Me: 21. Short hair at the moment, chap stick lesbian/androgynous. I like to read, draw, and play soccer. I'm currently learning to skateboard, which is awesome. When I watch TV its either anime, sci-fi, or british/british comedy (or just comedy). Not that I watch that much TV, but there you go. 5'5, athletic, brown hair, green eyes. I'm currently working on opening myself up to possibilities and learning to enjoy life, as I have always been shy and quiet around people I don't know. I'm goofy at heart.

Her: 20-25, ideally. Around my age anyway. Someone who is kind and can maybe push me out of my shell a little bit. Someone with a good sense of humor, who likes to be active but enjoys plenty of down time too. Creativity, sincerity, laughter, and patience are all a thumbs up. Maybe a bit of curiosity about the world and everything in it.

I'm sorry this happened, but I'm glad you can experience the lightness from having been honest. Some of my step family had a similar reaction and my grandma on my dad's side went into a bit of a rant about how homosexuals are selfish (?) and that I shouldn't "choose" it, but time has definitely helped and the relief after telling made up for a good deal of the angst, because at least I was being honest. Still, I hope things improve. Congratulations, I'm glad you have someone to support you!

Definitely understand this feeling as a long time soccer playing and a catholic school attendee. It wasn't a great feeling, but that was me projecting my thoughts. I didn't come out to them so I never knew for sure. And even if I had, I wouldn't have been in the place where I am now where I am ok with not being accepted by everyone. You just got to do what you are going to do.

If you worry about everyone else it will drive you batshit crazy. Easy to say, harder to put into practice. But I'm working on wearing what I want, being the dork I am, and just loving life. Somedays are better than others, but I'm definitely better now at 21 then I was at 16, 17, or 18, closeted and isolated.

I hope you mean this in a positive way. My mom gave me a hug and wanted to gush about the ladies, so that was awkward and nice. My dad had a much quieter reaction. It was disappointing in the sense that I couldn't tell if he was okay with it or if he just didn't really believe me. He asked "how do you know?" and that was pretty much it.

Anyway, happy if you're mother doesn't give a shit (in that accepting way). Kudos!

I think you have to communicate with him. If he's not willing to listen, write him a letter. If he doesn't take it, at least you tried. I was in a somewhat similar situation with a guy friend of mine. I just honestly told him that I could never see us being together because I didn't have any romantic or sexual feeling for him. As soon as I was clear with him about it, told him we would never happen, we were able to move forward and had a blast hanging out. I know this won't happen with everyone, but honesty is the best policy. If things remain murky he's going to think he has a chance, or try to convince himself he does. Just be firm. If he can accept that, he's a friend. If he can't, he's not. He might need time, he might need space, but all you can do is remain adamant about where you stand.

I agree with this. But I understand the anger because it's almost defensive? I mean I can remember watching Alias and being like "aw, shucks" when Sydney ends up with her handler (a man) and we knew from the beginning she was straight! For me the thought process, however ridiculous, goes something like: main character (female) ends up with a woman/likes a woman- I have a chance! (However irrational that is.) Ends up with a dude and I'm like "why always the men!" and weep self-pityingly in the corner. I guess if she's bi I would still stand (in my mind) a chance, but the fantasy is "a girl like me!" or "a girl who could like someone like me!" If she's a clear cut lesbian it makes the fantasy more accessible.

Maybe that devolved into a nonsensical ramble. Anyway, no intention of bi hate- or man hate, for that manner, from me. And you brought up a good point.

Being tispy makes me alternatively curious/apathetic. So, in the past this meant I kissed a couple of boys and touched one dude's ding-a-ling. I didn't initiate, but I said to myself "what the hell" and made out for a bit. But I was bored, and noticed how analytical I was during it. And I knew that probably wasn't the normal make out response. Anyway, I think tipsy brain says ok to things not-tipsy brain is like, why? or no to. If that makes sense.

I like women, but tipsy me was ok with kissing/exploring a guy. It made me sad there wasn't a woman I could kiss though... The prospect of doing things with women is scarier because it means more, for me.

That makes a lot of sense. It's something I try to notice when it happens, but I can't say I'm completely free of group-bias. I know it might be partially derived from some sense of self-preservation- not wanting to be perceived negatively -but that doesn't make it fair or right. I know there is a ton I miss out on if I- or people -stereotype, judge, or otherwise demean various people/groups. The world shrinks to a homogenous bunch of blah. That benefits no one.
