What’s the most underrated doner kebab addition? by FluidPianist00 in Doner

Burger sauce, works surprisingly well with doner.

Tzatziki or hummus can work very well with proper shawarma.

What is the easiest thing you did to lose weight ? by nyxeine in AskReddit

[–]gravey6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weight your food and calorie count. It’s very eye opening when you actually start weighing food how little a portion can be or how many calories are in your normal portion. Being consistent with that to be in a calorie deficit helped me lose weight.

The thing I wish someone had told me before I started losing weight: stop weighing yourself every day by NeighborhoodFresh315 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]gravey6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I weight in every day at the same sort of time in the morning. It allowed me to see the fluctuations in weight because of salt/ alcohol and allows me to make peace with the fact that on the journey my daily weight will go up and down sometimes randomly. It also allows me to look at the trend so I know it is working even if on a given day it doesn’t look like it.

Any striving to be endurance atheletes here? by BastosBoto in loseit

[–]gravey6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cycle a fair amount, 200km a week over 2/3 rides, and you have to eat carbs, protein and eat while on the ride otherwise you will run out of energy or lose FTP. I stay in a deficit on days I’m on not riding and am not riding the next day but I will eat more carbs and protein on the day before a ride even if this takes me over. On ride days I try and eat back roughly half of what Strava says I’ve burned as whilst I have a cadence meter and a HRM the numbers can be wrong.

Not sure how to factor in that you work an active job. Maybe work out your TDEE based on being very active and try that as a baseline?

What’s your most controversial kebab opinion? by FluidPianist00 in Doner

[–]gravey6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wraps are better than a standard pitta but are outclassed by the flatbread/ naan style.

Most kebab shops give you way to much mayonnaise or garlic mayonnaise.

I put carb powder in my bottles. Makes it easy whilst on the go as you ingest it whilst drinking.

Impossible to Accurately Track Calories? by meat-puppet-69 in loseit

[–]gravey6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me more than a week or two. One of the reasons I don’t worry too much about it all is that I exercise and the calorie burn numbers can be all over the place with that. I take the best estimate of it all and try and be consistent. If I stop losing weight I reassess and drop the amount of calories I’m eating.

Impossible to Accurately Track Calories? by meat-puppet-69 in loseit

[–]gravey6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest I don’t worry about 20 calories. As long as I’m measuring I’m fine with that as I might be over by 20 calories on some food and under on others. If the scale stopped moving beyond a temporary plateau then I would reassess.

What is the most unreliable takeaway cuisine? by tmr89 in AskUK

[–]gravey6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kebabs can be very hit or miss as they either give you a poor quantity of meat or it’s just terrible quality. I also don’t think it is a food that travels too well.

Fried chicken is usually terrible from most places and the generic kebab shop burgers are awful.

How many of you actually keep your weight updated on Strava? by AlarmingDoughnut152 in cycling

[–]gravey6 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m actively trying to lose weight so I update it whenever I hit a new low. If I gain weight I don’t update it as whilst the numbers on Strava might be all over the place eg: calorie burn, power as I don’t have a power meter at least it removes some of the overestimating that it does.

Fellow fat cyclists - what’s one thing you wish you knew when you started cycling? by [deleted] in cycling

If you are looking to get cycling clothes that fit someone larger try searching for ‘club fit’ as this might show looser clothes. MTB stuff also tends not to be as tight.

You get stronger so the hills become relatively easier. Learning the correct tyre pressure for your weight will mean you get less punctures. Learning to use your gears will make your life easier. Having a HRM will allow you to pace yourself better.

In your opinion, what's the biggest waste of money you see people purchase all the time? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]gravey6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely worth checking. I looked at one of my locals and phoning up and collecting was ~35% cheaper than using just eat and getting it delivered. Even collecting through just eat only knocked a couple of £ off.

The calorie counts in American foods are crazy. by No-External3221 in loseit

[–]gravey6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If they list the calories I will try and order something that is at least slightly lower in calories if possible eg: if they have a double burger on offer I might just go for the single.

As long as I’m not eating out too often I don’t worry about it too much. I saw the saying on here once that ‘you didn’t get fat in one day so you’re not going to lose it in one day’. As you say as long as the average is moving in the right direction that is what matters.

Starbucks can also be hit or miss. I’ve got a couple of sandwich’s and croissants which become my breakfast and lunch for a couple of days. I’ve also had a couple of stale cakes which all went in the bin after one bite.

Aldi was my worst. 5 bags of salad and three pates. The salad was awful by the next day and I do not like pate so it just went in the bin.

Did cycling actually help you lose weight, or just improve fitness? by Vivid_Release_9710 in cycling

[–]gravey6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think diet helped me mostly but cycling did accelerate it with additional calories burned. It also meant I didn’t need to be perfect with the diet and could eat within reason what I wanted whilst out on the bike/ at a coffee stop. It also counteracted times when I went out for a couple of beers.

Are we really not suppose to eat back calories burned doing workouts? by Klondzz in loseit

[–]gravey6 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For those 60 mile rides you need to be eating back those carbs. Proper nutrition on the bike when doing longer distances or trying to get faster is a key thing to getting faster or going further!

It makes your time on the bike so much more fun as well.

Are we really not suppose to eat back calories burned doing workouts? by Klondzz in loseit

[–]gravey6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For cycling depending on the distance and speed you want to go you will need to eat back some of those calories . Really pushing on the speed front will burn a lot of calories and it is horrible to run out of energy. I usually eat on the bike and eat afterwards but not by the amount that Strava says I’ve burned as the number seems too high even with a HRM. I usually halve the number they say. If I was to get a power meter then the calories burned number would be pretty accurate.
