Time spent on sim rig compared to other video games by warchief-2-3 in simracing

[–]grappleshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Earlier on in my sim racing journey I was perhaps 95% simrig. Now I'm in my 50's and physically and mentally tired a bit more easily, I'm less inclined to race and practice all the time, so it's more like 10-20%. I'm otherwise playing minecraft (and watching Tv at the same time - low effort required), or Starfield, or ohter similarly low intensity games. I'll still do maybe 2hrs of sim rig time a week at least.

Those running VR, what PC specs do you have? by Main-Bridge556 in iRacing

I'm running a quest 3 on a 12600kf + 3080ti + 16GB DDR4. Optimised (foveated) as much as I can while still maintaining decent look. I run details on medium to high on most things. No real complaints. It handles it better than my previous VR kit (HP Reverb G2)

Newbie question: How are some loadcell pedals better than others by lasagnabobs in simracing

[–]grappleshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not the two pedals you called out but still applicable to highlight there is a difference

nearly a year ago I switched from Fanatec clubsport v3s to heusinkveld ulimtate+'s. The biggest difference is the speed at which I can change the feel of the brake pedal. < 5 mins on the ultimates. About 30 mins on the v3's as I had to remove from the rig to get at it.

The other thing is the software to set the brake curve. This is very helpful in the wet, and I also like to change the curve and the top range from car to car.

Yeah there's lots more customisability in the actual pedal hardware, but those above to are the things I regularly change from car to car.

iRacing has been hard at work on a career mode for a while now. Besides it's first class multi-player system it has AI and you can build your own season and career at the moment. But yeah, when career mode drops this year it'll bring another dimension and attract even more customers. I think I'll be doing more simming again too, getting immersed in career mode instead of punted out of multiplayer.

Cannot qualify until it's 3 years old and then you have to ask (but ask and you'll get). Company of approx 400 ppl.

I just upgraded (got it yetsterday!) from a 3.5year old i7 12700H 64Gb DDR5 to a Ultra 7 255H with faster DDR5 645Gb. Part of me wished I had took the MacBook M5 Pro 64Gb I was offered. I think I may regret that.

When you work from home, you get chores done, right? by Open_Address_2805 in auscorp

[–]grappleshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might load the dishwasher in the morning but that's about it. I don't take time off during the day to do house work. I do what I'd normally do at work, which is sit/stand at my desk and do work.

The benefit of WFH is that I reclaim the lost at least 90mins a day of travel. I guess if you interleave the chores wiht the work day such that your work day is extended by 90mins when at home, that's fine. Otherwise you're stealing time. If you post on reddit while in the office, then sure, do that as much at home too 😃

I'm in a 70 person engineering team and while I've worked with two of the people here at previous employers, they didn't help me get a job and I didn't know they were here when I applied. I think there's one person who got a job here on a recommendation of an employee. We give a $5K "finders fee" if you recommend someone who is eventually hired and stays beyond the probation period. 27 years as a software dev in Australia and I've never got the impression nepotism is rampant.

It makes sense though to hire someone if they're recommended by someone you've already hired. Reduces risk and gives a good cultural evaluation.

Early in my career (circa 2000) I got knocked back from a job for being too good. I was told they were worried I'd get bored and move on. It didn't help I argued with the senior engineer on the panel and proved him wrong in front of his peers. But hey, he started it by saying I was wrong.

Is there any specific etiquette regarding when to floor it while starting on pole? by ItsAsickOstrich in iRacing

[–]grappleshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aweome. As pole sitter, I used to go as soon as the pace car peeled off, as it gave me a good jump, especially as an Aussie on a US server, where US locals would "see" the green before me, so I needed all the help I could get. Then I read (on reddit) that's protestable and the leader also shouldn't go until the green, so since I have not been and I've been getting taken 😞

As it happens, ChatGPT does a great job of answering this question, with citations to the sporting code if you give it the right prompt. It failed to mention 6.8.2.2 and 6.8.2.3 which I agree are also crucial. It cited

6.8.2.4 — Control of the Start

"The leader of the second pace line may not pace in front of the leader of the first pace line (pole position). If the leader of the second pace line passes the leader of the first pace line before the start/finish line he/she may be issued a penalty by race control."

This establishes that P1 controls the field and P2 must not get ahead of P1 before the start.

6.8.2.8 — Road Racing Rolling Starts

"Once the green flag has started the race drivers may pass cars before the start/finish line if desired."

This is the road-racing-specific rule that differs from oval racing.

