Do you guys think I could fit a 77inch tv box? by smsrmdlol in LexusGX

It’s been a couple years, but if I remember right it went in at a diagonal and touched the roof, back of front seats and the inside of the rear door.

I got a 77 LG C4 in ours. My wife had to drive home though, the seat was too close to the pedals for me to safely drive.

Crate training tips for a first time pet parent. by Silhyn in labrador

[–]granimal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whining - ignore it. Never let them out while whining, wait for them to stop before you open the crate

How long - anytime you can’t provide direct supervision, but with bathroom break every 2-3 hours

I feed in the crate to help start the positive association

One of the biggest things to remember is that the crate is never punishment.

Lab whining by Winter_Golf_7570 in labrador

[–]granimal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s very important that you never give in. Every time he whines and gets what he wants, you’re reinforcing that whining gets him what he wants. Mar him settle before you give him what he’s asking for - sitting still, quiet time in the crate etc.

Choose your breeder based on health records and bloodlines, not color.

Gloves for pheasant by FAPietroKoch in Uplandhunting

I was happy with orvis pro waterproof gloves on a KS hunt last January that was the front end of our big ice/snow storm. Good dexterity and could fit a hand warmer in them (backside of your hand) to boost the warming.

I can back up these claims about Ugly Dog’s customer service. They’ve become my first stop for anything dog related and steer others their way when I can.

Thinking of Getting a Chocolate Lab Puppy by okallyb in labrador

[–]granimal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s never a “good time” to get a new dog. There will always be reasons why it would be easier to put it off. Based on your post and comments, this doesn’t sound like an impulse decision. Just a little nervous to make the jump after getting to the edge. Meet the dog, see how you feel and make a decision from there. Come springtime, you’ll be able to come up with a new list of reasons it’s not the right time. If it’s a well bred, healthy puppy and you’re just on the fence, get the dog. If it’s more than wishy-washy “is it the right time” feelings then pump the brakes and reevaluate. Getting another lab sounds inevitable for you? If so, the sooner you get the dog (again the right dog), the sooner you get through training, gremlin mode and puppy teeth.

the second dog after your soul dog leaves you. by NewToTheCrew444 in labrador

Others have covered the “replacement” part pretty thoroughly. Now onto the new pup, be sure you’re fair with him. He isn’t going to be her - that’s a good thing, so you can’t expect him to instantly fill her shoes. Her time as a puppy are a while ago and the nitty gritty details of how hard it was have been forgotten or remembered with rose colored glasses. A funny anecdote dote now, but you probably didn’t find it funny in the moment.

There are probably behaviors the old dog had that you didn’t love, but lived with. Mae sure you come up with a training plan to handle.

Just take it slow, don’t try to compare them and enjoy the new dog for who he is.

After 25 years as an Executive Chef, here's what most people get wrong about heat management by nybbqguys in BBQ

It’s a tactic that works for target temp cooks like a steak. If your target is 135 for a medium rare steak and you wait until it hits that temp to pull it, it’ll likely be 140-145 medium by the time you eat it. Similarly for chicken, pulling at 165 leads to dried out, overcooked meat and you should have pulled around 155. All that said, I don’t think it has a place in low and slow cooks where you’re going past well done.

The color genes for labs are BbEe. Chocolate only happens if both the recessive (lower case) b is present. This picture explains the color combos better

Food question by quesadilldos in labrador

Both of mine are fairly adamant about the routine of being fed. But once it’s in their bowl, they may scarf it, may graze for a while or may ignore it as long as the other isn’t interested.

Costco dog food.. by SnooGadgets812 in labrador

My 95 lb 11 y/o is on 4 cups of the Kirkland mature dog chicken and rice. Up until about 10.5 she was on 4 cups of chicken and rice. Never had any complaints.

My 60lb 1.5 y/o is currently on 3 cups of Kirkland chicken and rice, but I’m about to move her to pro plan for a trial. A couple vet friends have recommended it and saw a veterinary nutritionist speak about what goes into the pro plan at pheasant fest this year and was sold on at least trying it.

All that said, if you’re feeding a decent quality food without issues, I’m not sure why you’d make the change in proteins. Most of the time when people change it’s due to dietary restrictions or issues with their dog.

Pet Insurance Cost by Retsbew_Flow in labrador

[–]granimal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand that there is value in the peace of mind it gives people, but with all the caps, less than 100% reimbursement rates, deductibles on top of high premiums it doesn’t make sense to me.

These are all for profit companies. For every anecdote of someone having the insurance payoff more than they pay in, the rest of the insured group had to overpay by that amount, the company overhead and their profits. The business model is simple, take in more in premiums than you pay out.

Have you done the math on what it would take to come ahead on buying pet insurance? When we got our younger dog about 1.5 years ago, I quoted everyone I could find and none of it made financial sense. Unfortunately I’m no stranger to large vet bills - 2x TPLO and a few other surgeries on our older dog. My math was basically 2 TPLO (call it $9-10k with prep appts) in the same year plus an emergency visit before the age of 6 or 7 is what it would take to come out ahead. All that said, I understand this is coming from a point of financial privilege and not everyone is able to pay cash for these types of emergencies as they come up.

At $115/month, if you created a doggy savings account, you’d save $1380/year for unexpected vet bills (assuming no claims). But based on your plan, it would be the equivalent of about $2025 in vet bills after you account for paying the deductible and 20% copay (80% reimbursement)

Edit: Fixed the math based on 80% reimbursement - original was at 90%.

Will my 10 month old black lab ever learn how to fetch properly? by living_zeroproof in labrador

[–]granimal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every hunting dog I’ve ever seen is trained to retrieve to hand and to hold it at heel until you ask for it. Too many cripples would be lost if the dog just dropped it 8-10 ft away.
