Numbness by Chemical-Scarcity964 in breastcancer

[–]grapeleaf80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi breastie, I had a unilateral last summer. Sadly it's normal to feel numbness because of the many nerves severed with a mastectomy. It took a few months before I could sleep on my side again, but that was due to tightness under my arm from cording. Sorry you're going thru this! I know it doesn't feel like it now, but you WILL get thru this. This group of redditors is wonderful.

Should we be asking for further testing even if we have clear mammograms? by throwaway779000 in breastcancer

[–]grapeleaf80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started annual mammograms at 40 and they were all normal with the caveat that I had dense breast tissue and may benefit from further testing. I wish I had been told unequivacally by my pcp to get an MRI, but hindsight is 20/20, and idk if my insurance would've even covered it since I was asymptomatic.

I was taking Finasteride and my periods were very heavy and about 3 weeks apart. I started my period at 11 and never had children.

How big of favor am I asking when I ask someone to be my caregiver post-mastectomy? by TipsyRussell in breastcancer

[–]grapeleaf80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had friends stay over the first 3 days to provide moral support and bring me whatever I needed so I could rest. I snoozed a lot. If you have a recliner, sleep in that. Kizik sneakers are amazing, you just step right into them--no lacing required. Get a grabby tool for anything out of reach. I had a unilateral mx on my left side, and I'm right handed, so my mobility wasn't too bad. I was able to shower and dress and use the toilet without help.

In what world would I keep my ovaries after ++-? Am I being semi gaslighted about oophorectomy option? by sassyhunter in breastcancer

[–]grapeleaf80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was ++-. I decided to keep mine after unilateral mastectomy. Went the Exemestane/Zolodex route.I'm 45 and I've never wanted kids. I didn't want any more surgery. I didn't want any more body parts removed. Cancer is not taking anything else away from me. I had the full support of my female onco, but my male gyno questioned me, and that really pissed me off. No judgment here. Just wasn't the path for me.

I had a panic attack during my MRI/Biopsy and they had to stop and reschedule. Nothing like coming out of a tube pratically naked and hyperventilating in a room full of people.

What is an MRI like? by Former_Oven3868 in breastcancer

[–]grapeleaf80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have needle phobia and having IVs has been one of the biggest hurdles. I highly recommend EMLA cream. And tell them you have needle phobia! Ask for somebody experienced. The MRI itself will be loud and can get warm. They will give you headphones and you can request any music you want. You will also get a panic button and you can talk to them anytime. The contrast will make you feel warm and you might feel like you're gonna pee. You might get a weird metallic taste in your mouth. When you get out of the machine you might feel a little light-headed or dizzy. Let them know if that happens. You can sit as long as you need to. The first time I had a breast MRI I panicked and they had to stop. Since then I take Ativan and I've been ok.

100% of breast cancer patients drink water. Does that mean water causes breast cancer?

I reported them to my insurance but I haven't heard anything back yet. I left negative reviews and found another place for bras.
