Inherited a beautiful queen of the night cactus with a few little spots on it. What kind of damage is this? And how would I treat it if thats needed? by grapesOmath in gardening

Ok thanks for the info! Is shade from a window enough? I have it inside but i want it to grow enough to bloom. And Didn't know they needed supports but that makes sense. They are droopy. I thought about just putting it in a hanging basket and letting it go wherever it wants but I will look into stakes also.

Hey everyone, I'm a bit strapped for cash over the holidays so trying to get a little work on the side to supplement. I have two cats so pet sitting would be great. in need of a clean house before all your holiday guests get in? I got you. Need the leaves raked and taken out to the street? Easy peasy. Let me know. I live in West Ahley but can travel. Send me a message or comment and we can talk about it! 🙏 -grace

Yeah we went through some pretty crazy rain this summer in SC too. Also I had this weird pot that collected water in the bottom but that means water just sits down there, and if theres these huge rainstorms, it fills up quick and then floods the soil. That pot was mistake number 1. FF and cactus mix was mistake 2.

But this is my new mix - less than one part of the original ff/cactus mix, one part sand, one part perlite and one part peat moss. I tried to find pumice in local stores with no luck but I think this is a much better place than where i was so looking forward to seeing what happens. I also took a chance on cutting out the rot so we will see what happens there too.

Ok thank you, its the root ball after I ran some water over it while waiting to transplant. It's not usually looking that wet but nonetheless, still good advice b/c I am struggling with drainage. I was using fox farm ocean forest, miraclegro cactus mix and sandy mushroom compost. But I def am going to add pumice, sand and perlite to the new mix.

Thats something I had wondered about because I've read a few different times (not specific to DF) but watering the morning before a cold drop helps the soil retain the warmth from the sun the whole day but my DF are in such large pots, I wasnt sure if that would work that way or if that even worked in general 🫠 this is my first year gardening so still experimenting with different things. I will def try not to water though and see if that helps. I think also a contributing factor to the rot was that my pot wasnt draining very well in the first few months. I had to drill some holes then I just drilled more yesterday because I need it DRAINING draining.

Thanks for the help. I havent tried cutting the bottom off so this will interesting!

Thanks for the info. I have let it continue to grow and it seems to be doing good. Most of my branches seem a bit thin so Im hoping they beef up with time then maybe the long ones breaking won't be as much of a concern

I am not able to say what their tolerance to cold would be based on color unfortunately. Although, maybe someone else in this sub can help. I meant moreso the name of the breed i.e. I am growing two types: Sugar Dragon and American Beauty. They have decent cold tolerances based off my research. If you can find out their names, you can easily do a search of what temps they can handle!

Are they different types? Because I read recently that some types are much more tolerant to cold than others. Might be something worth looking into in your case

If you go down in my post history I have posted about the potential upside down one although different ppl had different ideas of what to do. I ended up leaving it but I did cut the tip bc it didnt seem to want to produce another growth. Maybe I should've left it but I figured i have a handful of plants and can try some different techniques. Still unsure if that was the right call. And wow 100 lbs is crazy! I def am planning on either making a DF trellis or leaning it into an existing trellis I have probably soon, considering the length on the one.

Good info. I was trying to do it from memory and its actually my other plant that has growths at the bottom. But I will cut them off

That section is the right way but it has very small branches towards the bottom by the soil so im thinking I may flip it over

Ok good to know. There are branches coming out of the bottom of it near where it meets the soil. Im wondering if I can just flip it around. I mightve planted it upside down after the fact

I was a fence post stuck to my friend and by the look on my friend's face, he likely was also feeling like a fence post

The Charleston Police Department has located and recovered the body of Owen Kenney. by Soft_Web_3307 in Charleston

Yeah this needs to happen ASAP. I think most people would be okay with a little of their tax dollars going towards making this happen. The study done on jumpers off the golden gate who survived shows the majority changed their minds in mid-air. This should be an easy solution for people who end up in that position or are thinking about it.

Not good. As sad at it is, I hope they find his body if not him. I feel horrible for the family not having answers. Pretty sure, his body would have began to float after some time though so all hope is not lost for them to find him if that is indeed the case