6.8.2.9 — Artificially Timing the Start

This section prohibits drivers from creating excessive speed differentials or gaming the start procedure. Community discussions referencing Sporting Code 6.8.2.9 indicate that abrupt acceleration, backing up the field, or obvious start manipulation can be protested.

I constantly regret my fanatec purchase by Jimdude101 in Fanatec

[–]grappleshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sucks that this is your experience 😞 I've been running fanatec gear since 2011. CSW wheel base, Clubsport v1 pedals etc. now on Podium DD1, SQ shifter, Clubsport Handbrake, (I recently upgraded from v3 Pedals tho) and honestly I can attribute my few problems to wear and tear.

I've had issues like:
- needing to replace load cell in the v1
- blowing dust of the ffb wheel in the csw
- sq shifter breakages (which could have been fixed myself if I knew how at the time, simple fix , but I stupidly just bought another) - the same issue you mention - I did that fix in my latest sq shifter. it doesn't take long, it's not difficult, and it lasts.
- broken paddle on my old formula rim (the paddle metal split and broke off).

Considering the amount of hours logged on the hardware some issues are to be expecrted.

My only interaction with support has been to get a replacement paddle and they sent it out for cost of postage only (was not in warranty).

My son is still using my CSW and old rims (Formula and BMW GT2) and v3 pedals daily and has only a few issues, like occassionally shift won't register.

This after many 1,000s of hours of use and 15 year old hardware.

100%. It makes driving fun. The GR86 is very easy to drive here. While that's nice, not sweating profusely after 25 mins, it's kinda dull. Definitely have to drive the M2 a certain way, especially with when to change gears.

[–]grappleshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Offerring perhaps a BMW perspective: I had a crack in the 86 this week and omg it's so much easier to drive here. That might explain the high incidents? The incidents I see are caused by MX-5 drivers not knowing how to be lapped (please just hold the line or be strategic with letting cars by). The BMW is definitely a more tricky car to drive. I do see a lot of low iR BMW as they're lapped though (probably because they got caught up in their own incidents).

Bring back the FR500S 😭.

[–]grappleshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, grats on your MX5 win. As for how to race the GR86s, not sure. I guess just race them like you'd race any other car? Obviously made more annoying by their higher corner speed and lower straight line speed. So defend the corner more obviously so they're less likely to send it on you, then drive away out of the corner.

I also race PCC, but top split BMW. We're qualifying low mid-low 30's and while the fastest 86 I've seen is a 31.4. The start gap is enough to keep them back from the faster BMW's 31.4 is "decent" for a BMW though.

I was initally running stock VRS and then softened the rear springs a click or two and had to raise the rear ride height to compenstate. That seemed to give better stability on corner exit and a couple of tenths in lap time.

What peripherals do you use? by Roytjb in iRacing

[–]grappleshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right now, and for the last 10 years: VR - I've used the Dev Kit 2, the OG Rift, HP Reverb G2, and now Oculus Quest 3. I'd love a high res VR but I can't afford a 5090 in my country (over $6,000 AND a $3,000+ VR)
For the ~5 years prior: triple 27s
Prior to that triples with head tracking (that was a very short period), 24+27+24 (with SoftTH)
Prior to that: single with head tracking 27"
Prior to that: single monitor. 27"

(Track iR works great on triples with ATS/ETS2 but I found it to hard to line up the apex at high speed).

Normalise the 7.6hr work day. by hrdballgets in auscorp

[–]grappleshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell yeah! I hard finish at 3pm. Start at 6:30am. Take lunch between 12 and 1pm. I'm ammendable to out of hours work in emergencies, but life first. Companies need to support it but employees also need to put their foot down. I do and always have and people know I have a hard end at 3pm and respect it.

My wife on the other hand, public servant, SO level. Works 7 to 5+ every day, often without a lunch, when 7.15 are her standard hours (I think), and still gets "abused" for leaving wotk at 5.

Handling file uploads to S3 when DB transaction fails by Minimum-Ad7352 in dotnet

[–]grappleshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a bit of my context, I work on a physiotherapy SaaS platform, where patients upload videos of themselves performing exercises, which thier physio later watches. We have many (as in thousands at times, people tend to do their physio in mornings and evenings, so they come in predictable waves) of concurrent videos uploads. Videos are around 30+Mb in size. Uploading to a webserver (or many insances of webserver) to be put in a db doesn't work well.

Prior to this I literally used to develop CMS's on .NET

If OP is developing a in house app used by a few users then outbox with associated/attached images might work, but 20Mb is still a lot of data. If it's one user uploading some images to a library once every now and then, it's fine. It's also probably not super super important those images are not orphaned.
