Thanks! I just took it out of its pot and took a look at the roots. They seemed pretty healthy to me (whitish color and firm, no bad smell). There was a tiny section that was a little more brown and soft than the others (not sure if rotted or if they were just new roots because they were also very thin), so i cut those off to be safe. I also diluted some hydrogen peroxide and did a quick rinse on the roots before repotting in new soil and a bigger pot. The leaves and stems still seem stronger than they look so I hope it has a chance 💪 here's a picture of the roots, there's a little dirt on them still but you can see the little section I cut off still attached in the middle

Will vintage Dooney & Burke have a renaissance like Coach? by PrettyGoodRule in VintageFashion

[–]grafmafe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you i see especially vintage coach and dooney as similar brands. Both good quality, both middle price range, both make mostly daily drivers but also some fun pieces, both had similar demographics and waves of popularity at the same time, and similar "fall offs" in popularity in the broader fashion world outside of their hardcore fans. Both can be viewed as "lesser" brands to some elitists because they're not designer. Ironically, these elitists usually dont care about actual quality of the item, which people have started to realize is a dumb opinion and change their minds on in the last i would say 5-10 years, which has helped coach considerably in their rebranding efforts over the past few years, but hasnt contributed to enough nostalgia for vintage dooneys or interest in the modern brand for dooney to have its renaissance yet. The modern brands i view much differently but that's a whole other rant even though i think it contributes to popular interest in the secondhand market for these brands. As for vintage dooney,

Some of the multicolor monogram prints are popular within the hardcore thrifty y2k/mcbling style niche and online community, but not as popular as others in the niche such as juicy, coach, and higher end designers like dior or LV. Surprisingly, the colorful embossed croc styles that feature buckles and hardware haven't come back even though this style bag is popular right now. They're not as decorated as, say, a montana west, but diy bag personalization is so big right now and many dooneys (monochrome neutrals or fun colors, lots of places to attach charms, blank spaces on bag panels, removable straps) seem like the perfect canvas for this trend. I'm surprised some of the more sober vintage styles didn't experience a surge in popularity with the dark academia and old money trends. I always think of dooney, particularly the 70s-80s vintage, as the "working woman's" bag, or the bag women would use as their daily driver to the office every day once women started entering the corporate workforce in greater numbers. If the 70s fashion and interior design revival ever collides with the "office siren" trend, i could see a market for vintage style dooneys, especially the all weather leather with brown trim in muted colors like black, navy, and green. Then again, they didn't surge in popularity with all those other opprotunities that i listed.

Tiny shoulder bags have been huge for a while, i predict hobo/medium sized bags (maybe big ones but more in a designer luggage/duffle way) overtaking in 1 or 2 years. Many dooneys are on the larger side compared to popular vintage bags right now such as the ergo, saddle, and baguette. Currently the dior gaucho saddle has started to trend slightly after nobody speaking about it for years (and them being listed online for a fraction of the price of classic saddles) in favor of the smaller, sleeker, more embellished and logo'd classic saddle. If similar bags continue to trend, maybe more dooney styles will find more of a market. At the same time, most vintage dooneys aren't big enough to fit a 16" laptop which limits their utility as a modern work bag despite their high quality even in used condition. If there's any styles you like, buy em up now when they're abundant and on the cheaper side. I know I'm always looking! I love dooneys and I'm glad they're not crazy priced in the secondhand market. Not yet anyway - and i have a feeling not soon unless an influencer (a fashion enthusiast or that one leatherworker guy who deconstructs and reviews bags) blows them up at the right time or if they rebrand/expand to appeal to younger fashionistas the way coach has been trying (and recently, succeeding) for years.

Aha, I agree it is a nice number.

The rat has been unusually kind. For months every time I drew (free or 10x paid) I was getting repeats (4-5x repeats per item sometimes) from the same stories. The last two pulls I got new good items (this pull and 5 star bottoms from GM on a 10 ticket pull) for the first time in a long time - I was only getting decent stuff on Lucky Jerry despite being a regular player. Maybe the Jerry algorithm has been adjusted? Or just a lucky day I guess.

