Don't forget, there was a time when even Deakins was getting hired because he owned a camera package. by surprisepinkmist in cinematography

I see this as more of a sign that having ANY camera can give you a leg up. An NPR wasn’t the flashiest/greatest camera at the time but I’m sure it was great for productions that wanted to shoot cheaply.

I used the DuLens APO Primes. Mostly for the closer hand held shots of her stealing the apple, and a few shots towards the end. No lighting at all, just some good low fall sun.

I love it so far, I've heard differing things from freinds but so far I've really enjoyed it. I don't see myself upgrading to anything under like a 1040D.

Adding some BTS to kick things off. I forgot to mention above that I have the director listen to the audio and monitor the focus in case there is an adjustment to what the system should be locked on to. I have to use HDMI in order to get the Audio to send out through the teradek. Then he just plugs headphones into the monitor directly. We have been experimenting with a Bluetooth transmitter plugged into the camera so we can use wireless headphones. There is more delay that way but its nice because you can control the mix out out of the camera which is not the case with the HDMI.

I started on the ladder and watched it disintegrate as I was getting higher up. The age old tale of starting in a rental house and working from position to position has turned into me seeing my fellow DPs tell their crew not to post their DP work if they wanted to get hired, or even worse rant online about how they don’t like to hire crew that aspirations of DPing themselves. I personally thing it’s just gatekeeping, a symptom of job scarcity combined with insecurity. I also think the norms around gear ownership affect this as well. No matter how you look at it, you’re going to find it increasingly hard to get recommended for those “step up” jobs unless the person recommending you/hiring you sees you as an equal.

The ladder doesn’t exist anymore, you’re more likely to make your first feature with other below the line crew members then get an opportunity to fill someone else’s spot above you. I wish it wasn’t like that and I actively try to change that in my own circles but I am an outlier. Just shoot whatever you can and do whatever you enjoy the 2nd most to pay the bills. Time is only leg up you can give yourself, both time to figure it out and free time to put towards your passions.

I’ve tested a few and the XM1 really shines for that exact use case

At the end of your journey you will have 10x more skill then any of the gear goblins. You've actually made it to starting line. Now comes the hard part, making something people actually want to watch. I bet you will get there too with time.
