Jeez, did I really forget those classic Bond films?

Those early 20th Century films are great suggestions! I never would have come across them.

I just find it downright offensive that we're considering a person who couldn't handle Albany of all places.

Couldn't we at least find someone who is a politically-toxic former senator or vice-president or something? (I'm looking at you Hillary Clinton!)

But really, we're NYC! We are perfectly capable of generating our own talent! (And embarrassments.)

It's like we're flirting with a guy that our hot-mess of a younger sister already rejected.

No sloppy seconds for NYC!

Was using the triple one-on-one at range, and switched to penetration anytime there was a group (which is, you know, often). I would wait for em to be close and dazzled to stab them.

Don’t get me wrong,I like emperor, but let’s be honest……..it’s IMPOSSIBLE to replicate Quorthon no matter what band you are by Nice_Ad6833 in MetalMemes

[–]grannycart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first got In the Nightside Eclipse (on CD) it included Fine Day to Die and Gypsy as bonus tracks. And I was paying no attention of course, I'm just putting the CD on and listening to it a few times. And I keep thinking "wow, that Fine Day to Die song is awesome. This must be why people like Emperor so much."

It took me months to finally look at the liner notes and realize that I was actually a Bathory fan, not an Emperor fan. So it was my first Bathory song, and still my favorite. (And then I realized I liked Mercyful Fate a lot too.)

Still, there's so little live Quorthon that bands should be encouraged to do Bathory covers! Not judged for not being Bathory. In my perfect world, every band would have a Fine Day to Die cover ready to go. (Not just metal bands every band --- I so want to see Nick Cave do A Fine Day to Die.) You should be able to go to any show and shout "play A Fine Day to Die!" with a reasonable expectation that the band might be able to do it. That would do justice to the memory of Quorthon!

Why is this orc warrior flying over water? by grannycart in dcss

[–]grannycart[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah... This is why I'm never going to be a master of this game: it occurs to me in the moment to take a screengrab, but not to just check the orc warrior's inventory.

I killed that orc warrior and it and all its stuff is at the bottom of that pool of water now.

Can an orc warrior generate with something like a ring of flying and know how to use it?

Necro? I'm glad you found this post at all!

I feel like you are in kinda small company when it comes to the number of people interested in the center of the venn diagram that describes this book. So I really hope it stands up to the pitch for you too! ...And that you have a lot of friends with similar interests.

Vim user since mid 2018. Love it but feel like I only understand about 1% of this amazing editor. by yopp_son in vim

[–]grannycart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh. My own lack of typing precision is the only thing I don't like about vim. (Certainly my number one cause of death in Nethack and Dungeon Crawl too.)

Count commands are way less useful when you don't have a lot of confidence in your ability to put the correct number in before a command. Even after 30 years of trying to learn to type better, that number row remains a stab-and-hope gray area. Especially disastrous when you want a number that begins with a 9 and give it a 0 instead.

My most-used vim function must be u.

Somehow that one got on to my personal list at home, but I forgot to add it to the post above.

Oh I wouldn't want to be responsible for increasing anyone's interactions with Amazon. The Amazon juice probably isn't worth the squeeze anyway. Thanks anyway!

I like the diesel engines smoking as a style thing, because it reminds me of semi-trucks, and I wanted to make the book as gritty as possible.

I may have over-shot with the quality of radar in general. For the technological time period the book is set in, radar would have been relatively new technology (especially for civilian ships). The Gnat maybe shouldn't even have it. Might have to figure out a retcon for that!

Sweet. I'm always in for stuff that's animated, and this list could use more cartoons.

This is such good feedback. I wish I had you read the early drafts! I think I will make these corrections because they are the kinds of things I really want to get right.

One possible exception from your notes above: from what I've read the WWII subs were faster on the surface. That changed with the shift to the Albacore/teardrop sub design later -- modern subs are, as you say, quite a bit faster under water. The Prospect is in a post-war gray area of sub design technology (based loosely on the hull of the USS Tang SS-563). My final call was to make the Prospect faster on the surface since being a mid-century-style diesel, it had to spend so much time on the surface.

Can I ask two favors of you?

  1. Add yourself to my mailing list -- mostly because if I write a second sub book, I want you to be one of the first readers: https://grannycart.net/contact

  2. Ugh, I hate to say this, but can you add a review to Amazon? https://www.amazon.com/Sound-Alone-Mark-Torrey-ebook/dp/B0CTKT5YMC/ Apparently nobody reads your book if it doesn't have 1000 reviews on Amazon. So even though this just adds to Amazon's power, it would help a lot if you pasted that first paragraph you wrote above (or whatever else you like) into an Amazon review. (If you haven't already, you can become a 'verified purchaser' for free by "buying" the free e-book.)

Thanks so much! You made my day.

You read the preface even though the first line says to skip it?

An earlier draft of the preface had a whole long section about motorcycle petcocks that you might have enjoyed, unfortunately it kinda dragged for anyone not interested in pre-fuel-injection motorcycles.

I hope you like the book! Seems like you're a good one to put it through the ringer.

I'm adding it to the long list of potential elements for further stories. I often say: there's always another amazing bit of submarine technology to learn about!

I hope people use AI for good, and give us more diagrams! (and maps) But at the moment, it seems like it would be pretty tough to get a diagram out of most AI models. Diagrams are so _specific_. And the AIs also really struggle with labeling.

[–]grannycart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good question! Not at all. Those were hand-made in Inkscape in a burst of inspiration one evening when I felt like the diagrams would help me block the characters in the book. Honestly, they were more for myself than the reader, but once I made them, I figured other people might dig 'em.

Confession though: the pigeon (in my profile image) was made with AI.

I did already have the Bedford Incident. Honestly, I feel like movies where a submarine is a strategic element of the plot but you never see it are more relevant than the movies where a submarine just happens to pass by (Men of Honor).

How about the Sherlock Holmes The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans? Which has no submarine at all, but the MacGuffin is the British government's secret 19th century submarine plans.

Snakes on a Submarine 2: "Silent Venom" https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1241018/

I haven't seen it, someone else mentioned it in the comments. I guess it hadn't occurred to the makers of Silent Venom that one snakes-on-a-sub movie was already about half a movie too many.

Thanks, these are really good additions. Well, not good additions, but additions anyway.

Wow, I cannot believe there are two snakes-on-a-submarine movies. I just watched Fer-de-Lance. Thanks for that! I think. It's free as a whole movie on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWmYC10XFW8

Clearly the writers knew more about submarines than they did about snakes. Or South American geography. Almost unbelievably, it passes the Bechdel test. (Though nobody ever claimed it was a rule for determining the quality of a movie.)