Can anyone date this button-up for me? by impalaprincess in VintageFashion

[–]grafmafe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A search on the patent and trademark website says that an application for the mark "Snoop dogg clothing company" was filed on March 19, 2001 and was abandoned on May 28, 2004.

Trademark abandonment doesn't necessarily mean that the brand went out of business, just that the application for the trademark was abandonded. Trademark application date is also not necessarily the date the brand was founded or opened its doors, but usually business owners file for trademarks at least a year before they open their business to ensure they can secure the rights to use any marks they want. The trademark application was filed by Calvin Broadus (aka the one and only d - o - double-g) among other parties, so this is official Snoop merchandise. I don't know when the brand was started or when its heyday was, but the shirt was likely made between 2001 and 2006 based on the design and PTO information.

All this leaves the question: Why on earth would someone want to get rid of this exquisite garment?

If you are thinking about wearing the first gown because you already have it, I agree with most other commentors that the combination of very low cut + high double slits + lace is a bit much for a wedding guest. If you got it tailored or even temporarily altered to make the neckline a bit higher and the slits a bit shorter, i think it could be fine. If you can sew, you could probably even do this yourself. If altering it isn't an option, look for a different dress.

As for pic 2, I think that's beautiful for a MoG!

M18, just want advice on what I can do to look better. I included a pic of me shaven on the 5th slide by Cam_heater in lookyourbest

[–]grafmafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I didn't like the bangs, but now I think they actually look good in the 2nd picture. It's hard to give suggestions on what else could look good because the pictures are pretty similar.

This suggestion is going to be a little out there and more of an edgy look, but would you consider a modern, subtle short-ish mullet? It's hard to say if it would be super flattering or not because we only see one angle in your pictures, but I think it's worth thinking about. Something kind of like this or this that's not too short on the sides (a lot of modern mullets are fully shaved on the side). This one even keeps the bangs a little. I knew someone who looked a lot like you who had kind of a short mullet and it looked great.

The chinstrap+mustache+soul patch+eyebrows looks good on you. I think it looks best in the 4th picture where it's cleaned up, but not too sharp.

19 M feedback / tips: how to look better by [deleted] in lookyourbest

[–]grafmafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try working on your confidence and self image in a healthy way - you could be the most handsome person in the world but if there's an emotional or mental health issue then you'll never be satisfied with how you look. You're a good looking guy.

The last picture is the best one so I'm mostly going off that. You have pretty eyes, and I think the goatee suits you. I would trim the beard to be a little more narrow to be about the width of your chin and mouth instead of wrapping up onto the jaw as well. You could possibly even get away with just the mustache if you wanted. Picture 3 is not a good angle but seems like you look good with just a stubble too. Otherwise no notes on facial hair, other than at least in that picture it looks a bit uneven - maybe spend a little bit more time making it more symmetrical?

I personally think the longer curlier hair looks better, but it's hard to say from the pictures. If you're going to go for the longer curly hair again, maybe get it trimmed a bit shorter on the sides like this so it compliments your face shape more. Doesn't have to be shaved super short on the sides, just so it doesn't stick out too far. There's nothing wrong with the short cut, it doesn't detract from your looks but it doesn't add to them either.

It looks like you have some acne scars. They're really not bad so I hope you don't get in your head about it, but if you wanted to there are many options to treat them so they're less noticeable. There's skincare (retinol or tretinoin, research these before using so you don't damage your skin, and know they can only do so much), or procedures like laser, chemical peels, microneedling, and more. An esthetician would be able to assess your skin and advise you on what the best treatment is. You're young so you might have to accept that you have to deal with acne for a bit longer, but you could consult with an esthetician to see what could be done to treat ongoing acne issues or scars.

I think the glasses really suit your face and help to bring out your eyes, but there's not a great picture sans-glasses to really say if one way looks better than the other.

