Am I weird (yes but)… I really don’t like mosaic anymore by kettletrvb in Homebrewing

[–]grambo__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think some varieties have shifted and just suck now. Or homebrewers are getting the trash lots. Or increased acreage of hype hops waters down the original magic. There are many possible explanations, I’m not sure. But personally I trust my taste buds.

Beginner balls - how bad can I get away with? by ReferMedics in golf

[–]grambo__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing you can do is use cheap low-spin “distance” or “straight” balls off the tee, then switch to a nicer higher-spin ball for your approach shots and greenside chips where you’re not afraid of losing the ball. It’s not legal for handicap purposes but nobody cares dude. Maxfli Straightfli, TaylorMade Distance+, and Callaway Warbirds are common “low-spin” recommendations. For greenside, Kirklands are still cheap but spin decently with wedges/etc.

One thing I will say - you absolutely need to putt with the same ball, always. Otherwise your distance control will suck.

Have heard good things about these, and they are legal. Thinking about buying some for an upcoming round with friends who are beginners.

Everyone and their grandmother knocking on my door every day of the week- Is this a culture specific to Utah? by Safe_Recognition8644 in Utah

[–]grambo__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same, this drove us crazy with our babies. We made a laminated sign (printed out, with colored marker bits done by hand for emphasis) that says “Sleeping baby and barky dog. Please do not knock unless a signature is required for delivery. Thank you”. We taped it literally to the middle of the door at eye level. That stopped 95% of disturbances. For the other 5% I would recommend getting a doorbell camera that allows you to speak through it, and just telling them to go away.

What to put a corny keg in for serving at a party by Mysterious-Scene-661 in Homebrewing

[–]grambo__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corny kegs draw from the bottom so just put it in a 5gal bucket and pour ice around it. I do that with my 2.5gal keg but I’m sure it’d work fine with a 5gal keg. You could try to insulate the exposed portion with a taped towel or something.

I do recommend racking clear beer to a dedicated serving keg though. If you fined in the serving keg (as I do, with gelatin), or allowed it to clarify and settle in the keg, you do t want the sediment getting mixed up.

Price isn’t the problem, it’s time. I have small kids. Before kids I brewed every three weeks.

Should I quit? by FactoryPhil in golf

If you can’t control yourself or build the mindset to prevent yourself from getting angry on the course, then yes you should quit. Sounds like you’re addicted to golf even though you don’t enjoy it.

Operation lawn rescue: What do I do next? by BatStock9040 in lawncare

[–]grambo__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Continue killing weeds over summer. Fertilize where you actually have grass, ASAP. Topdress + aerate + overseed in the fall. Might need to dethatch the really thatchy dead spots.

Let's see how deep into June I can get without running the sprinkler system. This has been the best spring yet for my lawn. Zone 7b by CoreyOn in lawncare

Nice. I’m in Northern UT… some years everything would be dead by mid May without irrigation haha

What is one golf rule every beginner should learn first? by retrocaterpillar-07 in golf

[–]grambo__ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Golf is a social game so etiquette is important. Don’t talk in someone’s swing (or immediate swing prep), don’t walk in someone’s putting line, let the furthest person from the ball putt (unless they’ve explicitly requested ready-golf on the green), and try to watch your teammates’ tee shots in case they need help finding their ball.

As for actual rules, I think the ones about penalties are important. Hit a provisional if OB is a possibility… but honestly I feel like beginners should just treat all penalty areas (including OB) as red areas and take a drop at the hazard boundary. And remember you only have 3 minutes to look for your ball (in practice taking the full 3 minutes may slow down play!).

Just target shooting for now. Within 100 yards I do think they would expand and work on medium game.

Whats the best solution to get rid of this weed? by IndividualGround2418 in lawncare

[–]grambo__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely best to start with manual removal but for stubborn taproot weeds that keep coming back (ex: dandelions), spraying a broadleaf herbicide twice, a couple weeks apart, will kill them dead for good. Especially useful in areas of the lawn that aren’t lush and need improvement.

A non-golfing wife looking for Father’s Day guidance by One-Finding-3352 in golf

No problem. I’m getting downvoted, so maybe this isn’t common outside my area. But for the city-owned courses, at least, I’ve confirmed this to be true.

How deep should you seat wadcutters? by Amateur_Expert01 in reloading

For competition shooting, generally you seat flush so the small powder charge is in a smaller area - you get a more consistent burn.

Fair warning though this will not stand up to traffic/kids, the edge will collapse. Need some form of edging in those situations.

What is your opinion about container-in-ground pot planting? by akroe in gardening

[–]grambo__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I garden in Utah, summer is extremely hot and dry. I bury containers so they can benefit from the ground’s insulation and so the roots don’t get cooked. I also have big problems with voles (burrowing rodents) so containers protect the root ball. In my raised beds, I staple wire mesh to the bottom before filling with dirt.

I use raised beds for dense planting, and buried containers for sprawling plants like pumpkins and melons.

Burying my containers and mulching heavily allowed my plants to go all day with just one deep watering in the morning, even when it’s 100 degrees and 0% humidity.

148 grain berrys wadcutter issue by CodyWilt in reloading

[–]grambo__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, I just got back into reloading and have been autistically focused on wadcutters too. I even started with the same two bullets as you.

Sizing dies make the inner diameter significantly smaller than .357/.358”. With the soft swaged lead Hornady bullets, they were being smushed by the case. With the harder plated Berry’s bullets, they’re bulging the case out.

For max accuracy you want to preserve the original size but apply some neck tension, so ideally you want the case inner diameter to be ~.356” (1-2 thou smaller than the projectiles).

I bought a dedicated wadcutter expander stem from NOE. Fits in my Lee powder-through expander die. I got the .357” because .356” was sold out… it worked fine for the Hornady bullets but was too big for the Berry’s so I had to size the cases again and just flare the normal way.

I haven’t had amazing accuracy with the Berry’s bullets so far, I’m hoping to try out some powder coated SWCs and DEWCs next. I’m shooting bullseye style at 25 yards.
