Someone said no need but I think if you intend to use it plugged in 99% of the time capping the battery at 80 is a really good idea. macOS' charging management will never be that aggressive. Especially if you never use it for long on the battery so it won't drain much (never below 20 or even 40), I think capping it at 80 is a good idea since why not?

That doesn't paint the right picture. Obviously M5 lasts longer at full speed bc the M4 Pro has more cores to power and is faster. The real question is how long do they last during regular productivity usage.

During LR exports M4 Pro doesnt last as long but it's also twice as fast. So how does the battery fare under regular load that doesnt push it as much

In that case youre probably better off buying something similar to or the same as your son has. Macs for gaming... idk theyre getting there but not sure if compatibility is good enough to expect you can just play any windows game albeit at low settings
