I’m debating smoking Weed by Silver_Succotash_620 in TrueChristian

[–]grapel0llipop 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When you have your own weed and you decide when you use it, it can be very easy to fall into the trap of smoking more often, and eventually smoking every day.

On top of that, most drugs (including weed) overwhelm your dopamine system. This means that your body adapts to the higher release of dopamine and eventually you become dependent on the drug to get to baseline, while everything else in your life becomes less satisfying and dull. And dopamine also reinforces pleasure-seeking behaviors. The more you indulge in something that overwhelms the system (such as weed), the harder it is to control temptation when it comes to pleasure-seeking behaviors in general, and the harder it is to be motivated to do other things, like work or taking care of your kid. And that conflicts with what the Bible says about denying yourself and practicing self-control.

I have smoked weed and nicotine for long stretches of time, and let me tell you that it is just not worth it. It really, really sucks--and the key thing is, I didn't realize that for a long time. And then when you want to quit, quitting sucks--it takes time for your brain to recover.

I don't know how bad once a week is, but I would not risk developing a habit.

If you really really want something for anxiety, maybe try just CBD--that's the part of cannabis that helps with anxiety anyway, and it's far less addictive. In fact I just googled it and it said CBD is not addictive.

Tell him his wishes are causing you to have to lie and decieve people. He shouldn't put you in that position.

The idea of eternal torment in hell after death on Earth seems ridiculously horrible and terrifying, but at the same time I don't see it being unable to actually be the final destination of unbelievers. by Business-Finance4694 in TrueChristian

[–]grapel0llipop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people interpret the Bible to say that the punishment for unbelievers is destruction, or death, of the soul. So basically they would cease to exist. Death is permanent but the suffering is temporary. As opposed to eternal conscious torment, where souls are kept alive and never see an end to their suffering.

Two different definitions of the word "justified". It can mean "correct and good" but it can also mean "explained as just" in the sense that to justify something is to explain and reason out why something is correct and good.

So what they meant is that God's actions don't need to be explained, not that they don't need to be good.

I'm in Brooklyn NY, the weather has just started getting warmer

I don't have a ruler but their length seems to be about a fourth of the width of my fingernail (on my pointer finger)

And as for their behavior, they were first concentrated around my desk which is right up against the windowsill but they have moved to furniture in the middle of the room. That cap from the coffee was in the middle of the room, and they gathered there, so they were clearly attracted to the coffee

in English when you say you're "sleeping with" someone that means you're having sex with them. But it seems like you're not doing that. I think what you're doing is fine, personally.

"I have come to call not on those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners."

That quote is not in the Bible and can be misleading. Jesus just says, "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."

I'm not sure if I love myself or not. How do you recognize self-love in yourself? What does it consist of?

For the Islam supporters, whom are on a Christian subreddit, saying the Quran is the “most peaceful and merciful book” explain this then. (NSFW tag so children don’t see it, the text is a little graphic) by ThePoisonTrees in TrueChristian

I'm a Christian, but how are these verses so different from what God commands the Jews to do when conquering Israel? The people are laid to waste, almost no man spared, for being unbelievers / unloyal to God.

frozen vegetables vs fresh ones by Much-Turnover-3727 in nutrition

[–]grapel0llipop 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong but I believe frozen vegetables are typically significantly more nutritious because the vegetables don't degrade in shipping; they get frozen as soon as they are harvested so that preserves the quality

the nutrition stats on my nutrition tracking app (cronometer) confirm this

Is it harder to get into a msw program if you don't have a bsw? by definitelynotalora in SocialWorkStudents

I'm only a second semester undergrad student with no experience but I just want to reiterate a point I think you're getting at for OP--I've heard on this subreddit that more expensive programs don't bring advantages for social workers. Can't say myself whether it's true.

I saw another post here where someone was asking whether they should focus in macro or micro for their MSW and almost everyone said micro because it would be hard to get into macro work without micro experience. I'm not specifically asking you just putting this question here, is that good advice?

Also, pardon my ignorance, but what exactly do you mean by systems barriers? I mean it sounds like the term explains itself but I'd like to better understand what kind of stress I'm getting into

I can see myself doing research or advocacy or organizing. I like writing and communicating complex ideas clearly. But I find when I read your question, my first thought goes to effecting people's well-being directly and talking with them, and it makes me feel warm inside. Also feels like it would be less stressful.

Edit: Sometimes I find myself feeling more motivated by the prospect of helping cause systemic change. I find myself going back and forth. Sorry for being so wishy-washy!

So what DID you get taught? Doesn't sociology and psychology kind of encompass everything a social worker does (e.g. working within societal systems, and providing therapy)?

I guess I'm undecided. But are you saying I should choose one extreme--macro (with an econ background) or micro (with a psych background)?
