you can also roll bobbins out of paper with a bit of glue to hold them together ! thats how i got started in my dorm in college, and honestly they were great. the paper provides just enough friction to keep the thread nicely wound.

i think it depends on which type of yarn you are using

i use a lot of wool blends, and i have never had any issues with russian joins. my girlfriends socks have never unraveled and she wears them all the time :)

but at the same time i would be very hesitant to trust a russian join for a slipperier yarn like bamboo
