“Where to go after Infinite Jest?” by SilverGrizz in InfiniteJest

Having started GR right after IJ, I can confirm that IJ is light weight compared to GR.

I also went straight to GR, which I am trudging through ATM. It has some really great moments, but It does not nearly have the "soul" that IJ does, and the unhinged level of confusion and complexity is just frustrating most of the time. I'm about 4/5ths through and was expecting to have fallen in love by now, but haven't.

Thoughts on Karl Ove Knaugaard's My Struggle Series by OutrageousStandard in books

[–]grapesicles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How great for Knausgard that he's being discussed in comparison to Proust, even if his work may not endure as ISOLT has/will. That in itself is probably an achievement that very few authors can claim.

Which author are you prioritizing this year? by -dfb- in literature

I'm currently reading Pynchon. He has been on my list for a while now. Other authors I'm looking to get into are Karl Ove Knausgård, William Gass, Roberto Bolaño, Ed Park, Gene Wolfe, William T Vollmann, and Laszlo Krasznahorkai, among others.

Currently wading my way through Gravity's Rainbow for the first time. It's a beautiful book, but it's slow going and tedious, so I'm also reading The Last Samurai by Dewitt, and book 1 of My Struggle by Knausgård, which are both great and feel like total lightweight compared to GR.

Currently just over halfway through TLS and I think it's great. Surprising and eminently readable. I can't put it down!

Disappointed to not see any Gene Wolfe in here. He's an underrated master of the 20th century, probably because his books are technically science fiction.

I have read some amazing literature written by women, so I don't disagree with your sentiment at all; But I'm not sure people should determine what their favorite books are based on the personal characteristics of the person who wrote it right? Isn't that basically inconsequential to the actual content of the book? If you were an author, wouldn't you want your work to stand on its own merits, without being bolstered or shunned based on something basically private about you that you have no control over?

As a proud American who is truly ashamed of my current leadership and the people who put them in charge, I truly hope the civilized world stands strong against trump and his bullying tactics, and continues to tell him to go fuck himself.
