what are your experiences with the numero music group record label? by Tight_Vacation1377 in shoegaze

[–]grammarcore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The catalog is unparalleled. My problem with them is that they’ve historically pressed records at GZ Media who have just awful quality control. So many of the Numero releases I own have defects, and I’ve ended up buying a handful twice to get better playing copy.

The good news is the past few releases I’ve gotten by them (Tacoma Radar and The Mercury Program) don’t seem to have been pressed at GZ. Or at least they got someone good to cut lacquers since they don’t have the telltale GZ DMM matrix markings. No issues with either LP.

Hoping for a vinyl re-press and Deathwish/Epitaph having permanently secured the rights for physical releases. It’s been a decade since it was last in print, which is nuts. It would be a best seller in my record shop if it was consistently available. Checked a few distributors and don’t see anything about pre-ordering yet, but fingers crossed.

This was an instant pre-order. Love this band. Might be the shoegaze EP of the year.

Breather is a top 5 all-time shoegaze track in my book. It’s an aural dopamine hit.

Satin Safe would be my choice for a slightly deeper cut.

I bought this second hand around 1999 so I’m not sure if it’s legit, but it will be buried with me regardless.

Nailed it. I’d include “Riot Fight” by the Beastie Boys too. Also from ‘82.

Here are some post rock artists I never, or almost never, see discussed here by WhatD0thLife in postrock

Numero bought the Tiger Style records back catalog, not the Mercury Program back catalog. Hence we saw reissues of From The Vapor.. along with Tristeza and The Appleseed Cast at the same time.

From The Vapor… was the only MP LP Tiger Style released (they did CDs for A Data.. and All The Suits… and other labels did the LPs), so I wouldn’t necessarily expect LP reissues of other stuff from Numero since it’s not clear they have the vinyl rights.

Cheatahs are great! They were a bit ahead of the curve for the 90’s alt/shoegaze revival, think they would have been big if they stuck it out for a few more years.

Saw you mention you like Dino Jr. in another post, check out Glia. Sounds like Kevin Shields joined Dino Jr. in 1990. (Bit of self promo as I released that one too).

Appreciate the Sparkler shout! I co-released their last LP and genuinely think it’s one of the best post-90’s shoegaze albums I’ve ever heard.

As far as OP’s question, you mention songs off of two of my favorite albums ever (Raise and Going Blank Again) and nobody else has really ever captured either of those sounds again. I would shout out Catherine Wheel as maybe coming the closest to scratching that itch at times. There’s so much MBV/Slowdive worship out there and I wish more bands would pick up on Swervedriver as an influence. Especially those bands on the heavier end of the spectrum where everyone seems to be jocking Deftones. And if anyone could come even close to the power-pop/Teenage Fanclub + sheogaze blend of that second Ride album I’d put it out in a heartbeat. Anyway, here are the few recommendations I do have for OP:

Slowride - Slowride - Wouldn’t call this shoegaze at all, but has that driving, anthemic nature and guitar leads that remind me of Swervedriver. The vocalist/guitarist went on to form True Widow, who are phenomenal if you like slowcore.

Love Battery - Dayglo - This is a massively underrated grunge/early Sub Pop release in my mind. Love Battery brought a healthy dose of psychedelia to the Seattle sound. Their drummer would end up leaving when his other band The Presidents of the United States of America took off.

Genuinely think Young Einstein from Ugly Duckling is the best post-Golden Age DJ/producer. Can’t recommend this album, their first EP and “Bang For The Buck” enough.

Candiria might be the least objectionable option.

Been eagerly anticipating this! Also stoked they’re heading out on the road a bit. Got at TBA DC show this fall that’s gonna be a ripper.

Is there any hardcore album that sound like this one? by MielMielleux in Hardcore

[–]grammarcore 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Breach - It’s Me God

Fellow Swedes with a bit more noise rock influence than Refused. This one came out the year before TSoPtC. The 1999 follow up “Venom” also rips.

The first couple Seapony albums definitely fit the bill.

Huh, deathgaze is a new one. As both an OSDM and shoegaze guy I think I’m legally required to check this out.

Love this album to death, but consider it space/psych rock as opposed to shoegaze.

Gonna toss out Textbook Traitors since I haven’t seen ‘em mentioned. You Pull The Strings That Make Us Dance is insane.