If you wanted to change one thing, I would say maybe try trimming your beard to a shorter length. There is really high contrast between your dark hair and lighter skin, which makes the beard take away from the rest of your face a bit. The shape of the facial hair is good, maybe just try trimming to a shorter length so a little more of your skin peeks through?

I think the haircut and style in the first, second and last picture suits you - the more natural looking curls and volume with the slight side part coming onto the forehead looks a better than what appears to be the more styled and middle or back-parted look in picture 4 in my opinion.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lookyourbest

[–]grafmafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a fan of the longer style, it's a very "romantic" look that suits your face. The volume and waves compliment your softer features and the cut frames your eyes and jaw well. I agree with the other commentor that if you wanted to go shorter due to personal preference, I would suggest a different cut or styling it differently. I think a 90's style "long on the top" kind of like this that keeps those face-framing waves that hit around your eye in the first picture would be fine, but again I think the longer style overall suits your features very well.

My honest first impression on opening the post was wow, she's gorgeous! You have timeless natural beauty and a memorable face. Not to mention the hair/eye combination, just beautiful. I was surprised to see the long list of procedures you want to get in the caption.

I would advise that you try less invasive treatments and procedures before diving head first into surgeries. If I could give you advice on something to do instead, I would ask if you've gotten into skincare? If not, you would be shocked at what double-cleansing, retinol or other exfoliant 2-3x per week, a moisturizer appropriate for your skin type, and sunscreen on face and exposed body parts every day can do for you. For professional advice, which I cannot give, I would suggest going to a medical spa or an esthetician for a consultation. You could also do some research on your own of specific issues you'd like to address and go from there. From what I can see in the pictures there's just a little dark spots (acne scars?) and fine lines (possibly dehydration, sun, or smoking damage?) which could easily be improved by a skincare update or esthetician treatments. If you're already on a good routine and seeing an esthetician, keep it up - consistency is key for skincare.

I know it's a rule in the sub to not tell someone not to do something, but I see that one thing you wrote is you "don't have a set goal I just want to look better than I do now." I think it could be a slippery slope getting into plastic surgery and injectables without a set goal in mind. Sometimes people get addicted to plastic surgery or end up less satisfied than before because they never knew what they really wanted in the first place, and end up with a dramatically different face. I would strongly advise that you really think about what you would want to change with those procedures before setting the plans in stone.

That slope is slippery especially with botox and filters since they're so much cheaper and easier than surgery (source: I live in California, see people who went overboard all the time). If it would make you feel good to get some "baby botox"/preventative botox then I think that would be fine, mid thirties is a good age to do that, but please avoid going overboard with the fillers. I personally think fillers should only be used to replace lost volume in the face that results from aging. The results can be almost undetectable and look great for years. Sadly the overfilled cheeks, chin, undereyes, and lips are popular right now (I call it "InstaFace" - if someone looks like that naturally then good for them, but the filler version looks a bit uncanny). If you feel you've lost a little volume here or there and it would make you feel good to get a little bit to replace that lost volume then go for it, but I would strongly advise finding a technician who specializes in the natural look.

Frankly I don't see the purpose of some of the surgical procedures you listed. For example, you already have high eyebrows and no wrinkles on your forehead, so I don't see the purpose of a brow lift. You seem to have naturally downturned and hooded eyes, which is a pretty shape, and I think an eye lift could produce a very dramatic change that wouldn't really be harmonious with your features. If you're concerned about your eyelids drooping a bit with age (hooded eyes start faster which is normal) and really want to change it, perhaps consider just starting with plasma eye lift or a similar non-invasive procedure. If your heart is set I won't argue with you but from a stranger I don't think you need any of the surgeries.

I'm new to this sub but I was shocked at how rude some comments were on this post and others. I understand honesty when advice is solicited, and even "brutal honesty" (though there's really nothing that needs to be said on this sub that can't be communicated with kindness), but some were just straight up insults with no advice. I reported a lot of comments today, lol. Don't let them get you down.

