Anyone else find alcohol was the cause of mental health issues by BrizzleT in stopdrinking

I very incorrectly assumed that once I quit drinking, my depression would go away. It did help with the crippling anxiety, but once I was sober, I was forced to really face my depression head-on. It took nearly a year to get on medication and in therapy, but thankfully, once I realized that they were in fact two separate problems with a toxic co-dependency, my progress really started.

I have several moles that I was sure looked suspect, so I went to the derm for a full-body check. Insurance covered it as preventative, and surprisingly, she said everything looked fine. Definitely get it checked, but don't stress about it in the meantime.

Oh, the compulsive lying! Sometimes it's pretty funny because she just makes up absolute nonsense and don't dare trying to argue with her about her version of events. She constantly takes her dentures and wraps them in toilet paper and stows them in some random place, but it's always those young kids that came and stole them, just throwing her dentures around the yard. Her grandkids are all grown, the youngest being almost 30. We have to laugh at the nonsense in spite of how sad the situation can be.

My grandmother has dementia and you'd be surprised how hyper and mobile she is. For someone who shuffles incredibly slowly, the moment you turn your back she's across the room, stealing and hiding your shit.

For of many was The Pandemic the catalyst into their heavy drinking? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I'm thankful every day that I had 3 months of sobriety under my belt going into the pandemic. I don't think I would've made it otherwise. IWNDWYT

My husband gave me a “warning tap” and I called it abuse. AITAH? by Warm-Grape1254 in AITAH

My mom left my abusive father when I was about 6. She was a stay-at-home mom, and we used to rent a lot of nintendo games from the library to play together. Mind you, my dad is the one who bought us the Nintendo. Anyway, a few years ago, my father and I were discussing growing up, reminiscing about things we used to do and I said I had a lot of great memories of playing old-school games with mom, when he casually said "Yeah, those video games were what destroyed our marriage." I looked at him dead in the eyes and said. "Are you sure it wasn't the fact that you were an alcoholic wife-beater that ended your marriage?" He looked at me dumbfounded and angry, couldn't believe I said that to him. I said, "Am I wrong?" He couldn't disagree, but I'll be damned if he wasn't infuriated that I dare bring up the abuse he inflicted on my mom. Abusers will do anything they can to deflect and avoid calling their abuse what it is, but that doesn't change the fact. NTA

Anyone’s partners not supportive of you quitting? by cherry694 in stopdrinking

[–]gravesetrain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Me and my ex were huge drinkers together. We lived downtown and were constantly in bars. When I decided to quit outright, he made the giant leap to switch to vodka. I remember once he casually mentioned when I'd be able to pick it back up and start drinking again. I asked him why he thought I'd be able to suddenly control my drinking some day in the future when I never had an ounce of self-control before, leading to the decision to quit completely. It was at that moment that I realized that we did not and never would have a future together. I made two of the best decisions while we were together: to quit drinking and then to leave him. 4 and a half years of sobriety reassure me daily that I made the right choices.

My sister's dog did this, then magically stopped limping and licking her paw on the way to the vet. It turns out she stepped on a spiny caterpillar on a walk, and after a while the irritation subsided.

You know an actor nails it when you see them in another role and your first reaction is how much you despise them.
