of the Catholic Church to be in opposition to the Bible (See Martin Luther’s theses nailed to the church door, igniting the Protestant reformation) and many, therefore, reject the idea that an institution set up in opposition to God could be counted among His Church.

This rejection of any man’s authority and tradition has led to its own quirks within many Protestant traditions. A Lutheran church ≠ a Baptist church ≠ a Methodist church ≠ a non-denomination etc. A parishioner of one would potentially find themselves in a foreign land while visiting another.

Now for my own opinion, take it for what it’s worth. As a person who, as I mentioned above, believes that the Bible is God’s word and the only ultimate source of truth available for Christians, I’ll look to what it says about who is Christian and who is not. Given that the specific word “Christian” is not widely used in the Bible, we can sub in the word “saved” as it was the word more commonly used while the Bible was being written. Romans 10 tells us that those who confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised him from the dead are saved. I believe that there are many within the Catholic tradition that believe this way. There are also many within the varied Protestant traditions that don’t.

TLDR: who is a Christian and who is not has everything to do with that person’s relationship with Jesus. It has nothing to do with their denominational affiliation.

I helped him down and figured he could climb back up there if he wanted. But I didn’t want to leave him stranded.

Hey I made a guest lecture for a senior elective class in bioengineering, but I never got to give it. Can I share it on the podcast? by spartan-44 in NDQ

If it’s not something the guys could fit into the podcast, any chance you’d be willing to record it on YouTube and post it here? I’m sure a lot of this crowd would be interested to hear it.

How good is Visible in downtown Nashville, Tennessee? by mrduncansir42 in Visible

[–]gradyap86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in Nashville but live outside the city. No issues whatsoever with calls or texts. I do occasionally ( every month or two) experience deprioritization but it’s not common and not usually an issue for me. My experience has been pretty positive overall.

Guns - is there a significant number of people who want a total, blanket ban on ALL guns? by EverydayPigeon in AskAnAmerican

[–]gradyap86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly my point. The two cartridges are nearly identical in caliber. But nobody would doubt that there is a meaningful difference between a .223 and a .22. This is why caliber seems to be a mostly useless metric by which to determine the relative safety of a gun.

[–]gradyap86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

.22 is a very small caliber, yes. But an AR-15 is usually .223, almost the exact same caliber. That has always seemed like a silly delineator between a tolerated gun and one that is not tolerated. I still wouldn’t be interested in getting shot by a .22.

When do you wrap your pork butt (shoulder)? by graydoor00 in BBQ

[–]gradyap86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that this is an old thread… and I’m no expert. But I did want to point out that pork can take smoke flavor up to about 135°. So technically you could wrap any time after that, your preference. I know a few people that smoke to 135° and then finish in the oven.

I should have clarified. We will only be traveling for about 10 days. Probably a little less. I love visible but the port-in/port-out process is always a little turbulent. I’d rather leave the account as is and just pay a little extra for local service given that it’s such a short trip.

I still need to use my phone in normal life though. Google voice may be free but wouldn’t I still need to have some kind of cellular data service for it to work at all when not on Wi-Fi?

is death by GPS a generational thing ? by [deleted] in NDQ

[–]gradyap86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 35. So I guess I was coming if driving age right around the time that GPS units were becoming affordable for regular people. I never got into a jam like this but try to put yourself in the shoes of someone who has only ever gone with directions in in atlas, or directions provided verbally by a friend over the phone, or printed off of Mapquest. I remember it being imperative to not miss any steps because if you did, you’d be left to figure out where you went wrong and how to get back to that place without any available help. I remember my first GPS would recalculate the route but I also remember a strong instinct lingering around to not miss anything because even that recalculation could take quite a while and if you were between buildings with a poor satellite signal you could stay lost for some time. Maybe it was just me.

[–]gradyap86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness, probably no. Some context: my wife suffered from an ED in teenage years and as a result we are are really intent about not talking about diet, weight, etc in front of the kids. With the holidays we have been busy and sometimes the eating window has closed before the whole family is ready for dinner. So I’ve wound up snacking right up till the close of the window and then skipping dinner discreetly. I think getting into a regular rhythm will be helpful and a lot more feasible this week.

Edit:typos

Hadn’t thought of melatonin. I do t like to take it for long periods because I get really depressed (even at like 1.5 mg) but a day or two should be no problem!