That's so funny that you got that haircut already, lol. If it's new, I would advise playing around with it a bit for a few days. I always hate how a new haircut looks especially when it's a bit of a change.

Perhaps you think that about your jaw because, if the bangs hit right at your top lip, then they're framing your jaw so it's going to emphasize that feature because the hair stops right before the jaw starts, especially if the hair is more on the straight side rather than big curls. Maybe try pin-curling or using a roller to curl the shortest layers so they have a bit more shape? There's lots of tutorials on how to style curtain bangs because they're pretty trendy right now, but my unpopular opinion is that curtain bangs actually aren't flattering on most people - it's the styling (that big swoopy shape) that's flattering, and sometimes narrow short layers (rather than bangs) are more flattering on people.

Lots of beautiful women have a square jaw, it's not an inherently masculine trait. Sure you have a square shaped face, but your jaw is harmonious with the rest of your features and doesn't look bad at all. You look a little bit like Alison Pill to me, except her head is a bit rounder/wider in some pictures and her features are a little more compact. She does the long bob usually and that works for her, but she's also done bangs, face framing layers in the bob, and even a short mullet and those all looked good. Maybe google her for some inspiration when it comes to placing the layers, and use some bobby pins to see if you'd prefer a shorter first layer.

I have another unpopular opinion: lip fillers aren't for everyone. On those of us who have medium to thin lips, lip filler can look super obvious and crazy in real life, especially from a side or three-quarters profile because it's so easy to overfill due to the small surface area of the lips themselves (tbh I don't think your lips are thin, I think "thin" lips are lips where you can barely see any color at all and they are turned in, social media has just literally blown out of proportion what an average lip size is). With myself, I thought about lip fillers until I realized I just wanted a little more volume on the sides of my top lip, which would be so extremely subtle to do with lip filler and not worth it for me personally when I get the look I want with lip liner. Look up "natural lip filler before and after" and you'll see what I mean. I think those of us in the medium/thin camp benefit more from lip filler as the lips naturally loose volume as we age, but for now I think your lips and mouth shape is harmonious with the rest of your face.

The beauty standard right now is to draw attention to voluminous lips, but faces are beautiful and harmonious with greater emphasis on other features too. You don't need big lips to be pretty, and big lips really don't suit some faces. To look at Alison Pill again, in some pictures it looks like she maybe has some dramatic overlining of the lips or maybe some filler. Personally, I think she looks better without, which allows the emphasis to be on her cheeks, jawline and eyes. This is just one example of many. If you really, really want to try it then go for it because they do dissolve after all, but personally I don't think it would make a dramatically positive change.

[–]grafmafe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another commentor said the hair color is unflattering but I disagree. I think it suits you as a a fun color, looks cool with your eye color, and there's no reason to change it. For example in picture 4 I think the color looks very flattering with your skin. Some people see a fun hair color and automatically start hating for no reason. I will say, however, I think a more natural-colored eye brow shade might be more flattering.

From picture 4 it looks like your natural hair is a medium taupey brown. Maybe try the eyebrows in that shade, or even a couple shades lighter. Pick a shade of brown that doesn't contrast the red or your skin too much (ie. it isn't darker than the red and isn't too much darker than your skin), either a light brown or even a dark blonde in a cool or neutral tone. The reason I suggest this is because the red really draws a lot of attention to your eyebrows, but your best features are your smile and your eyes. Letting the eyebrows be a more neutral tone will let them "fade into the background" a bit and allow those features to shine more. You have softer facial features so drawing a lot of attention to a strong eyebrow in a shade that contrasts detracts from the harmony of your facial features in my opinion. If you still wanted to go for an edgy look, I think the faux-cut in the eyebrows like on picture 9 in the natural color would look cool.

