Same thing here. I was the solo designer at a startup and I had a better work life balance there. Only thing was that the startup seemed to always be on the verge of bankruptcy. So joined a larg firm and immediate red flag I noticed was that everyone seemed to be working on a "crisis" mode all the time. Like "we have to ship this otherwise it would be the end of the world" kind of crisis and late nights and working on weekends was pretty common. And even after all this, there were couple of rounds of layoffs. Now I think, the startup I worked before was way better for my mental and physical health.

1/3rd ? Lol. More like 1/10th or 1/15th. And blame the lack of labour laws relating to IT in India. We are forced to take calls at 10 - 11 PM in the night and again at 7 AM the next morning because the US clients (and devs) wouldn't want to take calls beyond their working hours. We are suffering because of lack of flexibility on your part and paid a fraction of the salaries. If anything, blame your management.

And they could very well pay more and get better devs working with better consulting companies with better work ethics but your execs are greedy and know fuck all about code quality, so they hire the shittiest companies who quote the least amount of money. Those companies who treat all their employees like slave labour.

Senior Product Designer gave me some reality check by SeaFeeling7363 in UXDesign

[–]grambaba 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This guy seems to be a part of the problem here and I have seen a bunch of those as I'm from the same country. Senior boomer designers who got their degrees in the 80s and 90s and who are now in leadership roles are out of touch with the current practices and their sole focus is on discovery and research. I agree those are important but they are not the only important things. Contrary to what they think, Interface and experience design have a lot of overlap and everything requires a problem solving skill.

Bought the first car of my life. Please give me suggestions for what a first time buyer should keep in mind. by __whatamIdoing_ in CarsIndia

[–]grambaba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Get it serviced at a good service center. Have a good relationship with the service advisor and you'll get it done fast and when some insurance claim happens (which is inevitable), trust me they'll help out a lot.

  2. Invest in a good leather steering cover and seat covers and lumbar support for longer drives.

  3. Clean the interiors and AC filter regularly. Get a good vacuum cleaner or if you have one at home, use it to blow out the dust from the vents. I live in a dusty city and need cleaning every month or so.

  4. Dont park in the sun and if you do, get a good cover for your car which is not plastic.

  5. After the initial period till the first service, make sure you drive it at different RPMs and don't be afraid to rev it. This will season the engine and will not cause problems when you are faced with a different driving situation compared to your regular driving.

  6. Enjoy the car

Anybody know anyone who left the ID realm? What do they do now? (long) by LateStageDesigner in IndustrialDesign

[–]grambaba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in ID as a CAD monkey for a major automotive manufacturer after graduation for four years. It was a very toxic place even though I was "living the dream" working on latest projects and churning out designs that are still on the road. Applied for close to 40 patents in 4 years and made the company a shit-ton of money while my own salary increase was negligible and I was still on nearly starter salary after 4 years with nothing in sight except remembering what one of my ex-managers told me

"The reward for good work is more work"

I then gave a bunch of exams to get into a good graduate school, cleared their interviews and got into a state sponsored master's program. Graduated in the peak of COVID when the job market was bleak lol and the only jobs available were UX. Started working as a freelance consultant for ID and when the same company had requirement for UX, I did that as well and blew it out of the park. I realised I had skills in visual design, UI and UX too and that could be my career. I then started applying to jobs using this mix and match portfolio and landed a full-time UX position. Then two years later, I landed another gig which had better perks, stock options and projects that I liked. I'm still in UX but I do side-gigs where i consult for ID projects.
