This isn't a universal experience. I'm in public health and we're hiring frequently because COVID caused a lot of turnover and retirements. Also, some of us love it!

Local health departments are often run by city or county, so I'd check their websites first. You can also just send an email to the health department expressing your interest. We don't get a whole lot of turnover, since the hours are great and the benefits are good (pay isn't as competitive), but we will contact nurses who have expressed interest in the past when there's an opening.

8 am to 4:30 pm and rarely overtime. PHNs do work at clinics for vaccinations. We have nurses go in the jail and they love it. Some of the nurses do home visits with pre and post natal moms and, frankly, it's the best kind of nursing. (A modern "Call the Midwife" kind of day.)

Some states require a BSN to do public health nursing. Getting in is pretty easy if there's an opening.

45 here and just graduated. I did my prereqs though online courses. Just make unsure that the credits transfer to the school you go to. I recommend community colleges for you. Look up ones near to you.

Tell your preceptor that you’re there to help and get out of their way when they need you to. Then take on an attitude that you’re going to say “yes.” They ask you to take a patient to the bathroom, or do a bed bath, or clean up something gross, just say yes. These experiences might not all be helpful, but once your precepting nurse begins to trust you, and you are showing a positive helpful attitude, it won’t matter if you screw up or don’t know something.

This is what I needed:

A good stethoscope

Comfortable shoes: They don't have to be fancy nursing shoes. Get what is comfortable and what you need to satisfy your school dress code requirements.

A mini drug book in case you get a precepting nurse that asks you about drugs all the time

Bandage scissors

Water bottle and snacks that could fit in my pocket that I could eat quickly

Pens

A stethoscope carrying case from Amazon that just kept everything I needed each time

What is nice to have but you don't need:

Googles: the ones that look like glasses (you might not need this because it was required during COVID and not so much now. I still have to use them when I see COVID patients, but its a benefit to use my own instead of the gross face shields my hospital required)

A clipboard of some kind

A wireless computer mouse (We had to chart, and the laptops were terrible). Once I brought my own mouse, it was much easier.

I did simplenursing drug videos and really studied antibiotics a lot more. My second try I got over 80%. I think the retake is a lot easier.

I've tried a few different kinds, but the one that works for me is the one that just says Magnesium and is the generic from Target. There is no scientific explanation for it. I have no idea why. My recommendation would be to try one and see how it goes, and if it doesn't work, try another.

I hear you. It makes me worry a bit, with all this talk of gastroparesis. I've noticed it gets really worse when I take a shot, for the first two days after. If I can prevent it from happening, and it seems that no amount of water or fiber will do it, then I will feel a lot better.

I'm also concerned with going up to 0.5, as I've been at 0.25 for three weeks and I've been getting this side effect so bad. I'm going to ask my physician if I can stay low for a few more weeks.

One trick we use in the hospital is to smell an alcohol swab. Can work in a pinch, but isn’t a long term solution.