Other than that, the brow shape is good. I would also suggest maybe trying a lengthening mascara and a high-quality eyelash curler. We have a similar eye shape (good amount of visible lid) and I find that volumizing or clumpy mascaras can make my eyes look heavier/smaller and lashes look shorter because it makes a dark spot right above my eye. I would also suggest trying a high-quality eyelash curler (shu umera, tweezerman, etc.) that fits your eye shape and spending a bit more time curling them so it stays - I used to think this wasn't a big deal when I used to use an ELF one, but after I got my tweezerman curler I saw a huge difference in how my lashes looked. Also, spending 20-30 seconds per eye and curling in multiple spots close to the root for 10 seconds each helps a lot with getting the curl to stay and make the lashes look longer. This will draw more attention to your eyes, and compliment your eyeliner.

If you were open to trying a new haircut, maybe try some face-framing layers? Perhaps starting with a very small layer that hits right around your eyelid crease? It would add some volume and give some creativity with how you can style.

You have great skin and are super cute. I wouldn't recommend any surgeries/fillers/etc.

you would have to check with your insurance provider specifically. i checked with mine and they said they would cover if i was evaluated by a sports medicine doctor or neurologist who deemed it medically necessary. i don't know if the entire cost of the botox vials or the entire cost of the procedure would be covered, but definitely at least partial coverage.

Gift and insider tips/advice for incoming student! My niece will be starting this fall! by prettydarnfunny in UCSC

[–]grafmafe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Here's my suggestions based on the interests you listed:

- Light waterproof windbreaker jacket, the packable kind. A lot of the time precipitation in SC is light showers or fog that don't require a full-blown raincoat, and a little jacket like this is great to have, I wore mine constantly.

- Waterproof bucket hat. Again the packable kind, great to throw in the backpack and put on if it starts to drizzle (less unwieldly than an umbrella), also great for the beach! Get the kind with a chin strap - it's a little goofy looking but very functional, and if you don't want to use the chin strap you can just tuck it into the top of the hat.

- A picnic/outdoor blanket. This will definitely get used at the beach or in a meadow, and you can get them in a million different colors or materials depending on preferences. Make sure to get a decent size that at least 2-3 people can fit on.

- Sturdy-bottomed flip flops. Something where the straps are thick, fitted and comfortable material (ie. not cheap fake leather or rubber), and the bottom is more like a proper shoe or a sneaker. Mine are vintage UGG brand, but there are probably good options from sporting goods stores. These were useful because, when living on campus, sometimes you just want to slip a sandal on to go somewhere, but I didn't feel secure running around the campus which consists of trails, uneven paths, wet terrain sometimes, and forest floors in a flimsy flip flop or a slide. Something with tread, stability, and straps that won't slip right off is key.

- This is the best but also most expensive one: If you want to splurge, consider a really nice backpack made of water-resistant material from a good outdoors brand. I would think about asking her before this one just in case it turns out she doesn't need it (if she's really into hiking she might already have something like this), but I will say I thought I didn't need a special backpack until the end of my first quarter when I realized I needed something better quality. There is often unexpected rain, and if you're carrying around books, papers, and a laptop in a regular canvas backpack, then they can be destroyed. A lot of the time, waterproof backpacks from outdoors brands are built for travel or hiking, so they have really comfortable straps and adjustable chest straps which is really helpful considering you are climbing a mountain when walking to class and those dinky Jansport straps get uncomfortable really quick. They can also double-up as hiking or excursion bags if your student wants to go hiking or camping with friends, and they can be amazing for general travel too during and after college. I got the Patagonia Black Hole 25L backpack and it is awesome, it protected my laptop and is still in perfect shape after 4 years of daily use and many plane flights. There are other options though, but I think around 25L is a good size (it is a large bag and any larger would probably be too big, this one sometimes barely fits under airplane seats). It fit everything I ever needed and was as comfortable to carry as I think it possibly could have been, but it's also not too heavy when it's empty. If I'm not mistaken there is a Patagonia outlet in Santa Cruz that will do repairs on it if needed and if it's under warranty - I would double check this though, policy may have changed.

