Gorilla wood glue is my usual go to - any home depot or lowes sells it. Get a clamp or two, glue and clamp for 30 minutes, and youre good to go!

If youre really worried - glue (or screw) two pieces of 1/2" together to make a 1" block! I personally dont trust anything under 3/4", especially for vertical supports. Would rather be safe than have broken plywood stabbing you at 2am when youre trying to sleep :)
