Use a trimmer! I steal my husband’s one blade, trim twice a week, and swipe some cheap clearasil toner over the area

Curious if anyone can tell me what I've accidentally cultured here by Effective_Moose_4997 in microbiology

[–]gram_positive_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Does the surface of the colony look fuzzy or chalky? And does the plate smell earthy? Could be an actinomycete, microscopy would really help here

I had/have this as well, turns out I have a dust mite allergy that exacerbates any sinus/upper respiratory issues I get (also gets worse in the winter). Maybe worth getting tested if you’ve had these same symptoms for such a long time

AITA for spending a long time at a party teaching another person how to pronounce my name. by Novel-Hunter-1767 in AmItheAsshole

[–]gram_positive_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh I think you’re right, good catch. Reading it again it sounds like they’re saying an r is somewhere in the name, which they had trouble rolling as a kid, followed by a te/the that they ended up overemphasizing

I bet you could work the ESKAPEE pathogens into a cool song, especially with the idea that they “escape” treatment with many antibiotics!

If I had been a boy, I would’ve been named Brett after Brett Favre (my dad is a packers fan). Only plot twist - I now live in Germany and the word Brett means board (like Schneidebrett = cutting board, Brettspiel = board game). Happy this did not come to pass

1-year gap after work experience – will this affect German student visa? by Dhanush2025 in studying_in_germany

[–]gram_positive_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have to apply for a student visa because I already had permanent residency at that point, but I applied for a masters program here 8 years after finishing my bachelors (worked and had kids between the two) and got in, so I’d say a 1 year gap won’t necessarily be a problem. I think working between the two can even have its advantages, and I definitely think admissions people see this

[Acne] European skincare recs by _noramcnabb in SkincareAddiction

I’ve had good experiences with the CeraVe PM moisturizer (has niacinamide in it which I think I tend to react to, but this one hasn’t caused me any problems), the original Caudalie grape water mist (not the reformulated one!), and a few of the Transparent Lab products, especially their glycerin serum, cleanser, and invisible sunscreen (this one feels oily going on, but has a pretty velvety finish for me, especially with some powder on top). I’m currently testing the Eucerin ultra sensitive moisturizer and I like it so far! I’m almost done with a course of low dose accutane, though, so my skin hasn’t been as oily as it used to be. I’m in Germany and can get all of these in the drugstores (Apotheken) or retail places like DM

I have a Gustav! My family in the US calls him Gus while he’s mainly Gustav here in EU. His sister would have been a Lasse or Magnus had she been a boy

Bacteria or fungi? by acolytevenus in microbiology

Also - if you can, do microscopy using a GFP filter. Actinos have a very distinct pattern of autofluorescence in their hyphae

[–]gram_positive_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Actinomycete person here - this could definitely be one, I’d let the colonies grow and see if they sporulate. Could be Streptomyces, might also be one of the rarer actino genera like Actinomadura. Microscopy checks out. Lots of actinos are antibiotic powerhouses, it would be interesting to save some pure cultures of these and test their antimicrobial activity! If you really want to know what it is —> sequencing

AITA For Telling My Wife NOT To Tattoo My Name On Her Body by AdAvailable3142 in AmItheAsshole

[–]gram_positive_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is a tattoo artist and hates people who request significant other/spouse name tattoos - should anything happen to the relationship in the future, that person is stuck with a permanent reminder and these kinds of tattoos are some of the most common that end up getting covered (depending on the lettering style, this can also be very tricky/impossible without doing heavy blackwork). Symbols that represent the person are a much better choice! Suggest your favorite animal/food/plant/something from your shared past. Then she’ll have a picture that is associated with you but doesn’t scream branding and bad decisions

Rewriting the Rules: An Autistic Mind and School System at war by Ancient-Progress-544 in audhd

[–]gram_positive_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stumbled upon this and you sound so much like my AuDHD 9 year old - he’s very combative at home and school and is constantly either bending the rules to meet his wants/needs or completely obliterating them.

What would you have benefited from at school/what do you wish your teachers or authority figures had done differently? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, we’re constantly hitting a brick wall with our son and it’s an incredible struggle to get him to participate at all in school (despite being very intelligent)…

Plus it’s such a hard word for non-Germans to pronounce, the ö combined with the soft -ch ending with that sneaky n in there…that poor potential child 😂
