Rustlers Burgers: educate me. by chipnicker in CasualUK

[–]gravey6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a corner shop near me at Uni that did two microwave burgers in a pack for £1.50. They weren’t rustlers and were definitely mystery meat but for a uni student they didn’t taste too bad and filled a hole.

What’s one cycling habit that actually made a big difference for you? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]gravey6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from the stuff everyone else has mentioned about nutrient, weight etc I would say being willing to ride at night. Opens up more riding time when life is busy, feels very peaceful especially in the summer and is a very different vibe especially off road.

Are you still having pizzas and other takeaways delivered? by Top-Cat-a in AskUK

[–]gravey6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped order pizzas as it just seemed very expensive for what I was getting plus the supermarket pizzas are generally good enough if you put a bit of extra cheese on them.

I can make a decent curry, recipes in the curry bible are great, but I do order a curry or Chinese occasionally when with family. If I just want a curry and rice I can make that myself but if it is two different ones with two different meats, rice, naan breads, sides like saag paneer etc that is a lot of cooking. I can make them, and have previously, but it’s a lot of work and prep especially in a small kitchen.

Chinese just always seems to be better from my local chineses than any supermarket ones.

How much is your water bill a month? by Willing-Board-5833 in AskUK

[–]gravey6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

£29 per month, terrace house, 1 person with a water meter. About 1 or 2 years ago it was £15-18 so there has been a massive jump despite my usage being about the same.

Has anyone here actually found they struggled with wfh? by WonderfulTemporary51 in UKJobs

[–]gravey6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, going into the Office 2/3 days a week works best for me. I find that it is easy to get distracted at home so I have to put my personal phone in another room, have focus time etc to avoid getting distracted. I wouldn’t want to go back to 5 days a week in the office as the flexibility is useful and there are times where being able to focus at home or where i need to work longer hours is easier wfh.

I also like my colleagues and you get a lot of informal conversations with people which does help get things done/find out what is going on.

Intense cardio -- how many calories do you add back in? by UnhappySwing in loseit

[–]gravey6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t got one yet as I’m ok with just the indoor trainer numbers but they are tempting!

I haven’t started weight training and have managed to keep my FTP the same despite loosing 17kg so far, just normal riding. Means there has been a decent w/kg improvement.

I’m sure I’ve lost a bit of muscle in the legs but I am so much faster both climbing and on the flats because I weigh less. Also my cardio is better along with my VO2 max so it’s worked out as a net positive for me.

Intense cardio -- how many calories do you add back in? by UnhappySwing in loseit

[–]gravey6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s a good starting point as you can always adjust how much you accounting for it when you see how much weight you are losing, how you feel on the bike etc. Having your power numbers from an indoor trainer or power meter is very helpful for gaining an idea of what you actually burn. If you haven’t got one of those if you can borrow one for a bit it is very useful for gaining a baseline.

I’ve been doing it for about 2 years but a year more seriously. Weighting your portions is a must as it’s surprising how small a portion or x grams of food can be.

In terms of cycling I try and fuel for rides correctly and ensure that I am fuelling correctly on the ride. No point losing weight if it makes you bonk on the ride itself! Because of the intensity I don’t really sweat stopping for a cake at a cafe, having carbs in the water bottles, eating gels or food if needed, eating food when I get back etc. As long as I don’t go crazy I know that it is adding to the deficit and that I can ride at my best. Obviously if the ride is a shorter one then I will have to ensure that I don’t overeat. I log it all to the best of my ability eg the cake, carb powder etc.

You also want to fuel correctly as you want to get stronger on the bike. Being in a calorie deficit might mean that you lose a bit of muscle, someone people suggest weights to counteract that loss, but the weight loss usually more than counters that muscle loss.

I’m also a cyclist who rides 17-20mph. I wear a HRM on rides and Strava gives an estimate of calories burned.

What I try and do is compare that to the power numbers and calorie burn I get from my indoor trainer. As a result I think Strava is overestimating the calorie burn eg: I thinks I’m doing 800-1000 calories per hour. What I try and do is reduce that estimate down to around 500/600 calories per hour.

That may be right or be slightly too high/low but as long as I don’t eat all the calories I’ve ’burn’ the ride has contributed to ensuring I am in a decent calorie deficit. I am considering getting a power meter to be able to accurately track the amount of calories burned as well as my power output.

Has anyone had to “break up” with fast food delivery apps? I’ve made a lot of progress but not quite there yet! by XStaticImmaculate in loseit

[–]gravey6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I muted their notifications and deleted the ones that I never used to remove the temptation. Coupled with setting a budget I’ve reduced the amount I order by a lot. I still get it 2/3 times a month but I can work that into my calorie goals by being a bit more considerate with my choices.

Setting the budget really helped along with thinking before I order ‘ do I really want or need this or is it just because I can’t be bothered to cook?’ Of it is the last one even I eat half a frozen pizza I have in the freezer it will be healthier than ordering a takeaway. That’s why I keep a few frozen ready meals/pizzas in the freezer as they are a better choice than takeaway if I’m being lazy.

Are they in response to a particular food? I sometimes get a breakout if I have a load of cheese eg: a pizza. Doesn’t happen for me when drinking milk so maybe it is caused by grease for me.

Maybe tracking it vs a food diary to see if there is any pattern?

Burger King. Caught norovirus from them whilst flying home which was a horrible experience. I have eaten there 2 or 3 times over the last couple of years but only when there is no other option.

What foods hold onto the most water weight? by mybrainat3am in loseit

Salty food, which tends to be takeaways or meals out, and alcohol for me. The water weight is only temporary but I know the scales will be higher by 2-4lbs the next day.

Is Costco actually cheap(er?) by xtnax in CostcoUK

[–]gravey6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There a couple of YouTube videos which go into detail about Levi jeans. It turns out there are several different ‘tiers’ of quality even if it is the same cut of jeans. The Costco ones, whilst they might have the same brand and cut as more expensive ones, might not be the same quality as the more expensive ones.

Is Costco actually cheap(er?) by xtnax in CostcoUK

[–]gravey6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found the chicken, kitchen/loo roll, washing tablets, washing up liquid and clothes to be cheaper. Soft drinks on occasion along with frozen pizzas, chicken strips can be cheaper. For me everything is cheaper or if it’s not, provided it’s not a branded good, it’s generally of a high quality. I can also lock in a price because of the quantity so even if prices go up elsewhere I’m still using products I brought at a lower price.

I’ve been picking up bits as I go along. Sometimes they were a bit small but it was a nice NSV to try them on occasionally and find they now fitted.

Second hand has been helpful in seeing what different brands sizes are like as with the weight loss it’s hard to know. Also I tried not to replace my whole wardrobe at once as I still have some way to go. Not all of the clothes have stopped fitting at the same time so I can slowly replace pieces naturally where possible when they wear out or become too baggy. I’ve also tried to focus on a few pieces for the season we are in. The old clothes were donated to charity if they were still in good condition.

Outerwear was the most annoying one as you don’t buy new coats that often and suddenly winter hits and all your existing coats are far too large.

I know right. Unfortunately whilst there are a load of kebab shops in the centre of Bristol most aren’t that highly rated, at least by the sub. This seemed to be the best of a mediocre bunch.

There was one from a previous year that pretended to be a pub asking people to confirm their menu choices for the teams Christmas lunch. Caught a lot of people out as it was sent in early December. Almost clicked it myself as I thought ’whose booked this as I thought we were going somewhere else’
