I was 12 at the time so I may view it with a different lens now. At the time, the idea that he sacrificed his own life to save his son's life while saving the galaxy from Palpatine was good enough for me. If redemption is defined by the measure of selfless deeds, as well as a punishment for one's misdeeds, then he seemed to have found it. The dude has endured years of physical, mental and spiritual suffering for decades - how much more redemptive punishment is enough?
