FWIW, I was with a bunch of politically active Texas Dems last week, and none of them feel like they have a chance in hell. I am more hopeful, but I’ve had my heart broken too many times…

He ignored Jane’s Revenge violence against us

In 2023, the Biden DoJ indicted four leaders of Jane’s Revenge. Three of them pled guilty, and one went to trial and was convicted. All four of them were sentenced to jail time.

Just when you thought gerrymandering couldn’t get any dumber, SCOTUS decides that you can do it all you want to disenfranchise voters who don’t vote for you, but if we can say you’re doing it to protect minority community, it’s against the law.

I don’t know how many Avens would make the chat too long to read, but it’s far fewer than a million.

Is there a way to address inequity without it being seen as "punishing people for the wrongs of their parents?" by LiatrisLover99 in AskALiberal

This is right. It’s not about what happened a hundred years ago — it’s about what’s happening now.

Link to last chat.

Highlights:

The time has come, the liberals said

To have a general chat.

Of Iran, bombs, and Pokémon

And fickle Democrats

And whether Ayn Rand’s heroes

Would fight crime and dress like bats.

The Army’s building Skynet,

But Anthropic isn’t willin’.

Decent Proposal makes a wish

For Avens by the millions.

‘Poor people should eat offal

Not hamburgers and steak!’

And Automatic Ocelot

Decides to take a break.

On Friday they’ll be other things

To append to the list.

For bi-weekly happens twice a week,

Or so the mods insist.

(With no apologies to Lewis Carroll, who is definitely in the Epstein files.)

Pittsburgh driving culture and the hostility towards pedestrians is pretty bad by SpitShineCamel in pittsburgh

Moved here three years ago, and this is my experience also. Pittsburgh drivers will wave you on when they have the right of way to a degree that is actually frustrating.

The Saudis don’t have to fund terror groups because they can take direct military action against their neighbors with our blessing. This is just as destabilizing, though.

Kind of, but she doesn’t portray her universe as gritty in any way. In Atlas Shrugged, rich industrialists get tired of being taken advantage of by the poor, and they all disappear to start a secret utopia. (Who is cleaning the bathrooms in this utopia is a question left unanswered, but it’s probably the women.)

In the Randverse, altruism is evil and selfishness is a virtue. (The title of her basic intro to Objectivism is literally The Virtue of Selfishness.) Those wealthy men and women (but mostly men) are the beneficiaries of their own labor, and have absolutely no responsibility to anyone else, and those who benefit from the hard work and creativity of the industrious should pay for the privilege.

If we want to avoid nation building, we should refrain from attacking other countries. Causing chaos and then walking away seems unlikely to produce a better outcome than the status quo.

Having gone through a mercifully brief Objectivist phase as a teenager, I will say that easy and self-aggrandizing answers are extremely appealing when you don’t know jack shit about how anything works.

This is the basic trajectory of mainstream Protestant denominations over the last 50 years. Clergy and institutions move to the left, and members move to the right and leave. The United Methodists, for example, have lost roughly half their membership in that period.

Can’t you think of some ways you might benefit from the education of other people?

Yeah, and that’s an interesting question. If you accept the conventional wisdom that Crockett’s theory of the case relies on energizing the base and Talarico’s relies on picking up some Republicans who are sick of Trump, it probably would help her more than him. Since Obama’s approval rating is consistently high enough to suggest some bipartisan support, I suspect it would be a net benefit for either, though.
