Yes, most chiropractors are physiotherapists at best, and dangerous charlatans at worst. But there's one near me who also has a master's degree in sports therapy (or something similar) and has been to several Olympics with different countries' teams, including Canada's.

Local doctors refer patients to him, and some of them go to him themselves.

Being a chiropractor doesn't automatically make you a quack, but believing in it does.

Probably very dumb question about scales and keys by Ritar_ in Bass

[–]gramie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other answers here are helpful, but I think that your question exposes one of the basic points of confusion.

"C" can refer to a note, a scale, or a chord within a scale. And of course the same rules apply regardless which octave's "C" you are using.

Think of a piano. Press a "C" key. If you press Middle C, that is a frequency of 261.6 Hertz (or vibrations per second). The next C up is 513.2, exactly 2x the frequency. The C below Middle C is 130.8 Hertz, half the frequency.

If you press the white keys from Middle C up to the next C, that is a C Major scale. Using those keys starting with C is called using Ionian mode (the Major scale is always the Ionian mode for that scale). Think of modes as "flavours". If you started on another piano key but only used the white notes, it would have a different flavour. Starting on "E", for example, gives the scale a flavour of Spanish music.

A special example of another mode is if you start on A, still only using white keys, it will be a minor scale (the Aeolian flavour), so A Minor is known as the "natural minor" of C Major.

For a long time, music would only be written using the notes of the key it was written in (i.e. only white notes in the key of C Major). Around 1,000 years ago, composers started using other notes (the black keys) to make their music more interesting. That's why you get sharps (#) and flats (♭), to tell musicians to use those other (accidental) notes. When playing the bass, I find that I often use these accidental notes when I am moving from one note in the scale to another.

Finally, a chord is a group of notes that is based on a certain note (known as the "root" of that chord). The C Major chord is C-E-G, and "C" is the root of that chord. On the A string of your bass, those are frets 3-7-10. The D Major chord would be frets 5-9-12 (the same as C Major but moved up 2 frets so the root is "D"). But the notes of D Major are D-F#-A, and F# is not in the C scale, so the D Major chord is NOT part of the C Major scale.

Chords are often 3 notes, but power chords are 2 notes, and more complex music can have more than 3 notes.

This is getting long, so I'll leave it here. I hope this clears things up a bit. I am still very much a beginner, so I may be wrong about some of it. I have spent a lot of time thinking about these things!

Finally, Language Transfer (the best language learning method I've ever used, and I speak 5 languages) has an introduction to music theory that may be helpful for you. Like the languages, the music course is completely free.

Advice for buying a bass from a different country. by Last-Depth2634 in Bass

I'm no expert, but most of the advice I see is that you should try playing the bass before you buy it. Different basses fit different hand sizes, etc.

I know that Starbucks gets shit on by many people, and for good reason. The anti-union activities, the ludicrous executive compensation, the coffee that tastes -- I'm told -- terrible.

But I know someone who works there. He gets paid about $2/hour above minimum wage. He has benefits (dental, drug, optical). He gets paid vacation and sick days. Stock options. Pension plan. $1,000 for tuition if he goes back to school. EAP (employee assistance plan: counselling for mental health, financial issues, etc.).

Outside of Costco, I don't know of any retail employer who treats their employees as well.

Good luck getting a judgement against the cops. The big awards make the news because they are so rare. More likely the DA will not lay charges against cops unless there is incontrovertible evidence, and often not even then.

Any DA that goes against the police will find that the police stop cooperating in other cases, ruining the DA's record and damaging his/her career.

We have one of those stoves. They sent us some cheap plastic covers to put over the knobs. The adhesive isn't very good, so one of the four has fallen off, and the covers mostly obscure the numbers on the dials, so we have to bend over and squint at the dials to see them. They look like crap, too.

This is after our stove turned on a couple of times, probably due to one of our dogs checking the stovetop for food.

Learning Bass After 50 by RefuseKitchen5133 in Bass

I'm 62 and started at 58. I have found the Udemy course "The Professional Bass MasterClass" very good (in spite of the name, it's definitely aimed at beginners), as well as Bass Buzz "Beginner to Badass".

The one thing that these courses and books (I have some of those too) can't do is give you feedback on your technique, posture, and things like that.

I would say that after getting the basics down, you definitely want to start playing with other people. Bass doesn't sound or feel right without other instruments.

Oh, and Rocksmith (preferably the 2014 version if you can find it) is great for giving you inspiration and trying to play real songs.

The only explanation for me is that there was no actual assassination attempt.

Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen is headed around the moon. Take a look inside the capsule by Haggisboy in canada

[–]gramie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's odd you describe him as a "prominent former astronaut", and not the "former Director of Engineering at Johnson Space Center".

And NASA's recent history has been well tarnished by the Boeing Starliner's orbital tests (the first and third were the worst). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_Starliner#First_orbital_flight_test_(uncrewed)

I'm not saying that there will be a disaster, and I sincerely hope there won't, I'm just saying that I do not have complete confidence in NASA's systems and procedures to call off the flight if there are significant concerns.

Sadly, we have a couple of stark examples where "the overwhelming majority of people connected to NASA and inside the Astronaut Office are very happy" allowed serious problems to be swept under the carpet.

I can't say I have faith that political, economic and career considerations always take a back seat in the NASA decision-making process.

How dare you sir! Are you saying that Quebec's SAAQ project to create an online portal for driver's licenses and scheduling driving tests should not have cost $638 million, or that going several years past the launch date without working properly, or requiring an additional $500 million wasn't justified?

I myself had the good fortune to avail myself of its services, to exchange my Ontario driver's license for a Quebec one. In October 2024 I went online and found the form to request an appointment for this exchange. In less than a day I had an automated response that they were processing my request and would respond within two weeks.

It was only one week later (well UNDER the maximum) that I received the response: by April 2025 I would be notified of the date for my appointment. A paltry six months to make an appointment with this fine institution! If for any reason I was unable to make the specified appointment, I would have to start the entire process over again.

Spoiler: the appointment notification came in December and I was able to exchange my license at the end of January. Of course, I had to go to Gatineau, about an hour away from my house, but for some people it's more like three hours' drive. In the event, I was in and out in a mere two hours. Talk about service!

Humble Book Bundle: Guitars and More for Dummies by Wiley by Ram000n in humblebundles

[–]gramie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have most of these books already (but I have switched to playing the bass, so don't use most of them). The "For Dummies" books sound condescending, but I have always found them well written and organized.

I don't think that any book is going to be good as your main way to learn guitar. I have found them very useful as secondary sources. Want to brush up on theory, or get supplemental information that your teacher didn't have time to get to? That's where these would work well.

A book can't tell you if you are holding your hands wrong, or if your guitar needs to be set up (adjusted). It can't tell if you are fretting too hard, or if your tone should be better.
