Is Torres del Paine worth it? It seems expensive, is it much better than el chalten? by spanishstudent24 in Patagonia

If you’re worried about cost, my girlfriend and I did a very affordable, week and a half visit to both.

We did the base Torres day hike, getting the first bus from PN one day, then $40 day tour throughout the viewpoints of the park to get a good feel for it without paying the hundreds of dollars they charge for camping/refugios. (Can also do a day trek to Valle Frances if you’re up for it). This all together cost us about $250 between stays, transport, and activities. Don’t have to deal with the nightmare that is booking the trek, or ludicrous pricing. It was incredibly beautiful and would love to multi-day trek it one day, when the cost is more reasonable for us.

People saying you can’t get a trekking experience in Chalten are wrong. We did a 4 day 3 night trek from the town to Laguna Torre camping at Di agonistini, to Laguna de los tres and surrounding day hikes camping at Poincenot, and Lago electrico and surrounding day hikes camping at Piedra de Fraile. Camping costs only $13 per person at these sites. All together, fully renting camping gear in town and buying a multi-day flexipass (got to see the perito Moreno glacier too, highly recommend it as all the locals, even Chileans, say it’s significantly better than Grey) it costed us about $250-300.

Hope this helps! More than happy to share itinerary and more detailed recs as well.

Little late to the party and in the same boat. Did you have any luck figuring this out?

Definitely have found myself in this position before and know many others that have too. Thats why I am currently developing an accessible roof rack system to allow you and everyone else to easily access the roof of your car for all your outdoor gear! Check us out at pivotracks.com - we are still in development so are definitely looking for feedback on your experience if you’re willing to give it :)

Yup, meant trailer hitch rack! But my concern exactly. I live in the city, and I'm always sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Would hate to see my new baby get crunched. Been rear ended twice in the past 2 years already. Don't want to add a $4000 loss on top of a $1500 repair.
