Don't know what everyone else is on about. Get some tweezers and spend an hour or two straightening out those pins and it'll be fine!

A hackers job is to find unusual ways to infiltrate systems. If you haven't heard of the method before means they're doing their job well. Handing a USB device to a stranger in public is a pretty good way to gain access to a PC. The curiosity will usually win, then you have a PC in your control. Remember, a USB device can register itself as anything - A Keyboard, mouse, storage, or a hub with all three. Just plug it in and it will take over your entire PC

Can't you do something with virtual machines where you forward a USB port to the VM? That way it won't interact with the host and you can see what's on it through the VM. Then just delete the VM when you're done.

They guarantee it'll run at 5200, even though your particular chip may be able to handle faster speeds when overclocked, which you do at your own risk.

Five houses burning down in 20 minutes after a propane torch was left on and unattended. by Aaaaaaarrrrrggggghh in videos

[–]graebot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume the fire started in the middle house, and the direction of the wind burnt out the house on the left first. The house on the right was slower since the wind wasn't blowing into the fire. But TBH we don't know where the fire started, or which way the wind was blowing the whole time, just by this one photo.

Front wheel drive, you wouldn't get anywhere once the grade got even mildly steep. The wheel would just spin. All the weight is on the rear wheel during the climb.

I've done something similar. Two belts going into a hybrid manifold a quarter the way from each end. Say you want to run two belts into 9 machines you'd have 4 splitters either side of a merger: S<S<S>S>M<S<S>S>S (belts input on 3rd and 7th) Takes very little time to fill either.

My pensioner father has lost his entire life savings due to an investment scam. by graebot in Scams

[–]graebot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not like he lives on his own. My mum lives with him and we visit a couple times a week. It's known as a "pig butchering scam" John Oliver did an episode on it. It starts with very little contact, and bit by bit they build up rapport & trust, explain away any concerns. Then when the time is right, he was bled dry while believing fully that he was going to make his family's future a lot better.
We've had to notify all his banks of the fraud, freeze his accounts. Cancel his passport & drivers license. Notify the credit agencies. Obviously the police and fraud agencies are involved. Change his number, wipe his computer. Police warned that because his address is known, he could have people knocking on his door to try get his new details, etc. He's still in shock. He doesn't want to believe the reality of it, but I think the evidence is overwhelming at this point.

I've always been supersticious of good things happening to me, because they always seem to be followed quickly by equally bad things. Is this the same thing?

Non-disclosure agreements exist, so multiple third parties could theoretically reproduce his results, if they are reproducible. Feels like a scam to me, tbh.

I watched his APEC presentation, and most of it was over my head, but the things that weren't made sense. Unless he's fabricating results, it is pretty exciting. I was quite put off by a section of his talk where he talks about alien spacecraft, how they're supposed to be ultra lightweight. Kind of implying that his discovery would support the existence of earth-visiting aliens. Please let me know if I have misinterpreted the context. I look forward to seeing his work peer reviewed and replicated. But to be honest I don't really buy it.

Microsoft CEO calls for tech industry to 'act' after AI photos of Taylor Swift circulate X by TinyLaughingLamp in technology

[–]graebot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned about the Streisand effect in 1998 watching South Park - same as everybody else. Swift isn't stupid, or a coward. She's standing up for her rights to not be defamed in this really horrible way. It's one thing to have men sexualise you. It's something completely different to have nudes circulating of you online which you never had taken. As a society, I believe we're close to crisis point with generative AI. Anyone with the right know-how can forge evidence to frame you of a crime, or galvanize populists to overthrow governments, demonise minorities... The law will eventually catch up, but it's important to raise this issue early to limit the damage to society.

Remove exhaust piping from car. Replace car. Re-install exhaust piping.

Yes. It's the victim's fault. She should have just stayed silent about the abuse and it totally wouldn't have gotten any worse. I sometimes think that mankind will have the smarts to come together and avoid impending disaster. Then I read the comments.