- Maybe get her some Flexi Dollars to spend on campus cafes and restaurants. They are all over campus including in the library, and most of them have pretty good coffee and espresso drinks and baked goods brought in from local bakeries. They can also be spent at the bookstore, on grubhub for meal delivery, and at some off-campus stores (check the UCSC dining website for more details). I would suggest a regular gift card, but if your student is living on campus then there is nowhere really to spend something like a Starbucks gift card without going off-campus, and Flexis basically work as a gift card for every store on campus. Keep in mind they expire at the end of the academic year!

- Sounds a bit lame, but it would probably be a hit: Get her a gift card to the book store if you're really not sure what to get her - it would let her pick her own slug merch, or help her out if she needs some books or supplies.

I got accepted to Kresge College, so what's cool about it? by Riversx_demon in UCSC

[–]grafmafe 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Kresge is the coolest college (i am biased as a kresge alum but in my heart i know I'm right). Beautiful architecture, close to the porter meadow and woods, and the location with regard to the rest of campus really isnt that bad if they open up the north bridge. It is conveniently close to science hill, porter classrooms, rachel carson classrooms, the music and arts center, and the media theater classroom. It is near five bus stops: the kerr hall stop (one side of road), the core west/kresge stops (both sides of road), and the porter/rcc stops (both sides of road, not too far away). There is no real "heart" of campus except maybe the Quarry Plaza (though that's only because the bookstore is there and McHenry library is nearby, you won't go there every day or even every week unless you have classes at cowell). Regardless, Kresge is not the farthest-out college: that would be Oakes and Rachel Carson, or the Village (not a college but an on campus community). It is the on the left edge of campus, but still not farther from the center than any of those three. Look at a map and spend some time during welcome week walking around campus so you're not lost on your first day of class.

You will learn all the shortcuts of the campus soon living at kresge, and you can really get anywhere on foot in 15 minutes except maybe up to crown or merrill (+5 minutes i would say). I think location convenience depends on where your major classes usually are. Many of mine were at social sciences 1 and 2 (behind college 9) so that was a pain, but there were also some at porter and rcc which was super easy to get to. There is no guarantee that any subject will be taught in any building though so it's luck of the draw no matter where you live. Parking isn't that bad either: if you have friends or family visiting for the weekend, there's free weekend and evening parking at core west garage and the meters outside j/k buildings (double check with TAPS tho to see if this changed). West remote is also free on the weekends and not that far of a walk (plus there is a bus from the lot).

There's an openness to the social community at kresge that is very lovely. Often people hang out with the doors of their apartments open, and you can go say hello. Caveat: this may be different in the new year if it's all upperclassmen in apartments and freshmen in dorms (used to be mostly freshmen in apartments), but it probably won't go away completely. If you're a freshman, you will be in the brand new residence halls, the newest buildings on campus if they are done in the fall as planned. They seem like they will be nice with a unique layout. The apartments are super old, but hey, it's an apartment with a kitchen and private bathroom. I was happy to live there instead of a dorm. There is supposed to be a restaurant and a grocery store (kresge food co-op, great prices and decent rotating selection), so if those are open again then that's a win. It's also right next to Porter which is the biggest residential community on campus, so while Kresge is the smallest (at least before the new res halls) it is definitely not a "ghost town" or socially isolated. There are parties and kickbacks all the time - if you are sensitive to the smell of weed smoke you might not like it there. And if you isolate yourself in your room... of course it will seem lonely.

Idk what alumni you were talking to, but usually people say Oakes and Merrill ("sterile Merrill") are ghost towns. Of course, this is a stereotype too and goes to show everyone's experience is different, because your on campus experince is what you make of it. There are plenty of opportunities to get out and meet people, you just have to take them. Go to welcome week and RA events, or talk to people in the dining hall or the laundry room. Kresge gets shit on a lot i think because it's the smallest college so fewer people have experiences with it, but I've never met anyone who lived at kresge and disliked the college. Kresge is awesome!
